Blues Again Pursuing Spanish Gk, Iker Casillas

I heard a really interesting interview on the Planet Futbol podcast last week with a leading soccer stats/analytics guy. He made the point that goalkeeping is one of the most important positions on the pitch and one of the hardest to evaluate. He said a top goalie can be worth 10 extra points over the course of a club season, but it's very hard to use stats to figure out who those guys are.

That's a long winded way of saying if he's an upgrade over Saunders, and I think that's true - even if he struggled at Real - then he can be a valuable addition for us.

both will be 35 this (MLS) season. who would you rather have, a career MLSer or Spain's national team keeper?

I thought Saunders was fine last year. He obviously has things he is good at and areas where he struggles. And, like most any MLS keeper, he gave up a few howlers. On the whole, I did not think he was amazing, but nor did I think he was the real problem with the team last year, and ultimately I am fine going into this season with him as our goalie.

However, I think one would have to assume that Iker's skills have deteriorated pretty dramatically to think that he wouldn't be an improvement over a middle of the road MLS keeper. Now, of course every decision in MLS has to be made through the lens of the salary cap implications, but if we were able to get him on a low salary, I think you have to make that move.

For the life of me I cannot understand this. Just why? Seems as if club management is not concerned about talent/skill but would rather attract a more publicly known figure to the team, probably with one thing in mind, sales. Makes no sense.

It makes complete sense. Their first priority is profit. People LOVE to come to these games to watch all of the world star players that they once were only able to see on TV. Not to mention the millions of jerseys they've sold of the 3 DPs (plus Mix). Plus now one of the best midfielders in Premier League history is the coach! What they are doing is very smart, from a business perspective. Their first priority is profit and popularity, then their position in the standings.

To echo what others have said, if there's a magical world where you can get Iker Casillas into MLS for non-DP salary and a Garber-granted extra international slot, you fucking do it.

Oh, he's "fallen off" a bit from his glory days of captaining the Galacticos? His experience *alone* makes him a greater asset than practically any starting MLS keeper out there. And confidence in one's keeper is possibly the greatest boost to the defense you can have in soccer.

So what if we'd only have him for a season or two? Casillas in.

(note: I don't actually think this is likely, but all the people wringing their hands that Iker might just Not Be Good Enough For MLS made my jaw drop at the sheer audacity of their opinion of the league)

Saunders, collectively is a pretty good keeper. Great shot stopper, poor distributor, but also had poor distributors in front of him on the back line. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. No one complained about his distribution when we had Nemec to bring balls down for the mids. At least Kreis had the sense to change tactically when Josh's shortcomings really came to light, and tried to play out of the back more often.

I'll say this: Saunders' shot-stopping ability saved more goals than his distribution allowed against him or kept us from scoring, a net positive. Always good to have extra keepers, but we need to loan EJ and sign Rawls if this were to happen.

Regarding GAA as a measure of GKs, horrible stat. GAA is a team stat.

Save % is much better (though also flawed). Among MLS GKs with at least 1000 minutes last season, 14 had higher save % than Saunders, 8 had lower.

Even though I'm not a fan of GAA to judge a GK, I can't seem to find shots against stats for Casillas's time in Porto. But he appears to have allowed 14 goals in 20 games. 0.7 is a damn good team GAA. If some part of that is Iker, count me in.

Why couldn't CFG sign Casillas as a backup at MCFC this summer and loan him to NYCFC when we have international space and salary cap available on our roster in 2017? As long as nobody is trying to pull a fast one on MLS with the $$, this should work. Nobody at MCFC should bitch about having Casillas available as a backup next Fall. I am a Saunders fan but Casillas is a definite upgrade at GK and our defense was the weakest part of the team last season.

Unless Wingert's $225K salary stashed in the MLS salary bank with any leftover TAM we have and we believe MLS is going to give everybody an additional international spot is enough to bring Casillas over for part of a season. Thats too many unknowns and ifs for my taste, but setting up the acquisition for 2017 seems doable and would be a great move.

I've been wondering this about Zlatan.

If we don't have the DP slot for him this summer why not have MCFC sign him? Then sell to us after Frank leaves at season end. Dare to Zlatan via MC.

caballero/wright are already rostered by City.

Would be a nice gesture. And make for a hell of a reality show to have Zlatan in Manchester.

Until we don't sign the players who will have a reasonable impact on the team we won't suceed. Signing Casillias because he is better at passing the ball than Sounders and has leadirship is nonsense. The players like Ibrahimovic, Neymar (after he leaves Barcelona) should come, not the players for the overfilled positions (GK isn't overfilled but 2 is almost enough and we should be happy with our current №1 and №2 goalkeepers on the team so we'd only need №3).

Ok, you don't know anything about soccer if you don't realize how important those skills are in a keeper.
Brilliant idea. Those players are just sitting there waiting for us to sign them!
What? Are you smoking? C'mon man we should not be happy with a poor keeper.
