It really aint that bad. And when we get DP3 it looks even better. Can't wait to see all the numbers and what this costs to put together.

That's what LA is currently doing with Van Damme

http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/01/19/report-la-galaxy-set-re-sign-jelle-van-damme-new-contract

"The report said Van Damme will begin this season as a Designated Player, but will be bought down using TAM during the summer, in order to free up space for the Galaxy to potentially add another DP at midseason."
Thanks, so then this totally is an option. I just hadn't heard about it being done before myself, so was completely confident that it could be done.

I would absolutely love this to happen, but I'm not certain if MLS rules will allow this to happen because I don't it has ever happened before. Remember that we had a chance to do this with Mix prior to Pirlo coming on board and we did not do it. Now that could have been because our FO just wasn't smart enough and didn't figure that out. But just consider that the ability to have someone as a DP first-half and then switching them over may not be a done deal.

Remember that the original TAM was created because LA wanted to buy down Omar Gonzalez's contract to allow Giovani dos Santos to sign mid-season. Absolutely can be done.

NYCFC never had Mix as a DP, his cost was offset / bought down with GAM so that his salary charge (after GAM) was below the DP threshold. So in effect Mix was the most costly player cap-wise as while Pirlo and Villa were both $457K of cap money, Mix was really $750k of full cap money when you factored in the GAM.

Getting rid of Mix means that NYCFC should be able to sign at LEAST 2 starting quality players (if not 3).

Interesting analysis. The cap hit always showed as 750k right?

That's assuming dropping him frees that money back up. It could be that once you use GAM it's gone. If we dumped him we would only have the balance between what we bought down. Now I don't know if this is how it works but it's certainly possible.

I would say if the new CB means we go to a 3 man back line, or if it pushes chanot into a CDM role that ofori would be redundant. You don't want 2 acting CDMs next to pirlo. At that point, Camargo or Harrison is better placed in the third MF spot.

Just judging from highlight reels, Ofori is more than capable of bombing forward. He could also play higher for a high press. I'd call him a CM/CDM.

If we use your lineup we shed an average of 3 years per player from last year's starters. Pretty impressive when you consider we would be returning 8 starters who all got a year older. Speaking of which, I'd love to have a 33 year old Villa on this team...

Agreed. Except if Chanot moves to RB

I think it depends on how much they plan to let Mata and whoever plays RB/RWB go forward. You could play two CDMs and let the outside backs push up at will and likely still be okay.

The "cap hit" would be whatever was left after using GAM to buy down his salary. We don't know what it is except that it is below $457k.

Think of it like 2 funding pools - the cap and GAM. Imagine NYCFC starts with the cap of $3.8m and GAM of $1m. Their total salary budget is then $4.8m. Pirlo and Villa are both $457k in the salary budget. Mix costs $750k which we know at least $293k was GAM.

GAM is total shadow money. It's never disclosed how much each team has.

So he would have cost us 457k? Eliminate that, pay $250k on a transfer. Pay the guy 150k a year for a two year contract. He hits the cap at 275k. That sound about right?

When I say 334, I really mean 3331 sort of look. I think of potential new guy cdm tbd as being a forward destroyer. Shit. I'm too tired to write about. Tomorrow I'll do better. Or try.

Remember too that much of TAM is a big lump sum that can be used in one year or carried over to the next. This helps smooth out the effect of acquisition costs that might have to be incurred in a single year.

I am not quite getting this point. If we haven't yet paid him for 2017 and 2018, then the GAM used for that isn't "gone". Maybe (probably) I am missing a deeper point here, but I do think that if we cut him this offseason or deal him on a free, then we aren't out anything for the next two years. The only exception would be a transfer in which we agree to assume some portion of his salary, but I don't see why we would do that if we can cut him an assume none of it.
