2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

think that's a pretty easy choice. wolf, martinez, jones.
Fernandez has not only been ineffective, but is also a poor fit stylistically for what Pascal is trying to do. Bakrar does a lot of good things on the field but his finishing is... I mean let's just say he'd probably lose a pistol duel to a stormtrooper. So I agree I'd cut bait with those two.

Martinez obviously you keep. Jones unfortunately is still a question mark--keep for sure if he gets back into the form he was in before his injury, or even close to it, but we just don't know, and we won't for a while. Regarding Wolf vs. Ojeda, not sure I've seen enough consistency and quality to justify keeping him over Ojeda's youth and potential. But hopefully we'll know more in a few months.

Jones is a bet for sure, but I think I'd have to give him that chance to regain his form after such an unfortunate injury. The way he seems to be, I would bet on him for sure.

I would pick wolf over ojeda simply because I know what i'm getting with Wolf right now. He might not be a game changer and he drives me crazy with how he can kill an attack, but he does contribute with hard work and pressing. Reminds me of Medina in a lot of ways.

I think Ojeda definitely has a higher ceiling and potential but he's been given opportunities to show that he's improved and he just has failed to do so. By the third game, Jones had gone from a nervous rookie draft pick into a winger that was a consistent threat in behind and aggressively getting into the box. Ojeda just isn't showing enough in training to be a starter and he's not showing enough in games to make the spot his own.

Primary Transfer Window: Closed.

Aiden O'Neill. Not yet announced. Taking it slow to announce or did the paperwork not get done in time.

Doyle gives David Lee a grade of D. Don't know how this isn't an F.

There is another way this makes sense, and that's if they are gettin KdB in this summer. If that happens, then I understand a little more why they held serve this window.

I don't see how waiting on KDB's arrival justifies holding off on filling other key roster gaps. Yes, we may have addressed the CDM need, but we still lack competent wingers. KDB will draw defenders and create space, which helps, but he’s not going to magically elevate Ojeda or Fernández to MLS-level wingers.

He's primarily a creator, not a prolific scorer. He needs multiple quality options around him, not just Martínez, to truly impact the attack. We’ve seen this before with Pirlo: a world-class passer wasting chances because the wingers couldn’t finish or make the right runs.

It seems like Lee is still holding out hope that his guys will come good, but if you're bringing in a player like KDB, you should be using a solid chunk of our GAM/TAM to bring in a quality winger to maximize his strengths.

It absolutely seems like Lee still believes in the guys he brought in already. Feels like if they don't by the end of the year, we'll have a new sporting director next year. Which may also be part of what's going on.

My guess is that they're just slow to announce it. They're probably waiting for him to do an intro interview.

I would bet a delayed announcement is intentional. They waited til the last second to sign this guy, he still needs a visa. Might need some time off since he just played almost a full season in Europe. Then he has to train and integrate into the team. We are looking at multiple games before this guy plays. For casual fans that don't follow things closely, a delayed announcement compresses the gap between when we got a new player to when he actually plays.

So...June?

They've done this before, eg Santi. There's no pattern I can see (sometimes they announce long before arrival, sometimes not) but presumably there's a BTS reason.

His text is a little subtle, but IMO scathing. WRT the grade, I think it's a D solely because of the Santi sale price, about which Doyle notes it did nothing to help the team. But the rest of it basically says Lee's one big move was to hire Jansen to develop the U22 talent and it has not worked outside of domestics, which is nice but not the big issue. Doyle is coming to think that sticking with Ojeda and Fernandez was a mistake.

Yes, but only because we've dressed 2 keepers to fill out the 20.
Yeah, I figured if he had made one is was on a multi-keeper day. Even if you buy the 'they are holding off on signing stars because they are getting KdB' (I don't), the lack of depth signings in inexcusable. We're struggling to make a full 18 regardless of how you feel about the starting 11.

(all "yous" are generic)

I agree that sticking with Ojeda and Fernandez is not great, but given that they were forced to move on from Jovan, I can't see any team having the audacity to bail on the remaining two this quickly. Given our pile of GAM, the more ambitious teams in the league would have brought in a quality starting-caliber winger by now as a hedge. NYCFC seems convinced Ojeda and Ferandez are still capable of being quality MLS-level wingers, and their plan to make that happen is to force playing time for them by making sure there are no better options on the roster.

The best reading of our situation right now is that whoever controls the money decided David Lee has spent enough of it to be successful, and either these players hit or he hits the road.

If he really is running his own show and accountable to the guys upstairs for everything we're doing, I can't imagine he's not on the hot seat. Like, lava hot.
