Santi to botafogo rumors picking up on social media now

OK well that would be a nightmare for us this close to the start of the season. But at least we'd have a DP spot open to replace him with. Would be an opportunity to plan for life after Maxi with a new DP No. 10.

Serious would be a multi-month injury. I would think Glenn's comments indicate Thiago is expected to return either by Opening Day or shortly thereafter.

so what you're telling me is martins would be back with basically no preseason and not be anywhere close to match fit or ready to play. that bodes real well for our defense. :)

If there's anyone I trust to be ready to go when he's called upon, it's Thiago. The guy is a professional. Maybe he misses a couple games while getting back up to speed, but he's not a guy I worry about in terms of conditioning.

If I was confident the FO would replace him with a senior DP I wouldn’t mind him leaving. He’s a great player, but perhaps Jansen could identify someone he wants to build the team around. Or you take the Botafogo money and give it Portland for Evander.

Imagine how fun and exciting it would be if the club were actually committed to replacing Sands, Santi and Jovan (loan issues aside) with some high flying performers. Before Santi came up, it looked as if they wouldn’t do much/anything - but if they lose Santi as well it would be really unfair to the manager, team and fanbase if they don’t make some/any meaningful moves.

I understand the pessimism, but if we're getting $15 million for Santi, we're replacing him. Will we sign an 18 year old? Maybe -- that's been their MO for sure, but I'm confident CFG will invest. Hopefully they've been learning from their recent mistakes and will find someone who can actually help us.

If Santi goes and pending a replacement, we’ll have 3 attacking mids/forwards between the ages of 20 and 36, and one is a low utility bench player: Bakrar, Martinez and Wolf.
Even now we have a gap from 25 to 36.
ETA what I’m saying is we don’t need another kid.

If Santi is not here to start the year, that means we have Maxi and Wolfie to play the 10, and probably Pereira too. Not a long term solution, but an acceptable one while we look to a replacement.

And I want that replacement to be more of what Maxi was in 2017, not what we've seen lately. A seasoned guy who can step right in and lead.

We got $15.5M for Taty, Lee waited two years to replace him and then gave us Bakrar and Jovan. I think the pessimism is well earned at this point.

Edit: also Lee's justification for taking so long to replace Taty was because they wanted to make sure they got the right player. 🤣

Glenn said Santi was carrying a knock. was it really a healthy scratch?

if santi goes this suddenly, the soonest we'll have a replacement is probably the summer. i have zero faith in Lee to have been prepared for this.

Lee: "Oh talles, you're back. so listen, santi is gone so we need you to play the 10. "

I also think that if we're getting $15 million for Santi and opening up a DP spot, we're going to use that on a 23-year-old instead of an 18-year-old. I think David Lee is painfully aware that we need a succession plan for Maxi, and this would be a chance to put that into motion.

David Lee's attacking position replacement track record since we won the cup:

LW: LW Magno/Andrade -> Andrade/Martinez -> Ojeda
ST: Taty/Heber -> ST Magno/Segal -> Bakrar/Jovan/Martinez
RW: Medina -> Pereira/Pellegrini-> Wolf/Fernandez
CAM: Maxi/Santi -> DP Santi -> DP Santi/Older Maxi

Where has Lee made the attack better? No wonder we can barely score nearly every time he makes a move it's a downgrade. The biggest upside addition is Martinez who Lee signed as depth at LW until Cushing, due to a sheer lack of options, figured out he could score goals at ST. Santi and Sands leaving plus a new coach will be used to excuse another poor season and instead of moving on from Lee because of his terrible player selection track record, he will get a pass and a 3rd chance to retool the roster with his terrible player selection track record.

We don’t need Santi if Maxi was 5-7 years younger and could play Ojeda and JF on the wings. But that’s not what’s good enough for us.

David Lee has done okay with Superdraft picks, MLS acquisitions, and players we have gotten without paying a fee (Wolf, Martinez, etc.), but he has an abysmal record for any players he actually pays a fee for. Full details are below but Lee has spent a total of $47.8M in transfer fees (Claudio spent $13.5M).
  • $5.5M - Profit from Sales (Gabby and Acevedo)
  • -$2.6M - Loss from player sold for less than acquisition or lost for near nothing (Amundsen and Andrade)
  • $16.2M - Players currently on loan providing no value to the club (Magno and Jovan)
  • $3M - Started a 2024 playoff game (Freese, Risa, Illenic, Perea, Santi)
  • $14.4M - 2024 Playoff benchwarmers still on the roster (Tanasijevic, Ojeda, Fernandez)
$47.8M was spent and $3M of that money resulted in players that started a playoff game in 2024.

Lees' entire paid transfer fee record for reference

2023/24
  • Mijatovic - $8.7M (gone, no $ return yet)
  • Ojeda - $7M
  • Perea - $600K
  • Tanasijevic - $400K
2022/23
  • Illenic - $1M
  • Freese - $400K
  • Fernandez - $5M
  • Bakrar - $2M
  • Risa - $1M
  • Santi- ? (fee not reported)
2021/22
  • Pereira - $5M (sold for $10M)
  • Thiago Martins - $3.8M
2020/21
  • Talles Magno - $7.5M (gone, no $ return yet)
  • Thiago Andrade - $1.60M (lost for a small amount of GAM in the super draft)
  • Malte Amundsen - $1.4M (transferred out for $400K GAM, $1M Loss)
  • Alfredo Morales - $100K
  • Acevado - $2.3M ( Sold for $2.85M)

Yeap. Pound for pound, he’s done a really bad

so we need a time machine for a younger maxi and older, experienced ojeda and JF
