Nycfc V Whitecaps Postmatch

It depends whether you are talking league or overall. Between the Montreal and Toronto wins in June there was the US Open Cup game against the Cosmos impersonators, so that ended the winning run overall.
So everyone's correct! Or wrong, but let's stay positive.
The "across all competitions" thing always struck me as a dodgy way to manipulate numbers. If it helps you, count the cup games. If not, only the league. Here I admit I actually forgot about the Cosmos loss (or at least where it was in the calendar) and relied on my spreadsheet of team results in league games.

Maybe i don't pay enough attention to US soccer but i thought the cosmos closed in the 70's

There's a new version in the NASL. We played them in the US Open Cup which is a tournament of all or most US professional teams and we lost after leading 2-0 and Kreis made a series of very questionable substitutions.

It's really a moot point, but the guy I quoted off Twitter had it all wrong. When I went back to check he

definitely said it was our 1st 3 game winning streak in MLS, so the match vs the fake Cosmos had no bearing.

Yeah bae! Our 2nd 3 game winning streak!

Of course, most people in the world would see winning the Supporters Shield as "winning the league", which, y'know... it is.

In a league with this much parity though? And not an even play everyone once home and once away format? Shield is kind of a joke to me. Look at the teams records? The top teams would barely be scraping Europa league slots with records like that in major Euro leagues never mind winning titles. I think knowing there's play offs changes the way teams approach things impossible to make a direct correlation.

And we need to start our third 3-game streak next week to have any shot. Sounds easier than a 6-game streak anyway.

Some random thoughts:
* These guys have erased any possibility of the suggestion that they don't care about winning/fighting. Playoffs or not, they have been leaving it all out there.
* It was great to watch them go all-in after that awful PK was awarded against them. It paid off.
* As someone who has (not surprisingly) watched a lot more MLS play than in previous years, what is most obvious to me is that the play is much better than many would think, and the officiating is worse.
* Both of those plays resulting in PKs were far less egregious than some of the other plays that should/could have resulted in PKs.
* The most telling thing for me all night was when Lampard came to Pirlo's aid during a scuffle. Whatever you want to say about Lampard, it demonstrated to me that we have guys who will fight for each other. That's a great sign moving forward as a team beyond this season.
* While Villa probably had a frustrating night by his own standards, he still went all out from start to finish.
* Pirlo made some outrageous passes. I think next season you will see those direct kicks starting to end up in the back of the net.
* RJ Allen was generally terrific.
* Mix is a workhorse. Some may mistakenly look for flash with him, but what you are really getting is tireless hard work and consistency (especially when you take into account he is being played out of position).
* Maybe if our defense looks different next season and we bring in an anklebreaker or two, and Angelino stays, he can be molded into an outside midfielder or wing (or be afforded the opportunities to make runs out of the back if our defense is strong enough).
* Playoffs look dim, but they at least are making it interesting. And giving some glimpses of how promising next season can/will be with some appropriate tweaks.

I understand there is a list of reasons (some sensible, some simply "American sports tradition") why MLS doesn't just go by table standings and have a points-based league winner like every other league in the world, but I'd still prefer what we call the Supporters Shield to be the highest achievement in MLS. But obviously this is a discussion for another thread. I'm derailing my derail here.

Need some help. DC United is in free fall and you never know with Toronto. Win out and we certainly have a chance, albeit not the greatest. I believe.

If we don't make the playoffs though, it's for getting only 6 points in 5 matches against Philly and Chicago this season.

Don't want to take over the thread with it either. I would be fine with no play offs but then would have to be a true once home/once away format to be fair. I dunno Rugby League in both Australia and England do make a sort of big deal about best record Minor Premiers in Australia or League Leaders Shield in England but winning the play offs still bigger deal. NHL also gives out Presidents trophy for best regular season record. I think all kind of are only moderately cared about by the fan of teams that actually win them and soon forgotten by everybody else.

“We’re still alive in the playoffs, even though it’s a small, slight chance,” midfielder Mix Diskerud said. “It feels good definitely when we have the six-hour flight home.

Truth.

More Truth.

A sign of life in the universe.

Supporter's Shield gets an autobid to CONCACAF Champions League so its more than just a trophy.

The Toronto win yesterday really crushed us. I figured that was an easier hurdle for us than Montreal with their games in hand. We are 6 points behind Toronto now. They had been losing to Chicago, but came back. Imagine being 3 points behind Toronto with 3 to play? Ugh.

AJ looked awful yesterday. Grabavoy has absolutely no vision - especially for a guy who considers himself a "Central" Midfielder. Missed about 10 opportunities when he had a runner on his flank or through the middle and passed it backwards. Kills me.

The funny thing was that he was asking for the ball on Lampard's goal, just minutes after ignoring Angelino's run. No way he should ever be demanding the ball with the sort of vision he has.

When you're hanging on to a one goal lead you want someone who can pick up the ball deep in your own half and carry it forward relieving the pressure, then get back quickly to help out his defense when he can. That man is Poku. So of course Kreis waits for Whitecaps to score then brings on Poku in a midfield holding position. What is it he doesn't see in Poku that 30,000 City fans do?
Second that....his relative lack of coaching experience shows.. Kries can be a good coach in 5-10 years...he is not good enough now...

Watching NFL football and a questionable play came up with review from officials. First thought that popped into my head was our game last night with those 2 awful penalties awarded. Have the MLS ever thought about instant replays/play overturns? It would behoove them to consider that element with our notorious officiating.
