NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

This is how I read this, and I couldn't help but nod.

You know who we could likely get on a free this summer and he might be doable with TAM? Lucas Leiva. Of course, I'm an LFC supporter, but I would feel that way anyway.

That guy is the ultimate professional, and he would put in AllStar level performances as a holding mid or CB. He is exactly the kind of player I think would be a great example for youth, as well. It's one thing to have legends to learn from, but just as important imo to have some guys who know how to carve out a decade long career by putting in the hard yards. If it's not too harsh, I'd suggest that is a more appropriate goal for our guys.
I know you rate him as a player, but are you throwing his name in the hat because LFC is going to revamp the roster after this season and make some big cuts?

He's been told he can go wherever he wants after the season since they had to end up turning down the Inter sale because of all of the injuries.

I mean, it's better for LFC to sell him, of course. But everyone just loves the guy because he's been absolutely team first, so they'll let him do what he wants. The key would be convincing him that NYC is what he wants.

plus he has great hair
He does, doesn't he. And don't underrate this.

But seriously, you don't stick around at Liverpool or any top-half PL team for as long as he has if you're a donkey. He's a great example of a guy who was signed with one thing in mind and totally adjusted to circumstances and his own limitations. I mean, he was supposed to sort of be close to a Coutinho-type when he was bought. Used to bang them in and serve up assists back in Brazil.

Comes in, personnel and injuries happen so that role never fires for him, but the dude goes on and just sticks for any manager, any shape, whatever. He always finds his way to 20-30 starts across competitions, appearing in most every game. He may make a mistake or two across the entire year, but otherwise, he's a lock to do that exactly what's asked of him.

All of that said, he is supposedly on 80k pounds per week, so I've just shelved my fantasy of signing him on TAM to be our main holder/sweeper. So, shit.

I do think he would be a great fit, though. I've sort of mulled it more seriously since Klopp talked him into rejecting inter (in case the FO called wanting a report). He's just a tough bastard and the definition of team first. Probably the hardest Liverpool player to find supporters talking shit about. Im sure it's out there, but never seen it.

Alright. I'm done with my love poem. Point made. But If I were head of NYCFC, I'd take him over a Yaya-type and wouldn't think twice. He's a cheaper Mascherano.

ETA: also, i want a Brazilian on our team like 75% as much as a DM, because...Brazil. He would cure both.

Anyone want to come up with a short list of guys on the bench in 2nd division or 2nd tier leagues? I want to better align my expectations with the reality of what we're going to do.

What about Gringo Torres? Is he getting any time? Joe Benny is a rotational starter for Xolos, so he's probably out of the question since he would need to be a DP for us. Same for Mikey Fiscal.

How about Nemec? He scored a lot in 2.bundesliga

I mean, fucking hell, you'd think we could at least go for a Gignac level signing.

Salt.in.the.wound.

I think we went around looking for young players and low-balling them for DP/TAM convertible contracts. Capped our offer at $1 million. That's why we were rejected so many times and why the leaked names are all at an underwhelming level.

I would not be surprised to see Moralez named a DP, but turns out he's here on $800k a year and could be bought down with TAM during the summer window.

Let's hope so man

Yes, and this is why we can't jump to any conclusions if he is announced as a DP. We need to see his comp and/or how the club goes hunting in the summer.

.

I think you are underselling the players MLS is going after. Alexander Ring and Alex Callens were both performing at a very high level in their second divisions. They were probably above that level, but probably not good enough for the first division. So they are moving up (arguably) to a better league. Nothing wrong with MLS not being as good as La Liga or Bundesliga. I'd personally rather someone who was performing great in the 2.bundesliga than an outcast from a club like Hoffenheim or Mainz.

I've said this before too about Moralez. He is not a bench player for Leon. He has been thus far this year as he missed time recovering from injury. Injuries have plagued his career, which that is my biggest concern about him.

You don't start 100+ Serie A games and then somehow become not good enough to start for an average Mexican club.

Nothing wrong with any of that. But it's a far cry from the Giovinco-situation that most of us envisioned and clamored for.

You can't compare Ring/Callens with Giovinco.

It's only fair to compare our next DP with Giovinco. I think it is obvious the club would like both a TAM P and DP on the roster for 2017.

I think the comparison was Moralez and Giovinco. Moralez is no Giovinco. I'd still be content with him as a DP, but it certainly wouldn't be some incredible DP signing that we've been hoping would happen.

I happen to agree with that line of thinking.

My issue is with the people who are upset that we lowballed players with sub $1 Million contracts to try and attract them here. We are trying to utilize a roster mechanism that is unique to MLS. Maybe it's how we attracted Maxi on non-DP contract? I hope so. I wouldn't be thrilled with that PROFILE of player as a DP.

Maxi could be a game-changing player for us. He has had the necessary career blip incentivizing him to move to MLS. The bench in Mexico (injury driven?) is a good thing. And he has the skill set optimal for dominating MLS defenders, a perfect and necessary compliment to Villa. It wasn't long ago when he was zipping around for Atalanta. He will be a fan favorite. He clearly is no Gio , but clearly could be in the next tier of successful MLS players. If we get him on a deal below DP or as a temporary DP, that would be exciting. If he's a real DP, it would be a let down imagining who else could have filled that spot, while giving it some time to judge in hindsight.

I think most of us are OK with the potential of his signing - it's just a slap in the face to be spending so little if he is a DP.
I'm also in the camp of wanting a big name. Call me a star fucker, but I want to go to Yankee Stadium and see the Pirlos and Villas of the world.

I don't totally agree. I think guys with much thinner resumes, like Piatti or Valeri, have been very successful, whereas Pirlo has been mildly disappointing. I don't know exactly why. A working theory could be that being a rung above MLS quality is better suited to also understand MLS's limitations, whether for some world class players like Pirlo, who is a distributor and not a dribbler, it's harder to adapt to the limitations of his teammates: too-creative passes that go misunderstood, balls into space where nobody runs, etc. I don't know. The idea that Pirlo's mind is still going too fast for MLS while his body is moving more and more slowly, so he gets caught by aggressive opposing DMs while trying to adjust.
