NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

Interesting.

This article clears up a misconception circulating here (and elsewhere) about the funding for these signings. It is not coming from the government. These are wealthy private owners who are not immune to splashing cash in order to enjoy the prestige of having signed a top player - especially when the absurd amount they spent (and can thereby presumably afford) is splashed across the newspapers.

There is also the fact that the Chairman is a big soccer fan, so it is believed that spending a lot of money on soccer is a good way to stay in the government's good graces.
Countries like China want to use sports to increase the prestige and rep of the country. Seemd like they want owners to invest in developing Chinese players.

That's why Qatar is dumping money in getting athletes from other countries to represent them in world competitions like the Olympics.

They have a big soccer academy recruiting players from Africa and other middle eastern countries in hopes they will be able to do well when they "host" in 2022.

And if they don't work out as players, I'm sure alternative work arrangements are easy to come by.

Abhorrent shits they are.

Thats more desire to win. China is more nationalistic. They want Chinese athletes to win not necessarily mercs.

You have to think this will affect his decision to play in MLS and if so what team he play for...

Wouldn't think it changes anything. It's a separate league and there's no promotion between them.

The only chance of a competitive match would be a US Open cup tie. But that is an unlikely scenario. And he likely wouldn't be on the USOC squad anyway wherever he is.

Unless it becomes an affiliate of MLS club.

I think it meant he would want to be close to his ownership interest

Saw Lucas Biglia is talking to Atlanta. Question is...why aren't WE talking to him?
I know some people like him, but I wouldn't want to touch him. Every time I see play with Argentina he reminds me of Mena (although different positions). Always seemed to be looking for the ball.

He doesn't play well for country. I've noticed that myself too. He's a different player for club though. As a player, he's probably a better all around defensive midfielder than anyone in MLS imo. Whether or not his play would translate well to MLS is up for debate. I'd prefer Khedira for our club anyways.

Khedira has 2 years on his contract and his value is north of $20 million. We're never going to pay that from all indications. I can mostly understand why Juventus let Pirlo go without a fee, but why the hell would they do it again for the much younger Khedira?

If a transfer fee is just tacked onto a player's salary, considering Khedira would be a DP, his effect on the salary cap would be the DP limit. So, NYCFC could pay as high as a transfer fee as they want and it wouldn't make a difference on the salary cap. On the income statement, though, it would be a different matter.

$20M would be far and away the highest transfer to MLS.
