NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

If you sign young DPs or young expensive talent and build them up with the intent to sell, you can build a VERY talented team.

Strive to become the Celtic of MLS. Go out and get that young, up and coming talent. Guys who may sit on the bench in Europe for a years. Let them play here. Sell them on when they have fully matured and reinvest those funds. If you can couple that with Homegrowns and 1-2 major DP signings, it's the making of a strategy unique to NYCFC because our scouting reach extends across the globe.

I doubt guys like Matarrita and Ofori are interested in joining Columbus. I doubt MLS had even scouted those guys. Or Chanot for that matter.

It's even better than Celtic's strategy. Celtic's league mates don't have a cap that constrains them. They could try to spend and catch up if they could afford to. In the MLS, selling off players allows for increased cap space in the form of GAM and the acquisition of additional talent that other teams can't afford to do even if they wanted to. It could have an exponential cycle if worked correctly. We'll see what happens.

Would love it if we had a chance for Honda. I think his style fits MLS perfectly.

As a fellow Asian, I can vouch that his off the field impact in NYC will rival the likes of Jeremy Lin. He'll create excitement in the Asian soccer community (and not necessarily just soccer) in NYC, which is currently an untapped market, and we'll suddenly have a large following in Japan. Our team will essentially be on the news all over Japan on a weekly basis (similar to the buzz Jeremy is creating in Taiwan)

I'd argue that Honda is still the biggest soccer celebrity in Japan. His signing would check all the boxes for me.

I like it for all those reasons too. The only box he doesn't check is need. Unless we already have our 6 on the roster in the form of Chanot or some other player PV is looking to pull an Iraola with, we really would be once again signing a DP without considering how they fit into our roster, as well as the future roster we continue to build. Honda will not only leave our roster puzzle with an unfinished piece, his piece would also replace another younger player's position, hindering their development.

So, unless you can explain how marketing dollars will translate to wins (and maybe there are ways to look at it from that perspective) I'm not interested.

Im still on the khedira hype train. PV is master of coachspeak. Nothing he said ruled out a possible summer transfer.
Yeah, that's exactly what I think. There's too much smoke around all of this, including Juve looking at bringing in replacements.

I suspect a big reason that we aren't getting him right now is that Liverpool won't sell them Can. Everybody can get back to the table this summer and work it out.

It's true that we're in need of a 6, but do we necessarily need to fill our 6 with a DP? Finding DPs are difficult, and if the opportunity to bring in a DP sooner rather than later that would fit PV's system comes to the negotiation table, why turn it away?

Khedira would be an ideal fit, don't get me wrong. But even if he does join, I don't see him joining till the summer or when his contract is up. If Honda is open to join this window (more likely the case as he's not a big piece in Milan's plans), he wouldn't fill our biggest need per se, but would add a level of playmaking ability that were missing (look at the two finalists from last year, Seattle and Toronto)

As for impeding the development of our young players, sometimes it's better if we groom them more rather then thrust them into the starting 11 and expect a full 90 shift while they're 20-22 years old. MLS is a big step up from many of our youngsters, and I'd argue that training with the likes of Honda and our other DPs won't impede their development.

You're correct, signing the right DP is difficult. That's why we don't have to rush it as sooner then later. I'd be fine with the club waiting till the summer to see if there is a better fit at DP. If not, we can assume Honda will be around then as well. If we don't get DP3 till the summer it's not the worst thing in the world.

We need a 6 - no, we need two of them, a starter and a reserve.

And given our desire to play out of the back and our need for a strong shield in front of our back 4, it is arguably the most important position on our team.

It is well worth spending DP money to get a too notch guy.

Pro-rel Winter schedule for MLS!

As for older DPs vs. younger ones, I agree we should pursue a mix of both. Remember that the older guys do more than just attract fannies to the seats. They also help set the tone in the locker room and provide an example to the younger guys of how to be a top professional. And, they can also be really f-ing good.

True. But they can be meh, too. No guarantees, just like with every signing. Still, rather sign them than not, of course.

I guess I'd score us at about 50-55% so far on DP signings. Out of 3, one great one, two who combined to be pretty good and miss a lot of time (either due to injury, time of signing or, you know, that other thing). So full credit on one, and almost full credit combined on the other two.

They also help with recruiting. The announcement for Callens said he was going to play with Villa and Pirlo. Didn't even mention the team.
