NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

I don't think it's a given that Cropper is obviously better than Saunders or anything though. But I would think that Cropper would be a clearly better option than Johansen, who can't even beat out Saunders and takes up an international spot.
I've watched a fair bit of Cody. I am not saying he's world class, but I'm confident he's as good now as Saunders, and would be far beyond him at this point in the season.

Eta: and let's be honest, Lurch is not a starting keeper outside second division of Viking leagues. He's slow, slow, slow. He's smart and decent on the ball, so I'd take him over Saunders. But that's an indictment of Slosh and the front office. Not him.

Cropper wouldn't change anything this year. PV has made it clear he is riding Saunders to the end of '16. Our next goalie will come during the winter transfer.

The only two options I see are:
1. PV is clueless about GK and thinks either josh is good or it doesn't matter how good your GK is...
or
2. They have someone big lined up like Casillas.
To your first point:

Vieira loves Saunders leadership skills and sees him as a valuable squad member.

To your second point:

Rumors were floating around that NYCFC had made inquires into at least 2 GKs during the window, so I doubt they have anyone lined up. Casillas himself said the deal to move to MLS fell through because they weren't willing to pay him a DP salary.

I think they know they need to upgrade the keeper position but that was not priority this season which I agree with. They may or may not have a big name lined up but sure they will make an offer if they find a right fit at that position.

This. They know they want to upgrade there. I'll be very surprised if we go through another window (especially a winter one) without a new signing there. Hard to see that position not being #1 priority this offseason.

Some interesting tidbits on Cropper. Apparently, NE had his discover rights for a long time and wasn't willing to trade them. Another team made inquiries, which is when NE's discovery claim became apparent and negotiations began with them. The article suggests, somewhat strangely, that he is competing for a backup role, and it also suggests that Cropper may end up moving to his stateside home of Minnesota in the expansion draft.

And the stupidity of MLS marches on.

Can a team put a discovery rights on a kid before they join a academy even if it's a different club?

If Minnesota is his likely destination, then this seems to be a way for NE to lock up a guy they know will be picked this allowing more security for the players they're aiming to keep.

A bit convoluted, but understandable if Cropper really wants to go home and the team trying to get his discovery rights wouldn't later want to trade with Minnesota. Not sure what NE gets then other than the expansion draft coverage - is that worth more than the $50k of Garber bucks???

Discovery rights are a misnomer - they aren't for discovering new/unproven talent, but rather they're calling dibs on existing pros.

Very interesting. Could we be doing this with Saunders? While we know what Saunders is, he may be attractive to an expansion team (Starting keeper on a playoff team, as well as a reported leader and good locker room presence). As Ulrich mentioned, it allows us to pull someone else off the unprotected list.
Are there any added benefits of having a guy taken off your roster via expansion draft vs. releasing the guy outright?

Or maybe they signed Cropper with the intention of trading him to Minnesota in exchange for a promise not to draft a player in the expansion draft (if they have one)
