Win! (Sports Documentary)-- Who's going to the Tribeca Film Festival screenings?

"We got everything we wanted." -Jason Kreis after the expansion draft.
Kreis is always extremely positive. He'll always say stuff like that. The guy even put a bright spin on his own firing. Kreis is a great guy, far superior to our scumbag ownership.

Also, when the statement is kept in the context of an expansion draft, that he's required to participate in, maybe he did. That's not to say the players he "exactly wants" were in the expansion draft.

If this is a more accurate explanation of the scene, then that obviously tempers my reaction to the prior description.
No, your reaction was an instant classic. Doesn't matter if the scene in the movie doesn't quite fit your narrative/rant, because it's obvious there are quite possibly a lot important decisions being made by vapid minds unfocused on the league.

What struck me was how it was relayed to NYCFC, Ferran Soriano sat down with Claudio Reyna and told him the news that Frank would be staying in Manchester. Reyna apparently was hearing rumors before that, that there was a chance he would stay, so he said "we'd cheer his every goal before, but now we're hoping he does well but not too well"

The guy didn't have an option here and when he was told the news, Soriano tried to make it easier to digest by saying something along the lines of: we're [CFG] here not just for one year, or one season, we're here for many years.

In a way he was trying to justify this CFG move, almost as if to say, yeah you got screwed now but CFG will help you down the road more than it will hurt you in the long run. Claudio was pretty pissed, there's a good few seconds of him just sitting in silence, stewing over the news. He says how he's disappointed and he knows the move is going to kill the good will they'd built up with fans. They then cut to ticket reps fielding calls from people asking about the move, asking about refunds and all that.

Kreis was pissed, he said "they've taken away the most important cog" in his midfield. Every player they'd drafted and traded for, everyone was built around having Lampard there for the opener and they just took the rug out from under him.

Early on in the movie, you listen in on a call betweem Jason Kreis, who's scouting players in South America, and Claudio Reyna. CFG recommended players for them to look at, and Kreis and his staff looked at them but also found some players they wanted to bring in but apparently CFG wouldn't listen to him, it was essentially "here's our player list, choose from this, we're not going to even look at anyone else"

So you can put the blame for guys like Nemec, Calle and Mendoza squarely on the shoulders of City Football Group and their scouts. Kreis wasn't allowed to even suggest players he wanted scouted to them if they weren't on CFG's list.
It's pretty clear at this point that they didn't know or didn't care for Kreis' skillset before hiring him. Kreis was skilled at identifying cheap talent and integrating it over time into the roster, and not so much adjusting tactics creatively to a totally flawed roster. He is a builder more than a guy who coaches up the guys who land in his lap. They're both parts of being a great coach, but many are skilled at one aspect but not at the other. It reminds me of Mitch Hedberg talking about comedy.

When you're in Hollywood and you're a comedian, everybody wants you to do things besides comedy. They say, 'OK, you're a stand-up comedian -- can you act? Can you write? Write us a script?'... It's as though if I were a cook and I worked my ass off to become a good cook, they said, 'All right, you're a cook -- can you farm?'
Obviously, a lack of tactical creativity is what brought him down, and I don't intend to start that tired debate again. I just am much more forgiving to Kreis than some others are due to the clear disadvantages that he had with his lack of control of the roster. CFG de-emphasized the strengths of his skillset and forced him to almost exclusively overcome the flaws of the roster with a weakness -- changing up the system that had brought him success previously. Regardless of whether you were comfortable with the direction of the club or not at that point, that's not a "WIN!"ning formula.

Here's to hoping that Vieira is a better fit -- he's certainly shown that he's willing to change up his tactics in an effort to make things work. I'm not entirely encouraged by the results thus far, but I'm betting that the inadequacy of the roster is becoming much more clear to everyone as time goes on.

I'm looking forward to seeing this, though the story that it is telling feel so dated given what a different spot we are in now, just a year later. A good reminder that its been a pretty fantastic season, even if there are things that drive all of us nuts and the playoff script is yet to be written.

The first time I saw it, it felt dated. The second time it had new developments in it. From my understanding, it will continually be updated until we lift a cup.
