NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

You were right, I was wrong. Still not sure what Castellanos tells us about Dome's assessment of the squad—maybe it was just too good an intra-CFG YAM deal to pass up?—but NYCFC is thinking of him as a winger.

What makes you say they think of him as a winger-only?

My gut says Tommy and Wallace are in the rotation and Dome doesn't want them in the rotation. If he impresses in training and maybe gets a few runs out there down the stretch, we go into next year with something like this for a primary attacking rotation:

F: Villa, Berget
W: Tajouri-Shradi, Medina, Castellanos, Lewis

Hopefully if Villa retires, we splash on a new DP up top.

Both Reyna and Dome referred to him as a 7 and 11 first, which jibes with the skillset we've seen in his videos. Your read on the depth chart situation looks right to me, although I'm skeptical Villa will be around next season.

And that would be good or bad, in your opinion? I know it is almost heretical to consider it, and Villa deserves eternal recognition and a statue for what he's already done for our club, but would you prefer a 2019 season sans Villa after the way 2018 has gone so far?

It entirely depends on who we bring in to replace him, I suppose. As discussed elsewhere, I don't think it would be good for the club to not have a superstar on the roster. And is Berget up top enough to win the league? I would say likely not.

For example, Giroud only has one year left on his Chelsea contract. Maybe not him, but it would be hard to argue against a Villa <-> Giroud-level swap.

I think it's a very good thing we have Villa this season and I think it'll be a good thing if he retires next year. My only worry is that the club won't put his whole salary back into the roster.

Villa was the best thing to ever happen to our Club.

We're a better team without him next year.
Don't know if he would be open to it, and I'm not really certain on my thoughts on it, but what if we could retain him on a TAM contract and grab another DP?

I think it depends on the role he wants to play. What if he's your super sub and spot starter? He's going to play 30 minutes every match and start your midweek games. That's a role that works for us. I don't know if it works for him.

Even that may be too much for him - since the end of last season, his body has been breaking down more regularly than ever before.

Hot take - injury riddled Frank Lampard was more productive than injury riddled David Villa.

I'm 50/50 on Villa right now, but I need to see how Dome works it with him before I start dreaming about a new DP1...but the less I see of him the more that ratio changes.

Villa will return this season (probably, but we’re going on 5matches and no update) and continue to contribute, but he’s done as a DP after this season. There no justification to keep him as a DP who is north of 36 and breaking down physically. So it’s perfectly ok to start dreaming of a figurehead DP1 while not doing disservice to Villa’s accomplishments.

wasnt his contract done anyway after this year? i thought the extension was just till end of 2018. It make sense that its over, but really want that title for him.

end of an era for our first player signed. dont know if people will complain if the replacement is not a known name

If we don’t have Villa or Tummy next season, we would have no more players remaining from our original 2015 roster. Roster overhaul complete and Kreis era over.

The door slams shut once TMac is gone. I don’t equate Villa with Kreis. Ever. Villa was constantly frustrated with the tactics and roster, and every picture of him in the locker room was of a guy unhappy. Villa was brought in, by CFG, not Kreis, and I have no doubt that Villa was one of the players (Lampard being the other) that had fireside chats with CFG about canning Kreis.

I believe Kreis was manager when Villa was signed. (Even if he was ‘learning’ in Manchester). Villa may not have respected him, it may not have been his call, but it was on his watch.

He was Manager. In fact, he had to sit down with Villa and convince Villa to sign (ie, he had to convince Villa he wasn’t a total hack job manager) despite him being manager. Granted, some people have mastered the interview process, and Kreis was able to fool Villa.

Edit: there is the scene in the movie where Kreis talks about having to convince a legend to join up and how it was intimidating to him. Make no mistake, that was the opportunity for Villa to pass judgement on Kreis, not the other way around.

I own Win on iTunes. I should watch it again for the refresher. Forgot all those things.
