You play your best team. If he can practice fully, you play him.
You play your best team when those players are healthy. Practicing fully doesn't necessarily mean the injury is fully healed or can't flare up easily again. A lot of prevention comes from fitness, and fully practicing doesn't necessarily equate to being able to go 100% in a game situation. He's missed three weeks(?) - not sure if it's exactly the same with soccer, but with running, every missed week of fitness needs two weeks of training to get back - so he may need 6weeks to hit the same level he was at in the Cup match. Maybe he's been training already for a week (so he only missed two weeks), he'd still need another 3 which is essentially the end of the international break.

It's not even a pet peeve. It actually confuses me.
Hey, welcome to American English, ya know?

I've always been somewhat fascinated by AstroTurf® brand synthetic sports grass. It came out when I was a kid and seemed like a space age miracle product, and for a while it only existed in stadiums. Didn't get a chance to walk on any until I was an adult, but now it's all over the place.

I'm not unsympathetic about the 'turf/turf thing but does anyone actually use turf anymore when referring to actual grass? Or maybe that's just me being from New York City and not actually having a lawn. Or knowing anyone who does. I mean, if I were to go to a "lawn store" I'd ask for sod. I'd know what turf was but I wouldn't walk into a store and ask for some turf. Might be a regional thing though.

Also, I love that astroturfing has come to mean the (fake) opposite of grassroots support. It just makes me happy that that term has become a thing.

"some in Major League Baseball are concerned about how well the Yankee Stadium turf will hold up under so much wear and tear."

In other words, yes.
The careful use of language is more than half of my job. Words like "turf" suck.

One last turf point and I'll move on. If turf were to start meaning fake grass exclusively, and stopped meaning real grass, I'd be completely OK with that. When it comes to language I'm generally a descriptivist not a proscriptivist. Language changes, words alter their meanings, and I'm fine with that. But a word that means one thing and it's direct opposite -- in the exact same context -- is nuts.

Fantasy MLS claims that Ben Sweat has the second-highest "expected points next round" of all defenders in the league, with an estimated 9. This seems... odd? A second-stringer defender playing away, and all. Then again I guess he's been contributing to scoring lately.

I'd still consider resting him longer - at most a 10-15min cameo at the end of the match. Just log training minutes for fitness until the international break is over.
This. I would love to play Maxi a full 90, but this is a guy that was labeled as often injured when we signed him. 90 minutes after traveling to the west coast and playing on astroturf is a recipe for a re-injury. Whitecaps are down a bunch of players. Last week they played Brek Shea at ST. Ok playing with our best team minus Maxi.

For better or worse he's hasn't been second string since the end of April.

Rule of thumb is one day of acclimation for each hour of time difference.
Damn!!! That's crazy! My west coast trips are "straight to work" the next day!!! One day and you're ok. Now on my european trips..... that might take a couple of days of sleep walking to get acclimated.....

Does your job involve running 10 miles in 90 minutes? Just curious. :)
