General MLS Discussion

Philly has nothing to play for, technically, right?

That Sucks The Office GIF

They don't, but I feel like we go through things like that every season and it doesn't really matter. Philly probably isn't resting guys after already having a week off due to the international window, so odds are it's going to be a representative game. Plus you don't know how the pressure of needing to win impacts Charlotte.

Miami wins, Orlando loses.

In short, a NYCFC win and CHA loss/tie gets us the 4-seed.

If we tie or lose, Nashville can slip ahead of us with a win vs Miami.

If we win, we are guaranteed no worse than the 5-seed, which locks us in to a first-round series against Charlotte. Slipping to a 6-seed would set us up to face either Cincy or Miami in the first round.
If we win, Nashville win, Charlotte lose, don't we have the tie against Nashville?

By tie I mean we will be playing against.
This is one of many reasons I hate the stupid US soccer fan affectation of adopting UK language usage.
Please don't waste my time using words in needlessly ambiguous ways.
I wrote an answer to the question you asked using standard American English, but not the question in the foreign slang secretly in your head.

I'll be honest it didn't even occur to me, I just use the word that way because I've heard and seen it used for so long in multiple sports, and since I was thinking of the playoff matchup I wasn't even thinking of "tie" in the way you were 🤷‍♂️
