Agreed with this, but I would rather our second biggest impact DP after Villa would be in the #10 spot. I suppose Maxi could play slightly deeper, but I wouldn't prefer that.

Agreed with your broader point, but how are you not sold on Lodeiro? What more does he have to do?
This is exactly where I am with Maxi. In a vacuum, I would totally be ok with cutting Maxi if a solid plan was in place to bring in 2 new DPs that were set to be solid contributors.
BUT, I think signing Maxi and then cutting him a year after would not be a good message to send to future potential signings.

What I meant is I wasn't sold on Lodeiro being substantially better than Maxi. To put it a different way, I would jump at the choice of swapping Maxi for either one of Almiron or Alessandrini, even if I had to switch around the team's shape and style completely, with all the uncertainties that entails. I don't know if I would be as eager to do that in the case of Lodeiro.
Left side right side. Fuchs makes more sense after we sell mata after the world cup, but sweat also makes a lb replacement not a high priority.
Was he on a 2 year deal? What about restructuring by adding a year? Make it 2 yrs at 2.4 or something.

Lodeiro led the Sounders to the MLS Cup last year. He was their best player. The Sounders have hamstrung themsleves because they HAVE to play Dempsey too. Lodeiro and Dempsey don't fit together. Lodeiro is the better player and he's not as useful when he shares the pitch with Dempsey
I think we are looking at this in the wrong strategic sense; because we as sports fans tend to look at names and not structures.
As of this moment NYCFC is one of the very best teams in the league, and will have one open DP slot coming into next year. The team has achieved this level of play under a DP2 system that was handicapped by paying for a DP3 system.
Additionally NYCFC has managed to pull this off while virtually never starting its preferred XI. So whats a team to do?
I prefer the strategic choice of turning your starters into backups where you can, since ya know everyone in the league is getting a shitton more GAM/TAM thank you ma'am next year.
TMAC stays with the team, dude has an MBA, seems intelligent and is a local boy. All that adds up to CFG wanting to keep him in NY for future front office or coaching responsibilities. If you look at their Manchester operations, they really do prefer to hire local when two candidates are equal. CFG will probably keep him on the team for longer than they should because of this. Especially here, as part of a new team, they want to demonstrate that cradle to the grave one club one life option.
Back to the rest of the team. With how much more money is coming in next year I'm not sure that Brilliant is overpaid, unless you can find a clear upgrade for the same price, his abilities seem to have grown rather significantly under PV's teachings.
We need another high end striking option.
We probably loose both Harrison and Herrera in the offseason.
$5 on getting another CFG shaped present in the form of someone who's waaaay too good for the cap space.

The TMac raise is still so perplexing. He made $85K in 2016 and they bumped him up $100,000 in one shot to $185,000. Even removing the debate regarding wether his on field play warranted the bump, what was the motivation? Who were we competing against? He's not eligible for MLS free agency, even with his Irish passport it's hard to imagine teams from Europe trying to scoop him up. If he was unhappy and they felt the need to give him a bump why not throw him a 20k-30k raise?

Villa is the only guy in MLS I would take before Giovinco, and even that may not be entirely rational. There could even be a debate as to whether Giovinco is the best direct free-kick taker in the world right now, since that is the only aspect where the level of play doesn't affect greatly the difficulty compared to Serie A or La Liga. The GK may be inferior compared to the top leagues, but the wall is equally big and the goal equally small. Is there anybody scoring from free-kicks at Giovinco's clip? Besides Messi?

What we need is another goal scorer, whether that means moving to a 3 man back line and getting second striker or replacing Wallace (Or Harrison if he really does move.) That should be where our energy is put first and foremost, not trying to replace a player who's done basically what's been expected of him.

I would say Maxi is easily outside of our Top 5 most important players. It's possible he's behind Chanot and Herrera as well.
He's been league average this year at his position. You could replace him with the 10th best CAM in the league and we're equal or better. That's not a knock on him, it's just that the league is very deep at his position.

I happen to believe both things. And we were pretty lucky to have someone so willing to work to basically play as an 8 since we've so rarely had two proper center mids.
