2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

Three NYCFCII players signed to short term agreements for tonight's game. I assume the "short-term agreements" last probably a week? So I presume they will also be available to appear this weekend.

They can sign each player to 4 short term deals per year and they can appear in a maximum of two league matches, but unlimited non-league matches. This is Molinari's 4th deal. Reid appeared in a league match in March so he can only make 1 more appearance in the league, but if he plays tonight it doesn't count.

Weird that we signed a GK, Did we just need extra keepers to fill out our bench?

Just learned that short term agreements are for Four days. So assuming the contracts were all signed today, all four players will be under agreement for Saturday as well. I wondered why they waited for today to announce these deals seeing as they've already traveled, but now it makes sense.

SoupInNYC asked about this but it seems the 3 GKs is a Pascal thing not a roster issue like in years past. Pascal also carried 3 in many cases at his previous stops as well.

I wonder if there is an origin story of Pascal getting burned by only having 1 GK on the bench and vowing to not let it happen again or if its just a tactical choice?

Does this mean Matty might be getting a rest and not even traveling?

Yeah definitely no matt tonight just interesting it's not rando

This is very good from Hudson River Blue and the crux of our frustration with the organization right now and the cognitive dissonance we see between their words and their actions.

For the fans that have followed the team from Yankee Stadium to Etihad Park, Red Weddings to Parties in Portland, and from Jeb Brovsky to Aiden O’Neill, that’s simply not fair. It's this very group that the club has relied upon for survival during its 14-year wait for a proper home venue — the least you can give them is your honest word.

I look at this and I just see a team with players poorly picked, underperforming, and just missing the mark.

When I look at this, I see a really good squad — except for the three U22 signings. One is a clear bust, and the other two are a year-plus in and have done little to show they're worth it.

It's really tough to see how David Lee unwinds this even with a terrific summer window. Maybe a miracle DP No. 10 will do the trick, maybe Malachi coming back will unlock the attack, but a lot has to go right.

I'm so glad Lee was such a genius and signed Fernandez and Ojeda to such long contracts when we had no idea what they could really do since they didn't have much experience prior to coming. WHAT A GENIUS! Bakrar too. At least he'll be gone before new stadium opens.

Hopefully Martins is gone this year or agrees to a non-DP contract. Haak needs a new contract soon.

I think Malachi Jones has replaced Kwadwo Poku as the most over hyped player in our club's history. A few of you talk about him like he walks on water.

I don't think anybody is overhyping him. I just think we recognize his potential. In the handful of games he played before his injury, he improved a bit every game. He was a consistent threat in behind and wasn't afraid to take people on 1v1 and made every effort to get into the box for goal opportunities.

Contrast that to Ojeda and Fernandez. We've seen much more of them so far this year and while they've had some flashes of improvement here and there, they still disappoint overall and the potential just doesn't smack you in the face.

Will Jones regain his form and become the player we all want to see him become? Who knows. But that potential we saw prior to his injury is difficult to deny and gives hope, considering what we've got to work with now and no signs of Lee bringing in anybody new.

The TAM/rest of the roster is fine. The problem is that we have 1 DP and 2 U-22 players available. If we add 2 quality DPs and 1 quality U22 player added to this roster, we would have the potential to be a title contender. Freese, Haak, Ilenic, Moralez, Perea, Risa, Gray, Jones, Shore all being regular roster players is quite good from a cap perspective. The problem is at the top of the roster. Plus that $3.5M of GAM burning a hole in our performance.

Exactly. Horrible misuse of the 6 most valuable roster spots and a wad of fake money sitting idly by.

There is an element of the backup quarterback syndrome with fans and Malachi. He is far from proven and could very well disappoint. Still, moogoo is right. He's actually shown more promise and advancement in his limited minutes than any of the other young, raw offensive players , and we have so few causes for hope on offense.

Yep, totally agree. Jettison Talles and Jovan and get 2 DPs and a U22. If even two of those three new ones pan out, plus either Malachi returns to form or one of Fernandez/Ojeda starts "getting it" and producing, the team can compete for the cup.

I think you could argue that even the TAM portion of the roster is a bit of a mixed bag. Parks and Martinez are arguably our two best players. O'Neill is an unknown. Bakrar is a bust. I held out hope for him longer than others, but I think I'm done thinking he can break out after last night. Wolf is okay, but he's our second-highest-paid player, and he's taking a ton of TAM. For the amount of resources we are using on Wolf, he should be at a minimum a top 5 player on the roster. Is Wolf a top 5 player on our team? Is he a top 5 player on any MLS team?

TAM players are nowhere near our worst roster problem, but given the roster rules, I would argue that you need to do better than 2 out of 4 with another on loan and an incoming TBD.
