NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

I could be wrong, but I thought GAM didn't expire, but TAM does. Use it or lose it.

It can be carried forward one year. So, for example, if we only used $600K of our $1.2 million in 2016 TAM, we will have $600K to combine with what we get in 2017. Technically, unused TAM at the end of 2017 is supposed to revert back to the league, but I would be surprised if they didn't continue allowing a one-year rollover once TAM levels are set for 2018 and beyond.

That's assuming dropping him frees that money back up. It could be that once you use GAM it's gone. If we dumped him we would only have the balance between what we bought down. Now I don't know if this is how it works but it's certainly possible.

That's been my reading of the situation. I believe GAM once spent is completely gone.

Nat Borchers is a free agent. I know he's 35yo but he's said to be a great locker room presence and could help settle the back line with his experience. IF the price was right

But we haven't spent it yet. At least not for 2017 or 2018.

Is there an assumption here that we "spent" the GAM for all 4 years when we signed the contract? I don't think that's how it works.

Have we spent the GAM yet for this year? Probably not, but there in lies the rub we don't actually know how the money is spent. It could very well be that we spent 4 years of GAM on the contract and we aren't getting it back. The big question is how does MLS force you to allocate the spending.

Is it spent on a pro rated basis, i.e. Every week they paycheck is bought down, which functionally means that GAM is spent in half season increments. Or is it "spent" once a player is locked down into the roster, you spend it fully for the year once the team starts playing. Or is it spent the moment a contract is signed. We do not know.

Here's what we do know, Mix is deadweight and actively making the club worse by his presence. He eats up something like 12.5% of our cap space and a large chunk of our yearly GAM and provides exactly zero on the field. He's played himself onto the bench and then off the bench and into the reserves under two consecutive coaches despite being one of our best players. And you know what, we can't even sell him. I'm thinking we cant even cut him either due to his very player friendly contract, otherwise we would have already.

Another player we might have our eyes on. Angel Herrera, young CDM from Venezuela, allegedly has an offer from CFG as opposed to Manchester City so there's a decent chance he'll be moved to Melbourne or NYCFC.

Could be a possible replacement option for Mikey Lopez considering his injury. Would obviously still prefer Ofori, but Herrera could be in that late game sub role that Mikey carved his role in.

MLS rules are odd, I will grant you, but I can't imagine they charge us with spending on a contract if we don't actually spend it.

Mix gets appx $760K per year. $300K or so is paid with GAM. $460K or so is paid via the regular salary budget. There is no reason to think a club is charged for any of it until that amount is paid. These aren't transfer fees, which get charged (and paid) up front and might then get credited if the player is sold. This is just straight salary. If we don't pay it (or even if we do via a buy out), then we aren't charged.
