World Cup 2022

people continue to underestimate croatia.. but they have more fight than most and some good players.

not as stacked as brazil.. but they got to the finals last world cup for a reason.

Word of advice for tomorrow.

Don't root for France.

They are a big reason this cup is being played in Qatar. Sarkozy sold their vote to the Qataris in exchange for a big aircraft order.

Yay for shabbat starting right into extra time lol!
Gonna have to live with the suspense until tomoorrow night, I guess!

Martínez is very good at penalties and holland historically bad at them . Got home early from work just in time to watch the second half of extra time and the shoot out . Argentina seemed in complete control from the time I had it on including hitting the post in the 120th .

Here's the story from the Associated Press:

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States, died early Saturday while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

U.S. media seated near him said Wahl was stricken while in the media tribute at Lusail Iconic Stadium during extra time and could not be revived.

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday that he had visited a hospital while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn’t have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.”

Wahl wrote that he had been among 82 journalists honored by FIFA and the international sports press association AIPS for attending eight or more World Cups.

A 1996 graduate of Princeton, Wahl worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball.

FYI we've been discussing this in the Qatar Shitshow thread if you want to check that out.

well deserved by morocco.

portugal were slow and predictable. morocco defended well and were free flowing and lightning quick on attack. a pleasure to watch. love their energy. they might upset whoever wins england v france....which is fine by me!

argentina v morocco final sounds good.

the ref in this england v france game is HORRIFIC. and france is shooting themselves in the foot.

This is absolutely extraordinary and incredible run of Morocco's to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinal this reminds of the host nation South Korea & its incredible stunning surprise semifinal run at 2002 FIFA World Cup
