General MLS Discussion

Lately, I’ve been wondering—what if Lee, not CFG, is making the final decisions on all signings? If he’s the one who chose Magno, Jovan, Fernandez, Bakrar, and Ojeda from CFG’s scouting lists, then this season is make-or-break for him.
Quite frankly that's why I'm firmly convinced that Lee doesn't have a say in big money signings and it's a matter of here's who you're getting, so FU make it work.

Nobody can swing and miss like that and keep his job.

We already have enough challenges stacked against us that missing the playoffs is a real possibility. We have a history of slow starts under new coaches, and our player acquisitions tend to be both late and sluggish. 2023 showed that Lee is comfortable leaving glaring roster gaps after key departures while searching for replacements at his own pace.

If he’s the one who chose Magno, Jovan, Fernandez, Bakrar, and Ojeda from CFG’s scouting lists, then this season is make-or-break for him. His repeated insistence that “this roster is good” suggests he’s betting on Fernandez, Bakrar, and Ojeda to succeed. That also explains his reluctance to sign players who might "block" up-and-coming players. Having already blamed Cushing last season, he’s out of excuses. I wouldn’t be surprised if he drags his feet on new signings, hoping one of these guys breaks out and salvages his poor track record.

After firing Cushing last year, if NYCFC does not see improvement this year I do think it will cost Lee his job. Which is why I think, even with the late start, he will make moves to try to improve the team. I think it's his neck on the line if he doesn't.

If there's any justice in the world, Lee is toast if we don't finish in the top four in the East.

Top-4 is tough because the East really is loaded, but I would say we need to be top-6. I also think it depends on what we see this year. If the play is improved and the team has bad luck, I can see him staying. I don't like the idea of tying it directly to table placement because there are so many variables in that. I think it depends on how they play and what kind of improvement we see in the squad.

That’s like 80-90% toast odds imo
You may be right!

Fair enough, but I must be honest: anywhere outside the top four isn't good enough for me, and I don't think it would be good enough for CFG. It would mean we went sideways relative to the competition with just one year to go before moving into our own (and very expensive) park, after a challenging (and relatively expensive) two-year-plus transition.

It's time for results.

I agree with you, but Top-4 in the East is going to be very difficult to achieve. Let's see how the year goes before I decide whether I want that to be the benchmark lol. If it's as ugly as last year was at times, I'm not sure anything aside from a conference final appearance saves Lee. Whereas if we play well but get some bad luck, don't get results, and show improvement that doesn't appear in the standings, he probably stays.

I dig it. A lot can go wrong just due to bad luck. I'm just out of patience. To me, another sixth-place finish would be a failed season and would mean we're too far behind schedule to get where we need to be in 2027: coming into our new park as either the Cup holders or the runners-up.

And if it turns out we're falling further behind the competition because someone above Lee is pulling the strings, then I want their ass, too. :p LOL

How have you gone from the club's biggest cheerleader to its biggest hardass in like one day haha.

What matters is not whether they end the season 4th, 6th, or 9th, it's HOW they end the season. This is MLS. If we are firing on all cylinders heading into the playoffs, with a chance to get to the cup final, that's brilliant. If we are muddling through, then meh (this is my prediction). If we are overperforming/hanging on by fingernails, and get knocked out in the first round, that's a failed season and Lee should be gone.

Don't have to give me the hard sell! 👍

The first Doyle Tier List for 2025. Tier 1 is Miami, Seattle, Cincinnati and LAFC.

NYCFC is in the middle of the middle (Tier 3) and the ninth team listed from the East. He's very high on Ojeda, repeats his YPOY prediction, and claims people close to the team say he's been immense in preseason. Was he? There was a post or tweet listing the goals scored in preseason but I can't find it.

Doyle also says NYCFC had "$15 million worth of talent, stretching from the backline to the front, that previous head coach Nick Cushing couldn’t (or wouldn’t) develop last year." That's CW at this point, except for the bold. Isn't all of the undeveloped talent in the front? What backline talent do we have that was underplayed and undeveloped?

I didn't think Ojeda looked any different in preseason than he had previously. That said he does sometimes look close to breaking out and I can see where the prediction comes from. It still seems wildly optimistic that he will be YPOY, we saw enough Matinez + Bakrar lineups in the preseason to indicate that Pascal is entertaining the idea of starting Martinez at LW with Ojeda on the bench.

That's kind of what I thought. I'm cautiously hopeful he can break out this year, but didn't think preseason moved the needle much.

I don't know that Mitja has improved noticeably (eye test/bullshit alert), even if his performance level is higher than the forwards.

Ilenic, probably, though he played more than the others
