So while the 2019 champion is yet to be decided the 2020 qualifying begins. These are the "open" division where amateur teams from regional amateur leagues sign up to participate. These rounds last all of 2019 and are drawn by region and are set to happen September 21/22.

FYI in 2020, the open cup will actually start earlier than usual for MLS teams to accommodate the leagues cup expansion happening next year.

The local amateur teams are:
New York Pancyprian Freedoms (NYC- CSL team)
Lansdowne Yonkers FC ( Yonkers)
CSA Westchester (Westchester)

The pairings are to be played September 21/22.

EDIT: I only put NY area since they only posted them as a thread of tweets. ill update when they put out an article with full list of fixtures for whole country.

i soooo forgot about updating this. Qualifying is complete. 12 amateur teams qualified for the first round. Local team New York Pancyprian Freedoms (NYC- CSL team) made it.

summary:

and the rest who made it.

Here are the results of all Qualifying rounds (towards bottom):

Its still not clear if NISA teams will be admitted, i think all the us soccer division 3 approvals happen early next year.

Rumors are that MLS teams will play one round earlier. others wanted MLS teams to play in the lower league stadium in that round. well see

New structure is out. MLS teams join in 2 different rounds depending on their 2019 finish.

1st Round: Amateur and Semi-Pro teams
2nd Round (58 teams): 2nd and 3rd Divisions join (USL & NISA)
3rd Round (40 teams): Bottom 11 MLS teams join
Round of 32: Top 12 MLS teams join

In 2019, the 21 U.S. based MLS teams all joined in the Round of 32 and were matched up against each other or one of the 11 winners from the previous round.

In 2020, 11 MLS teams join one round earlier - presumably all matched up against one of the 29 teams from a lower division. The other 12 MLS teams join in the same Round of 32. At that point - barring upsets - they'll be matched against a pool of 11 MLS teams and 9 lower division teams.

There will be upsets. This is an improved format for the Cup.

In my "soccer fiction" view of the future. The US Open Cup becomes an event which draws eyes and views with the possibility that amateur and minor league teams can play against and beat the Rooney/Zlatan type MLS teams -- this format makes those possibilities more real.

First Round Pairings have been done this includes the open division amateur teams , NPSL and USL 2 teams.

Local team New York Pancyprian Freedoms will play against NJ's FC Motown

I was curious about the NY Prancyprian Freedoms, and I found this priceless paragraph on their Wikipedia page.

U.S. OPEN CUP (Lamar Hunt Trophy) The Pancyprian-Freedoms are also one of the all-time great National Challenge Cup clubs, and have qualified, or have attempted to qualify, for the Open Cup every year of their existence. They won the cup three times in the pre-Major League Soccer era, in 1980, 1982 and 1983, and following their triumph in 1983 they reached the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup in 1984, beating Mexican powerhouse Puebla on penalties, and overcoming Honduran champions Vida, before they and their semi-final opponents CD Guadalajara were disqualified after failing to agree on the dates of the matches.

puebla is not a powerhouse ....lol . but i could of sworn i read they did make it to final because of chivas forfeit.

also just FYI to all. no NY Cosmos this year, as they wont play in NISA league until Fall 2020.

Anyone mildly annoyed that Atlanta United gets the CCL birth for this year? Even when they play like crap they get the prizes

yea that sucks. they had their chance qualifying for this year's CCL. getting to have a do-over next year for the same reasons is wrong. the slot should have been awarded to the 2nd best team in MLS.

Mildly? I'm livid. They were 23/26 in MLS this year. MLS is Back should have replaced U.S. Open Cup and then it should have been MLS Cup winner, Supporters' Shield, and other conference 1st seed just like how it's normally done.

It's not a good showing for MLS and USSF to put a poor team in the competition. Should have been SKC.

I expect MLS would have been happy to make the switch and this is USSF’s choice. They “own” the slot and want to keep it, but with no non-MLS competitions this year had no way to fill it.
Ironically, Atlanta probably will be better next year than this year. So this year CCL has a terrible Atlanta team who earned its way in, and next year CCL will have a solid or better Atlanta team that did not.

I know nobody cares but did we qualify for the 2021 CONCACAF version of Europa league?

Yes, we qualified for the Leagues Cup between MLS and Liga MX teams in 2021 should they hold the event. We were in the top four of each conference that didn't qualify for Champions League (Philadelphia is going to CCL by winning the Supporters' Shield and thus we're in the next top four of Eastern clubs. Should Columbus win MLS Cup then Red Bulls would also qualify).

And I bet the reason for USSF giving the spot to the last USOC winner was to "provide the chance" for it to go to a non-MLS team, and have this be a US-based spot where any American team could have gotten.

I put "provide the chance" in quotes because obviously Atlanta won the previous USOC so it could only go to them in this scenario, but had a USL team won it, they would get it back.
