2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

I think you could argue that even the TAM portion of the roster is a bit of a mixed bag. Parks and Martinez are arguably our two best players. O'Neill is an unknown. Bakrar is a bust. I held out hope for him longer than others, but I think I'm done thinking he can break out after last night. Wolf is okay, but he's our second-highest-paid player, and he's taking a ton of TAM. For the amount of resources we are using on Wolf, he should be at a minimum a top 5 player on the roster. Is Wolf a top 5 player on our team? Is he a top 5 player on any MLS team?

TAM players are nowhere near our worst roster problem, but given the roster rules, I would argue that you need to do better than 2 out of 4 with another on loan and an incoming TBD.

I'm a little higher on Wolf because I kind of think he's a Medina-type guy that is more valuable than we realize due to his workrate. I think our TAM (and more importantly, our non-TAM portion of the roster) is comparable to anyone else's. The fact our only available DP is a centerback and we only have one available U-22 is what is holding back this team from being title contenders. If we had a complete roster, we'd be battling atop the East and daydreaming about our second star.

Wolf is fine. The problem is he has more goals than anyone in the last 2 years except Martinez and the guy who left.

A winger that could score at a decent rate likely elevates Wolf as well since he seems like more of a creator than a finisher.
If we actually used our available slots - DP 10, DP LW - we'd be immediately competitive. So long as we consider the loaned DPs/U22s to be spoken for slots, we will never be on the elite level.

I don't think anybody is overhyping him. I just think we recognize his potential. In the handful of games he played before his injury, he improved a bit every game. He was a consistent threat in behind and wasn't afraid to take people on 1v1 and made every effort to get into the box for goal opportunities.

Contrast that to Ojeda and Fernandez. We've seen much more of them so far this year and while they've had some flashes of improvement here and there, they still disappoint overall and the potential just doesn't smack you in the face.

Will Jones regain his form and become the player we all want to see him become? Who knows. But that potential we saw prior to his injury is difficult to deny and gives hope, considering what we've got to work with now and no signs of Lee bringing in anybody new.
Exactly right, although Lee gets one more window to right the ship. If he blows it ... 🤷‍♂️

And that would really suck because the next person in the chair would have to unwind all this stuff. That's at least two more windows and the extremely crappy possibility of staggering into our stadium as mid-table cannon fodder rather than contenders.

Anyway, the thing about Malachi is his pace (full disclosure: I'm a pace addict). There's obviously a lot of room for development in his game, but one thing he can do which no one else seems to manage consistently is beat defenders to the by-line for the cutback pass. That threat alone is worth the price of admission; at the very least, he pulls defenders around and opens up space in the box.

I was hoping Trapito would be the guy to supply that threat while Malachi was out, but he only does it occasionally. He's just as likely to pass back when confronted than try and beat his man and take off to the end line. Or cut inside into traffic and lose possession. It's pretty frustrating to watch, because I think he can do it. He just doesn't do it.

(If I didn't know better, I'd say Ojeda thinks like a No. 10 rather than an attacking winger. But that's another matter.)

To be fair, though, some of these issues might have something to do with Maxi's lack of speed. We can't cycle the ball through space and be sure he'll get there first. In fact, more likely than not, he won't. So, passes must be direct to be secure.

It's okay, mostly, when Keaton is out there, but when Parks comes out (for whatever reason) the attack grinds to a halt. The hinge is gone. Defenses get to fall back, set up, move in unison and either block shots or force lousy ones because none of our attackers get an open look. It's all point to point — very, very predictable.

To be doubly fair, if Maxi had, say, Jack Harrison to work with on the wing, that could be a different story. And if we had a dynamic, ruthless DP No. 10 and Maxi could come off the bench against tired legs rather than carry 90 minutes every match, that would be a different story, too.

I look at this and I just see a team with players poorly picked, underperforming, and just missing the mark.

Yeah, this is a tough unwind.

End of 2025 there are really only 2 players to release from the senior roster - Martins, Tana.

Still, that means in theory there are 3 DPs we could sign in the next 9 months. If only the team showed any indication they would do so.

Ojeda seems like he has the pace but I'm not sure and he doesn't seem confident enough in his pace to at least try to get in behind on a consistent basis. i also thought he was going to be more of a dynamic dribbler but every time he does beat a defender, he's trying to do it with his pace more than trickery. so which is it? is he pacey or is he not? Regardless, he doesn't seem to have the confidence to play with freedom and plays the safe option more often than not.

Personally, I'd rather he get called offsides a few times cause he's trying to get in behind or lose the ball sometimes cause he's fearlessly taking on defenders to create opportunities, than the fairly tame going through the motions he tends to do now. i was really hoping he'd break out this year, but he's showing very little signs of developing into an elite winger.

That's the big problem. We are laughably leaving Jovan's spot open in case he returns, but he's made it pretty clear he doesn't want to. We're leaving Talles's spot open in case he returns, but it seems pretty clear Corinthians likes him and will buy him. The odds either of those guys actually return are remote, but we're keeping their spot open for, what? Public relations reasons?

The most charitable reason for not replacing those players is that CFG isn't willing to give David Lee more money considering his DP/U-22 track record. But if that's the case, why's he still the GM? The entire operation has gotten stagnant and lazy. Meanwhile we are all getting multiple emails a day asking about premium tickets in the new stadium as if they only see their fans as bank accounts.

Corinthians probably would buy talles, but probably not for the price tag the club/cfg wants for him. Jovan should just be left in Europe. just keep him on loan till they can sell him like they did with mitrita.
