2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

Post this for the masses. This is gold.

I'm not much for engaging with the internet at large—I’d much rather have conversations with all of you fine folks here on the forums than dive into Reddit or the broader online chaos. That said, the photo edit I posted was a quick and lazy one. If anyone wants to take it and share it elsewhere, feel free.

What I would love is for a reporter to ask Sims or Lee something like this:

"At the end of the disappointing 2023 season, you told fans you were committed to putting this club in a position to compete for trophies at every opportunity, and you emphasized that your commitment had never been stronger. Given the current state of the roster heading into the U.S. Open Cup, Leagues Cup, and MLS season, do you feel you've delivered on that promise to the fans?"

the answer you'd get would be "yes. as I mentioned in a prior interview and as david lee has reiterated, the current roster can compete with anybody in the league. we finished in the quarter finals of the playoffs last year and were unfortunately eliminated. but it shows our commitment to fielding a strong roster that can succeed. "

not missing the playoffs yet again kind of went against us in terms of holding Lee accountable.

A shame that Pascal has gotten in on the act now too. Talking about how we have to sign the right players and they’ll take as long they need to.

Wouldn’t mind it. Some depth at CDM would be nice, and bonus points for a ‘roos player. Def not a priority like a 10 but a Sands-ish type would help.

He played for Melbourne City, so he has CFG connections. Not sure if that means this is more likely to happen or if it's the reason he's being linked to us by sources and there is no credibility to it.

I saw something that said we are offering a $2M fee, and his current club is asking for $3M. If those numbers are accurate, that pushes him uncomfortably close to DP territory.

Would be disgusting to waste a DP spot on such a player.

Yeah, I get it, but it’d be nice to see a reporter actually make them squirm a bit and call out the obvious BS. Maybe even follow up with something like: “Over the last two transfer windows, Atlanta, Austin, and Cincinnati have each spent over $30M on proven players, while NYCFC has spent $0, despite losing both Sands and Santi and still sitting on an open DP slot. Do you feel like the team is falling behind the more abitous clubs in MLS?”

I know this is just the nature of MLS coverage in the broader sports media landscape, and I really do appreciate the people who cover the team. But it’s still frustrating that no one ever seems to be in a position to press them on this stuff.

Jovan was the most expensive transfer in club history, a total flop, and they quietly shipped him off to Belgium with nothing but a generic quote from Lee about "finding the best path for player development." Could you imagine the absolute firestorm from the media if the Knicks, or either NY football team, had a signing of that magnitude fail that spectacularly?

I like where you are going, but I think even your question turns into a softball with this ending.

- No, I don't. We are committed to winning and blah, blah, blah.

Vs (and I know this kind of opining is not great journalism, but ...) "NYCFC has fallen way behind the more ambitious clubs. What was the decision making inside the organization that made it okay to fall behind in this way? And what changes can fans expect in the future in terms of quality and speed of signings?"
