Expansion Rumors Megathread

MLS will be the Number 5 league in the us and could get a NHL style in the next round, given how NHL's ratings aren't that high and NYCFCFan10 we don't need MLS to past the other leagues we need just need MLS to get the ratings up so we can get the big TV money but MLS isn't replacing any of the other leagues.
At least not for the foreseeable future it's not. :/

Z4CH3B99 not at any point and that isn't what we should be looking for with MLS, it's not about replacing one of the big 4 it's about making it the big 5.
Why am I quoted in this? I merely said that for the foreseeable (near-ish) future MLS won't get the TV money, exposure, or players needed to cement its position as a top 4/5 league.

Cause you were the last person to speak off it and I disagree a bit with your timeline

If MLS can continue this upward trend in popularity I'll be tempted to agree with you.

Unless we are counting college sports, aren't we already pretty much #5? I don't know how to value NASCAR, but just from anecdotal evidence I feel we are above them.

The value of the TV deals is a pretty good indicator, NASCAR's current deal is worth $8.2 billion over ten years, the MLS deal is worth $720 million over 8 years. NASCAR is earning more in one year than MLS will in 8 years from broadcasting rights. WWE's TV deal is worth $160m per year.

The current deal also includes USMNT matches, without them they wouldn't have got $720m. There's still a long way to go yet for MLS.

Who the hell watches NASCAR? It's the most boring thing I've ever seen.

I have a lot of sympathy for soccer fans in the USA. They are competing against the 4 richest sports leagues, college football and basketball which are bigger than most leagues around the world, and a myriad of other sporting and soccer options plus a media that isn't so receptive to the sport.

That makes it extremely hard to compete. But it's improved a lot over the 20 years I've followed MLS.

What MLS really needs to join the big 4 would be a salary cap around the $50 million mark but that's easier said than done

Charlotte had 60,000+ for its ICC game between chelsea and psg.

I think MLS needs to get active bringing a team in this city. I think it will do well.
