Do we expect any lineup changes? Lopez is available but Mix is the better player.

-----McNamara----Villa----Shelton-----
---------------Pirlo-----Diskerud----------
--------------------Iraola-------------------
----RJ--Hernandez--Brillant--White----
--------Sadly Not Eirik Johansen--------

Hopeful Substitutions...
- Lampard for Pirlo
- Mendoza for Shelton
- Harrison for McNamara
Mikey brings a lot of energy to the team. Mix just does not fit into what we are doing right now!

Mix definitely plays. The midfield looked better yesterday with him and Iraola.

I hope if we're leading, the subs are: Medhi, Mena, and Martinez. Play a 6-3-1 if needed but close out the fcking game for a change.

Martinez as a sub for white or should he start if healthy? Have white sub in.

How about the team doesn't:

-Get blown out by seven goals
-Go behind in the first minute on a blunder by the keeper
-Slip and miss a penalty that would ice the game
-Give up a goal in the 90+ minute to throw away two points

All of that has happened (some multiple times) in the past four home games.

To borrow a "special" phrase this team is a specialist in failure. I'm trying to remain positive but seriously it's hard when it doesn't matter who they start, someone will stink up the joint.

Let's see what else could be on the menu:
-own goal
-red card/PK special to lose a lead and go down to 10
-encroachment to nullify a penalty, which Villa then misses the retake
-Saunders somehow misses a GK which hits a defender and goes into his own net

The team is more comedy than anything else right now.

Shit! I'll be at a golf tourney all day and couldn't make it in person but the timing was perfect to catch it on TV. Now I see its tape delayed. Bullshit. 100% agree with adam adam on coverage. After a full day on the sun I'll be passed out by 11:30. Damn!!!!!

Good news. I'm missing the game, so you will be in for a treat. A win, golazos, free chicken buckets, Unimas instant classic, etc. I miss very few games, but when I do, they are memorable ones (at least for everyone else). You can go ahead and add 3 points to the playoff chances thread today, it's that certain. Enjoy!

A Lampard start would not surprise me

Me neither, but I am going to guess that Coach V waits until after the break to try him for extended minutes. Just a hunch.

The big question is whether we see Iraola at CDM, where he did surprisingly well, or Lopez. That has knock on effects for who plays CM (Mix or Mikey) and LB (RJ or Martinez).

My guess is that we keep it pretty consistent.

Looking forward to watching Rimando in person. One of the all-time greats of MLS.
Watching Beckerman was one of the things that got me most excited about the home schedule, and he's at Copa America. Oh well.

Mikey is more of a ball-winning midfielder type. He works better out of the CM spot than the CDM spot because his work rate is much better than his positioning. He's so aggressive in closing down that he's not great coverage for your CBs.

It's not your best lineup, but if Mikey's in, I'd want to see him at CM paired with Pirlo in a more advanced role, and Iraola as a deep-lying playmaker at CDM. Iraola gives us so much playing out of the back, and that's clearly something we're very stubborn about this year. So -- pretty much where Mix is at now.

Can Poku play in Shelton's place? Would be interested to see that change. Lurch in for Saunders too but that wont ever happen. Besides that I like the lineup from Orlando.
He played on the left wing against Toronto after about the first 15 mins when PV flipped Poku and Ballouchy. I think that was mostly because Poku was leaving holes in the midfield. I've long been curious about Poku on the wing cutting in but, whenever he plays, I think you need to build defensive support around him. I thought his defensive work against Toronto was pretty poor.

The wingers seem to be playing less defense lately, and Poku is so much better at dribbling past defenders than Shelton. Makes too much sense

Shelton's position theoretically has to play defense and track back... If Poku has demonstrated in practice he can do that then it's possible, but if he can't consistently mark the outside back bombing forward, then he'd be a liability in the role.

If PV really believes offense is the best defense then I dont see why Poku can't make the cut. We used to play Iraola as a fullback and he was always a defensive liability going forward, same with Mata (and both are part of the back 4!) I don't see why one of our better attacking players has to be held to a higher standard in terms of tracking back and defense than our fullbacks.

Also is Mendoza any better at tracking back and playing D? He has been getting the start and I havent seen it.

Mendoza has definitely been tracking back when on the field - the last 10 secs of the last game are still in question....

And I don't think the offensive players are being held to a higher standard, for they do have responsibilities regarding defending the opposing full-backs and also pressuring them, but to your point about Iraola, he had effectively lost his spot to RJ and has only just gotten starting minutes back with a change of position (and injury to Bravo).

Not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, but I watched the interview with Vieira after the Orlando game, and he was asked about the home record. He seemed to not get it - he just shrugged it off and said (more or less) if we can't get the points at home we will have to get them on the road. Not sure if he knows what the odds of making the playoffs are with those results. I really think he needs to ditch the 4-3-3 at home (specifically the wingers). I think if we tried a 4-2-3-1 with the outside mids pulled in a bit we might have more success creating through the middle. Put Lamps at CAM with TMac left, Mix right, then you can still play Bravo next to Pirlo in the back. The field is just too small to be trying to provide through wingers, and with 2 guys sticking to the sidelines it leaves us too light in the midfield to keep the possession he wants.

Broadcast Questions

Since the YES Network will not be live, does anyone know what the streaming will be for this game? I have heard Fox Sports Go will broadcast live, but right now their schedule only has it on at 11:30pm. Presumably that will change.

The problem with Fox Sports Go is that it does not allow replays. So, for those of us who will have to watch later in the evening, we can't DVR, and we can't stream on a delayed basis as we could with Watch ESPN.

One question is whether MLS Live will allow streaming of the game right after it ends. Usually they do this for a non-nationally broadcast game, but I wonder if they will open it up for New Yorkers before the delayed broadcast is finished.
