Blame Dyer or Reyna?
Also, in this article Reyna does seem more slanted away from the big name signing than we have seen in other interviews. It's a matter of emphasis rather than a specific fact, but that was my take-away. Of course, even there, it's hard to tell if that's how Dyer wrote it or was Reyna actually tilted in that direction.

Be disappointed in both, but one's job is to push fluff and the other's is to cut through bullshit and write something specific, substantive, and insightful. Blame the one who didn't do his job.

That's a fair POV, but I prefer to blame the criminal not the cop who didn't stop the crime.
Yes I realize that's a ridiculously imperfect and even unfair analogy .

The really telling quote, for those who aren't paying, where "it" = a big name signing:
“Of course some people just think this is New York and we need some star and pizzaz. If the right player comes up that will help us on the field, then we’ll explore it,” Reyna told The Athletic. “Whether we need it, I honestly don’t know. I don’t know. We’ve had those conversations internally. We felt we did when we started, that was something we all believed in terms of the launch of this club in New York City with a market with so many teams going on. We strongly believed in that direction. Now we don’t feel that it is necessary, however it doesn’t mean we’ll never explore it again.”

I agree that this is more directional than anything said before. Basically doesn't rule out a big name but it would be for on field qualities before all else, and it would have to be business-friendly.

Blame both the fence that sells (and) the thief’s stolen merchandise.

Couple of thoughts.

That is the most forthcoming he’s been in public about the direction of their DP signings and I’m happy he’s comfortable saying publicly what he’s said privately for a couple of years.

I just don’t agree with it.

One saving grace? Isn’t the Man City model similar? Who was the last star they went out and bought? They don’t do what Madrid and United do. They get guys that are just about to hit their peak and hang onto them. Outside of a guy like Mahrez, they haven’t really been in the game of buying the obvious, lazy big name signings.

You answered you're own question. Mahrez was one of the biggest signings during the transfer window at 61 million pounds.

Otherwise...

In 2017/18, Laporte 58m, Mendy 51m, Walker 47m, Silva 45m, Ederson 36m, Danilo 27m, Diskerud 0m.

In 2016/17, Stones 50m, Sane 45m, Jesus 29m

In 2015/16, De Bruyne 68m, Sterling 57m, Otamendi 40m

Sure, they're not buying guys in their direct prime. But prime now in football is probably 23-26 in terms of buying.

I think he's wildly under estimating the impact of not having a big name DP is going to have on ticket sales and season ticket renewals. The good thing is we are about to find out this year.

Again, my point isn’t that they won’t spend a dumb amount of money. They spend a lot and they spend it well.

The point is how many of those guys were already at their peak? They didn’t go buy Alexis Sanchez. Or Higuain. Or Pogba. Or Cristiano.

How many of those guys were household names when they bought them? Sterling because of the year Gerard slipped and cost them the title? Cc Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan

The OLD iteration of this Man Citt went out and bought Ballotelli and Tevez.

I guess what I’m saying is that they do what Atlanta did and grabbed the best young players available.

All he has to do is turn on MSG to see a team with no star power and the crowds that gather.... hell, he just has to open his RB yearbook to reminisce about the good ‘old days of playing in front of nobody at Giants stadium.

Lol. You’re really barking up the wrong tree.

I guess if I based my value on whether or not Liverpool won like the toffees do, it would maybe hurt more.

Having an underdog team have an amazing run and come up short is far from crippling, dude.

ETA:
Is that what this club is doing? Turning everyone into toffee-headed idiots? Must be, right. No hope to best local reds, ever. No plan in place. Nothing but twitter warriors every offseason struggling to make an argument things will be different and they never are.

Fuck. We all root for MLS Everton. And our version is owned by a vile bunch of humans who deliver us all the downside of corporate football and none of the upside.

We’re all wasting our time. We should shut down the forums except the Other Football section. Best thing about even supporting this club is that forum anyway. Nothing anywhere else worth talking about.

QFC is in other football ;)

You sure as shit haven’t.

ETA: that’s harsh. I’m sorry. It’s got to be hard to root for an “Everton” in two different places. It’s bad enough rooting for MLS Everton alone.

Listen, I feel you. Neither of us has won the top flight since the 1980s. We’re all in the same boat.

More on MacKay-Steven here (not sure which pub stole the quotes from the other, but this one calls us "MLS giants"!):

And more than one Scandinavian club interested in Berget:

Would be interesting to see if we can sell Berget for a pop and then re-invest that into a younger, more agile striker.
How much did we acquire Berget for?
