Again, too many are ignoring the mental aspect of the game. We have to master that to have a chance - and if we do, I think we are the better team, but it is a big "if".

No soccer game anywhere ends up 7-0 without one team totally shitting the bed. Were the Red Bulls better that game? Yes. But it takes a lot more than a tactical or personnel advantage to get to that kind of score. Our guys came in pretty jacked, and probably not in control of their emotions. Then they were thrown off balance by the early goal and the Red Bulls' physicality, and the one-sided officiating, and they totally lost it. It didn't help that tucked away in the backs of many players' minds was doubt about even being able to win. I could see them losing the string on the field as the first half progressed, and when I saw that New Jersey had added a third goal just before the half, I knew something like 7-0 was a distinct possibility.

Yes, certain things being raised here and elsewhere are important. The battle to play out of the back vs. high pressure is huge. Our ability to defend set pieces, and their general weakness on the back line could play a big role. Our rest and their recent run of games is something to watch.

Still, there is a threshold issue. Can our guys carry the right attitude and keep focused for 90 minutes? Are they going to play loose? or tight? When adversity arrives, will they start to doubt themselves? Can they keep cool when the Red Bulls start to foul and bait them? Do they really believe in themselves in this game? Can they use the atmosphere of the derby to fuel themselves without losing their focus? There are a lot of tightropes they are going to have to navigate in the mental game.

More than anything else, this is what I am going to be looking for in the game - especially in the first 20-25 minutes. Let's see if our guys come to play. If so, I think we are the favorites, but they have to be totally in the game first.
I think this is the positive phrasing of my take on the game. I just didn't have it in me to spin it. I have a lot of doubts about our team's mental toughness.

So.... Does Mena get another start coming off a shutout win, or do we go back to Calamity Jason because he's had more experience losing to RB? I really hope it's Mena so he can match up better with his speed and size - and maybe we'd even win a set piece header with him in.

Any possibility we start out in 5-3-2 to prevent bleeding from the beginning?

Remember PV's reasoning for starting Saunders in Toronto (when it was a perfect opportunity to start Lurch) was he was coming off a shutout in Portland. If he'll ride the hot hand in that scenario (with short rest), he should also do so with Mena here.

We play horribly at the end of games when we bring in an extra CB to play a 5-3-2 and try to protect the lead. No, we need to go with either a 433 or a 442 so the back four fully understand their assignments.

I wonder if Mena has had some problems in possession in practice with playing out of the back. I don't think he's as consistent or trustworthy as Hernandez has proven, but he wasn't as bad as he was in '15 last weekend. Realistically, the best bet for a win is the throw in whoever will be able to get the ball out of pressure best. And we've seen a lot of success in the last few lineups in doing that.

Another bit of emphasis on the importance of the mental side of Sunday's game.

It is from none other than Mr. Mental himself, Jesse Marsch.

Glenn Crooks: Jesse, you have been dominant in the first four matches of this derby over the last two seasons earning three points in every game. To what do you credit your success against New York City FC?

Jesse Marsch: The most important element for me has been understanding the competitive and mental approach for what these games require. On all four days, I think our group understood what real matches are about and they cared a lot less about passing completion and how pretty the game looked and more about finding a way on every single play to come out ahead. That’s what the best games require. At the end of the day it’s going to come down to, are we up for the match.

That was at the beginning of a very interesting Q&A between Glen Crooks and New Jersey's finest ball throwing maniac.

HANOVER, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls have won all four #NYderby matchups so far and they’re coming off a memorable 7-0 victory the last time they met five weeks ago.
But the Red Bulls are claiming that they will be the angry team heading into Sunday’s rematch(Noon ET; ESPN in the US, TSN4 in Canada; ticket information) and it is their recent dip in form that they say has them foaming at the mouth.

Patrick Vieira should have made a point of it in interviews this week specifically focusing on fouls by Lloyd Sam et al in the last game. Make it such an issue that there's no way the refs can turn a blind eye without looking inept. It's worked before in the NFL and NCAA where coaches have highlighted tactics by cornerbacks & offensive linemen and come gametime, the player is flagged every time it's even close.

I want to see a yellow if a RB player even breathes hard on Pirlo/Lamps/Iraola. And as awful as this may sound, I have a feeling RB is going to target Pirlo in light of his current emotional state because they'll figure he's the easiest right now to knock off his game. I want the refs to especially protect him from the abuse.

Dude take off the tin foil hat and get over the reffing. You still won't let it go. You're embarrassing yourself at this point with this "MMA" talk.

Last game we just didn't show up and although Sam should have been booked in the end in largely didn't matter because we couldnt score.

If we can't put balls in the back of the net against the jersey boys then nothing else will matter. Villa needs to step up and finally score in one of these games.

Yes I would like the refs to be better this time but I think a good team effort is more key to winning than these intangibles going our way.
