2024 General MLS Transfer Thread

I think MLS is an athletic league - faster & stronger players & also more physical. This is to compensate for lower technical skill and decision making.

An experienced veteran might shine with better skills, but could also find that his athleticism has fallen to the point that he can’t keep up.

I also think this is a generalization that’s a lot less true than a few years ago.

and LA continues to be where the big names go...

Marco Reus to Galaxy.

If NYCFC or Red Bull showed interest in players like Reus, Giroud, etc. some of them would choose NYC. I don't get the impression that either team is even attempting to be in the mix for players like Reus.

Yea I'm sure that is definitely the case. But it wouldn't hurt if the team brought in some of these guys. They aren't even taking up dp spots in LA. The benefits of having them around for guiding the youth would be worth it..

Interesting details about the Cincinnati DP replacement:

It's a short term loan to fill in the remainder of the season. It can be extended but left open. I read elsewhere that they terminated the existing DP Boupendza's contract for unspecified failure to meet contractual obligations. It also seems that the decision to terminate might have been made by MLS, not the team.

All in all a nice job by the Cincy FO acting nimbly, filling a sudden roster hole and maintaining options for future roster decisions.

It's interesting that there is no option to buy, the rumor has been that MLS loans require an option to buy. I wonder if that changed or if it was never true in the first place.

I think we discovered that rule no longer applies2-3 years ago. Maybe even came up in a loan involving NYCFC, but I can't recall any specifics.

2-3 years! Wow, I'm way behind. It makes me wonder how many other misunderstandings I have about MLS roster rules. It feels like its impossible to keep up.

My certainty level on this is only medium-high.
Also if I’m right about it maybe Ledezma was an example of a loan with no option.

Chicago and even San Jose making moves. Atlanta wants to bring back almiron. charlotte too i think making moves. at this rate and no signings nycfc will be lacking. and pushed down to fighting for play in spots. there is too much dependency on prospects

We have a DP spot (Magno), a U-22 spot if we move Jovan, and need a replacement for Sands. Plus hopefully there's space for a fullback or two.

Due to our lack of roster turnover, there aren't a lot of moves we can make this winter. We are still over a month to Opening Day, I'm sure they're working on it. The transfer window isn't even officially open yet.
