2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

On Santi, if someone waves $17 million at you to sign him, that’s good short term business. I don’t think he’s worth that, and would be upset if we had paid that much for him.

But it only makes good long term business if you then turn that money around and sign someone to replace him and maybe another guy or two. I have no confidence that will happen.

Wondering when Bogart would weigh in.

He doesn't like NYCFC fans.
He thinks the only thing we understand is a good shlap in the face or a slug from a .45.

jack would be great, but we need a creative replacement and someone to rotate with maxi. i don't have confidence wolf can fill that role.

He would be perfect if he's willing to come back. He's not starting consistently right now for Everton so maybe he would be open to it. At 28 he still has several good years left. Bring Jack back and let him lead us into the new stadium!

Totally agree.

I think everyone took my credit where credit is due comment to suggest I somehow thought that also meant other positive things would happen. I don’t. It’s like the above conversation about Andrade. Credit him for speed. He’s got that. Mad amounts. And he translated it into one absolutely glorious full field sprint and score at the death. One of the most memorable goals in our 10 year history. But I don’t for one minute consider him to be a broadly skilled player because of that. I don’t want him on my team. I just think he has speed.

Likewise, Lee seems to be selling Santi above what we consider his market value. Fair play to him. Credit due. Now (as everyone else said) it’s up to him to prove he has any other skill in the toolbox. And I agree (as everyone else said) I have little optimism that we will get anything of value, at least not before July.

Don't wanna be captain downer but has Lee said that the club would make big DP splashes to open the new stadium or is that us assuming that because it would be the logical thing to do?

He hasn’t. His two usual scripts are “we want to compete for every trophy and signing young players and improving them is how we do that” and “of course if a huge name becomes available and wants to come we will consider it”

23 .. few seasons in argentina on 2 teams. not exactly lighting it up. it'll be nice to sign a more experienced player, but this seems like it'd be a stop gap move than a splash. transfermarket says he's worth about $5 mill. lee will pay $15 and say he got a bargain lol

Nah, Lee will pay $5M, he has to save the other $12M for some more expensive kids to sit on the bench with Fernandez and Ojeda.

Welp, fingers crossed then.
One of the primary reasons we exist is to market Etihad and promote world domination of the brand. The stadium was the dream for that, and you would think at least initially the best way to dress that up even further is with a couple of flashy signings. The incredible stadium alone may be enough but I think they will want to go even further. They also have to sell ridiculously priced luxury seats which will be easier to sell with some flash (although not sure how the timing will work on that given they need to start selling sooner.). Just my hunch. Then they will go back to signing 19 year olds with no track record.
