Game Of Thrones (spoilers)

Whole thing is good, but this para gets to the heart of it:

"The “Great War,” the war of the living against the dead, the existential fight for the survival of life itself, was fought in one location, in one night, over the span of a few hours. The Night King waltzed into a trap the leaders of the army of the living whipped up in 30 seconds of planning conducted a couple hours before the battle began—Put Bran in the courtyard and surround him by 10 or so professional sailors wielding bows and arrows—and Arya Stark leapfrogged a hundred thousand wights and a half-dozen distracted White Walkers and stabbed the Night King in the belly with a little Valyrian-steel dagger, and he died, and all the White Walkers instantly died, and all the wights instantly returned to inanimate death, and that was it. The Great War—which turned out, for all the scuffling, to have been a far more minor matter than Stannis Baratheon invading the North with like 2,000 dudes—was over, the threat of the White Walkers banished forever, because somebody had the idea to wait for the Night King to come for the Three-Eyed Raven and then an assassin-school dropout jumped very far and poked him once with a knife that couldn’t even cut through Catelyn Stark’s fingers."

It's like in the last star wars movie. If the baddie is so big and so bad, there is no way you are ever going to be able to defeat them and do it justice.

Kind of amusing that Sansa made such a big, bitchy deal about how much inventory, provisions, and supplies Winterfell had when Daenerys arrived, and how they hadn’t foreseen needing to look after two additional armies and two dragons. Granted, maybe a lot of time really took place between that afternoon and the Battle, but Casa de Stark now has about 1/8th (or less, the Dothraki had to have numbered a quarter to a third of the total) of the original total mouths to feed.

I don't think this is right. Didn't she have a custom weapon made to her design? They didn't clearly show either her design or what she used to take care of the Night King but I don't think she just used her very small sword. And besides, didn't she give that to her sister before the battle anyway? I think there's a lot more to this than folks are thinking.

I watched again. She gave Sansa dragon glass. Arya uses the valarian steel dagger that came from little finger and bran gave to Arya (which now adds a whole extra layer to that exchange. What did he say? “You take it, I can’t use it anyway”. He knew he couldn’t kill the NK with it, but she would!). But also if you read the books it goes into depth about describing the dagger. I can’t remember exactly what the book said, but it was old from the time of the first men, or something like that. So there’s a history to that particular dagger that kills the NK and I’m curious if the books ever tell us the full history.

That’s interesting. And it makes me wonder what the deal is with that custom weapon. Perhaps it’s for Cersei.

Was the custom weapon the one she used earlier in the battle? It looked like some double edged spear that was able to be split into two blades (if desired). When she's kicking ass in the beginning of the battle and everyone is staring at her all WTF because she easily defeated 10 wights in 10 seconds when they're struggling to get one. I honestly can't say and will try to rewatch it, but during that battle she starts out with a spear that she then splits in two for a dual mini sword type weapon. I think that was the custom weapon forged by Gendry Baeratheon for her in use.

That's all totally possible, but with the amount of attention they gave the scenes where she asked for it you'd think they would have made a bigger deal out of her actually using it.

I was pretty sure that was it, then she lost it when even she was flung about because there were just so many wights.

Those scenes were foreplay. It wasn't about that weapon.

Interesting thread about how a proper ancient castle defense would have been set up.

These inaccuracies don't really bother me hardly at all. I don't mind as much when medieval fantasy gets reality wrong as I do when the characters forget everything they know about what makes their world special.
The main point is that they should have had their forces behind the trench, which makes all the sense in the world.

Definitely bothers me less in a fantasy setting with dragons, ice zombies etc. than in something like say Knightfall or Vikings on history that are trying to be pseudo historical. Probably a long siege would have made sense than what they did but who wants/wanted at least half season of siege warfare with the undead? Especially when there's such finite episodes left.

I know at this point its splitting hairs, but the Night King definitely would never do a long siege. Long sieges are for when you want to reduce the number of deaths to your side and are worried about if you have enough troops to invade the castle. The Night King was completely right in his game plan, he just didn't realize Arya could fly over a crowd of white walkers like 10 deep inaudibly.

same end result, different way to get there, that would have made me more satisfied:

"I wanted to see Bran warg Rhaegal. Have Rhaegal land on the ice dragon and tear it up. allowing Jon to get into the godswood. Jon engages the White Walker Generals which gives Arya the needed distraction to ambush the NK. Jon seeing Arya get choked yells out to her, causing the NK to take his eyes off her allowing her to give him the razzle dazzle knife drop stabbity stab."

I have been waiting YEARS for Bran to warg into a dragon. I thought that was going to be the whole point of his arc since they’ve been telegraphing it forever.

I still think it will happen. Dany or Jon die. Bran wargs into their dragon and torches Kings Landing.
