I don’t think it does. Just sounds like Kamara feels he’s underpaid. And they: 1. Don’t want to pay him more. 2. Don’t have any cap space left. 3. Don’t have any _AM left. 4. Any combo of 1,2,&3.

I think he’s the perfect fit here, as long as he’s comfortable not being penciled into the starting 11 each match. And based on all our estimates we have the cap space and TAM remaining to pay him what he wants.

Why wouldn’t we pencil him in every match?

I’d write him in with a Sharpie!

The question is, how much more can he get paid in China?

NYCFC DEPTH CHART

Forward/Wing: Mitriţă, Tajouri-Shradi, Lewis, Castellanos
Forward/CAM: Moralez, Medina
CM: Ring, Parks, Ofori, Sands, Torres, Bedoya, Rocha, Haak
RB: Tinnerholm, Scally
LB: Matarrita, Sweat
CB: Chanot, Callens, Ibeagha
GK: Johnson, Stuver, Caldwell, Barraza

If I understand this correctly, Kamara gets sold and then Gio must be restructuring his contract down to $1.99 million a year or less.

That’s the only way these things are related, no?

Also - what the fuck are RedBulls, all the expansion sides and Portland doing here? Maybe he wanted out of MLS and he’s going to make $5 million a year, but how does any team with a DP spot open not go and buy this guy?

Observations.

CB: We are entering the season with only 3 center backs. Not to sound like a broken record, but this seems like a big mistake. Two years ago, we had a playoff game with 3 center backs not available. In each of the last 2 years, we had multiple games with 2 center backs not available. While I am sure this means that Sweat and/or Sands would be shifted there in an emergency, this still seems critically low to me.

FB: We have 4 fullbacks, 2 on each side. While that should be enough in the abstract, it's worth noting that one of our left backs is chronically hurt (including now as the season starts) and the other is apparently penciled in to provide depth at center back. On the right, we have a very good starter backed up by a 16-year-old from the academy. We expect great things from Scally, but it's worth noting that he is one injury or suspension away from having to produce in a big way.

Defense: Overall, there is no need for a major signing here, but we could use a couple of experienced pieces for depth.

CM: We are deep and talented and should be very happy. Eight players, including an MLS all-star, a major off-season pickup, kids from the academy and others.

CAM and Forwards: No striker, but lots of talent. Fairly deep, with 6 guys who can interchange at the 4 positions. Could use a body or two at the bottom of the roster in the event of too many suspensions or injury.

Gio has to get down to $1.53mm. AND they need the TAM to buy down at least $1mm more. But there were a number of posts and articles how that can't happen without some shady business going down to skirt the rules.

Gotham Gator Gotham Gator i think you need to include Rocha in your depth at FB. He will provide cover on both sides to start the season.

I would not be shocked to see Scally supplant him as your second choice RB and earn minutes this year if necessary.

Hot take incoming - Joe Scally will he called into a Senior MNT Camp before Sands. I think he may end up being the starting RB at the World Cup 2026.

GAM and TAM can’t be combined. That’s an issue.

Gio gets down to $1.53 million. They save about $450k in TAM on the Ola sale. They save another $1 million on the Ibra contract. I don’t know how much of that they’ve already used.

But $450k of the $1 million in TAM comes from selling Ola.

We are badly going to need a striker still. I really hope they get one.

But remember, if they sell Ola to China, the max cap relief they can get via GAM/TAM is $750,000, no matter what the fee is (re: Jack Harrison sale). Unless, of course, MLS changes the rules here.

LA Galaxy could get a lot more cap relief in the form of GAM/TAM by "selling" him within MLS.

Ola was making $950k I believe. They were spending at least $450k if TAM to reduce that salary from a salary cap perspective.
