I can't put my finger on it beyond loving the history of this city, but it's a fun ride. Two thumbs up.

Oh, and the girl that plays Mylene is FI-AH.

I have it on my list but haven't gotten to it yet. From the preview it is clear they have done a great job of capturing the style and feel of that time and subculture.
I wasn't part of that club scene but I did love that music. I still have my Grandmaster Flash 12" vinyl records in a box in the closet somewhere. You know, just in case I need to DJ a party with a turntable someday.
I just hope the story lives up to the atmosphere. I don't trust Baz Lurhman. Strictly Ballroom was cute and engaging but nothing he has done in the last 24 years really won me over.

I've watched the whole season (6 episodes) and really enjoyed it. The music is awesome, the 70s vibe is really on point, and the characters are great. They do an admirable job of capturing the city during that time. I think the Baz embellishment and color make it fun (especially with some of the music scenes) but can see how the Baz feel can be a love-it-or-hate-it thing. I'm on the love it side and was sad when I realized I had finished the season (really part 1 of the season with part 2 in 2017). The only downside of the show for me was all of the age jokes my wife made.

I feel like the first episode or two were trying a little too hard to be Shakespearean with so much dialogue being verse. Once the show found its groove and the dialogue stopped distracting me, it was awesome.

Thanks for putting this on my radar. I'll try to watch it this week.

Yeah, I just watched the first "episode" last night. It was cool but there was SO much going on and it was so long I had to stop and double check that it is indeed a series and not a movie. Will watch the rest of it over the next couple of weekends.

Yeah, by the end of the 6 epi season, it will make sense that the pilot was more like a standalone, not really consistent with the flow and feel of the rest of the season. The team even admitted somewhere that it was a throwaway. Enjoy the rest!

No kidding, this season really stepped it up for me. It gets much grittier and finds its narrative footing. Love the incorporation of comics to relay both character perspectives and important plot elements.

The article below is probably fair, as I love the show while recognizing the massive flaws and how it could and should be about 2 notches better, thus reaching the canonical heights its subjects deserve. I think the actors mentioned here are definitely part of what makes it work.

I think the show's biggest problem is Jaden Smith IMO. It was evident he wasn't available for much of filming part 2, and his character is annoying and a side plot at best. Would have been better to recast someone that could have been there full time or just eliminate that aspect of the plot entirely.
