Again, too many are ignoring the mental aspect of the game. We have to master that to have a chance - and if we do, I think we are the better team, but it is a big "if".
No soccer game anywhere ends up 7-0 without one team totally shitting the bed. Were the Red Bulls better that game? Yes. But it takes a lot more than a tactical or personnel advantage to get to that kind of score. Our guys came in pretty jacked, and probably not in control of their emotions. Then they were thrown off balance by the early goal and the Red Bulls' physicality, and the one-sided officiating, and they totally lost it. It didn't help that tucked away in the backs of many players' minds was doubt about even being able to win. I could see them losing the string on the field as the first half progressed, and when I saw that New Jersey had added a third goal just before the half, I knew something like 7-0 was a distinct possibility.
Yes, certain things being raised here and elsewhere are important. The battle to play out of the back vs. high pressure is huge. Our ability to defend set pieces, and their general weakness on the back line could play a big role. Our rest and their recent run of games is something to watch.
Still, there is a threshold issue. Can our guys carry the right attitude and keep focused for 90 minutes? Are they going to play loose? or tight? When adversity arrives, will they start to doubt themselves? Can they keep cool when the Red Bulls start to foul and bait them? Do they really believe in themselves in this game? Can they use the atmosphere of the derby to fuel themselves without losing their focus? There are a lot of tightropes they are going to have to navigate in the mental game.
More than anything else, this is what I am going to be looking for in the game - especially in the first 20-25 minutes. Let's see if our guys come to play. If so, I think we are the favorites, but they have to be totally in the game first.
