Galaxy Postmatch

Yeah, this was a problem after Medina came off for Ofori—nobody seemed totally sure how the four-man midfield was supposed to work. Maxi was vaguely covering the right wing in addition to his usual position but wasn't playing high enough to make those far post runs.
Exactly. There was one instance where the ball flashed across the 18 and Maxi was covering the right side but stopped around the top of the 18. A forward/winger would most likely have made that run. He runs to the back post and it’s a tap in.

Not blaming him for that as that’s not his role.
There was a point in the shoutbox last night when 4-5 of us all noticed this and roughly simultaneously all typed slight variants on the exact same comment about making repeated crosses to nobody.

What were people's thoughts on Ofori last night? I didn't really pay a whole ton of attention to him, so I may go back and watch the condensed match to get a feel for it.
Didn't show much. The interesting part was that he played on a line with Herrera as a CM rather than at DM. Had a couple interceptions and a tackle, 7/8 passing, but also an embarrassing giveaway leading to a foul in a dangerous area. Otherwise he was just kind of there.
I was just really happy he got a run out and some quality playing time. It's going to be a few games before he is in form, and we are going to need him to be good for us once injuries, international duty and card suspensions start hitting the starting lineup.

ETA: Yes, I know he's not U17, but the same concept applies. It just means we're already late.

I hate to say it but none of these clubs are there to develop talent for its own sake. They are there to sell tickets and make money. I don’t think the Kraft family, CFG or most other owners give a damn about developing talents for its own sake or the benefit of the US team.

One more thought - I'm in the Maxi doesn't have the final product often enough camp for sure, but I want to credit him where he is due. If he were 4-5 inches taller, he'd be Iniesta.
100% agree on everything, only qualm is that he misses too many of those 1v1s and clear cut chances which I hope he starts to convert more frequently soon.
If he didn't get like two 1v1 opportunities per game, and a botched rebound here and there, I wouldn't bring this up... other than this, he's an extraordinary player.

The only other time that we did this that comes to mind right now was in the inaugural season against Orlando. Kaka free kick off the post, Mix and Poku lead the break to put us up 5-3.
Wasn’t there also the Sanders catch/outlet to a streaking Jack who took it into the box for a backheel to Villa for the score? Don’t remember if that was off a free kick or corner, but it was a thoroughbred race in transition.

i would love him to score more, but i dont hate that he doesnt. I'm glad we have someone thats capable of even getting the chances. He'll bag some along the way.

EDIT:

Wouldnt mind seeing some more of this though

My thoughts on the Medina vs Jack argument is that yes, 2018 Medina seems a better player than 2017 Jack. I am trying to play out 2018 Jack and I think it's fair to assume he would have continued to improve in Year 3.

I definitely think Medina is great and has a bright future for us but he is also a young player that will have some inconstancies. Jack last year had 8 goals through 18 games before only scoring 2 the second half of the season. It's just part of their growth. Same story as Herrera. Thought he was pretty terrible against SKC but thought he was pretty awesome yesterday. Hard to judge young players on one or two games.

It was against Philly at home. The game rings a bell because I think the other goal was scored by Pirlo on a free kick. It’s the only reason that game is stuck in my head.

Still sounds like Iniesta to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but in my recollection, Iniesta has never been close to an elite finisher, despite having some elite finishes from time to time. He's just not going to pump in goals and assists.

One other thing from the second half last night, I remember at least 3-4 successful crosses where there was no one who made the run to the back post to dunk it in. If only there was another forward they could put on who would make that tactical run...

Blowing the Nordic horn and calling the Viking...
Those crosses came right after we took Medina out -- go figure -- a RW would have been there to slam that in, if we'd been fielding one.

Lots of talk about the positives, but I wanted to point out that I was a bit disappointed that Tajouri and Mata didn't make runs at goal, and especially Tajouri into space on the right after LAG was down to 10 men. Mata's breakaway looked like he had the angle to get in on goal and he went outward. He could have put the game away.

Tajouri seemed to be in no man's land on the right, but felt fine just hanging around midfield. When we'd get possession nearing the middle third, if he takes off, there's no one there and we can either dump it in the corner or have him go in on goal, but he didn't even make the run when he should have three or four times. It was maddening, but that may have also been a PV ploy.

Medina seriously looked like he was going to cry when he came out. He almost left PV hanging. And then he put his head down on the bench and was consoled by some of the other players. PV’s pattern of comments suggest that he’s having a difficult adjustment and the team is going to do a lot to bring him along.

And PV really seems to like the kid. PV went absolutely nuts celebrating after the second goal and then looked at the other coaches laughing, seemingly with a “did you just see that?” look.

I like how they talked up medina but not how they kinda shit on Villa. Especially since villa has a goal and an assist in 2 games. I dont think he stole any thunder, i just think he added to it and gave us something else to be hype about.

Villa had some shaky moments and made some odd decisions yesterday. Prior to the goal, he had passed off in situations when he probably should have been more selfish. I joked to the guy next to me that I was glad he didn't try to pass that tap in.

I think he is still not completely in sync to start the season, but even still, he is one of the best in the league.

probably trying to compensate for being too selfish in game 1

I was also happy to see Medina get the FK on his left foot. Missed by a few feet, but it's nice to have he and Villa there to unnerve defenses.
Yeah, that was a poorly taken kick. But I hope they still throw that in there a decent amount as I'm sure he will do better and its great to keep defenses more honest. Even if all it means is the slightest of hesitation by the keeper before Villa cracks one.
