Had to ask myself if it is April, honestly.
This is a big surprise.
I personally would be thrilled if they went and got Claudio out of semi-retirement, but I think it's more likely we get an up-and-comer out of CFG.

He must have known the hatchet was coming. SKC is one of the cheap franchises in MLS, so he'll use his talents there, somehow. Fucking Khiry Shelton has been on the squad FOREVER.
Putting aside smaller club and budget, does the dual title of "President of Soccer Operations & General Manager" mean this is nominally a promotion? Are those both Sporting Side positions? NYCFC is not organized similarly.

Honestly, I'm happy to get another face in, I think we need to see what someone else can do and if our criticism of Lee was justified all this time or not.

Things are going well for us rn, however, devil we know may be better than the one we don’t. Think Soccer Operations is more his vibe anyway. Is Sims in charge of hiring the next guy?
I'm not sure we ever will know. Any Sporting Director we hire will have access to the same CFG scouting, and be subject to the same amount of CFG interference, which we don't even know exactly what form that takes or how much it happens.
Putting that aside, fans disagree over how much credit he gets for 2021 and the extent to which the pain of 2023-24 could have been mitigated. Even now, as we head to probably our second best ever season point total I'm not sure if I think it's a bit of a fluke and he's lucky given how many signings were busts, or has the plan finally come together. I was kind of waiting to see how this winter was handled and how 2026 goes to decide, at least for me, but now that's harder to do.
Well Lees worst signings were generally when he spent big money. Won't have to worry about that at SKC.
Imo if the next sporting director has the same problems as Lee, that tells me all I need to know about how much was cfg network etc. vs how much was Lee.
If all of a sudden the type of player or origin of player changes much we will also gain info out of that.
So while we won't know specifically I think we will still have some idea

This is it for me. I was pretty clearly Lee Out after last winter window but we're about to find out whether that was right or wrong.
Of course the new SD will "need time" to evaluate the roster so wouldn't surprise me if we had another quiet window this off-season.
We've now had our only two Sporting Directors leave for another MLS club. That would fit with a theory that a Sporting Director here has less autonomy and ability to shape the roster than he would at other clubs.
It wouldn't surprise me either, especially considering the shape our roster is in right now. The next sporting director has a lot to work with.
For all the grief he's taken (and there's no denying he's had some swings and misses), David Lee is leaving us in really good shape. We look for all the world like we're poised to make a run at the Cup.
Wild timing on this, though. I can't wait to hear the inside story.
The most interesting part to me will be if we get another CFG insider like Lee or someone with some level of outside perspective that will occasionally push back on CFG in the way that I suspect Claudio occasionally did.
