The tweet only said "younger" not cheaper or lesser well-known. Kreis wanted someone who would be around beyond next year to build around. Not exactly anything wrong with that strategy. While i hope this team builds it's longer term vision around guys like Mix, I would still like to see DP#4 go to a younger long-term guy who we can keep for several years.
Pirlo is one of very few players his age that I would be this excited about signing, but Villa, Lampard and Pirlo signings are not what I want to see long-term. They all make sense now, but as we develop this franchise we're going to have to look more long term in our future dp signings.

I have to think if the February rumors are true then they think he'll play past 2016. His is the skill set and body type that could last to 40.

Agreed that waiting for next season makes no sense. First, why do all the reports say February when the transfer window is January? Second, if he is coming next January/February then there's no need to sign him during this transfer window. We could have done it a month ago or two months from now as long as the actual transfer happens in the window.
From our perspective, as others pointed out, signing someone for one partial season is pretty weird. Not Lampardgate deceptive, but weird. From the club's POV, it won't exactly release much excitement either. After all this build-up, it would seem to be a let-down. I couldn't hate on the club for it because they never promised anything, but it would make it seem as if all their big name signings come with conditions.

Agree. Only reason I can think for saying February instead of January is that is when the team gets together for preseason. So maybe Pirlo gets time off from transfer window to start of training camp?

But definitely agree with your view that this makes little sense unless ...

They plan to have Pirlo for 2 years starting in Feb AND they have plans for another signing for the rest of this year that would assuage their fans for such a weird signing as Pirlo in 6 months.

That would give us something exciting for now plus something to look forward to. In a patchwork first year, that's not bad.

That kind of players will not be willing to go to NYCFC yet I fear.. We need a bigger "figura" or stature in world football for that, but in the long run they will arrive I´m sure.

At his age, every sprint, bump, collision , trip, kick etc starts to add up fast. If this is a come in 2016 type of signing , they better hope Juve protects him. I really hope it's not true so we can cherish the miles that are left on him.

This is why I like you. I can just make a quick stab at something, and you can come tease out all the fine points.

I was never good at showing my work. So you can imagine how much I loved law school.

I'm in the coming-in-February-doesn't-make-sense camp. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play in a match until later in July or early August, but the time-share speculation I suspect (hope) is far-fetched.

It's true. I'm his age, and I hurt my ribs sneezing yesterday.

The guy starts for the Italian national team and started for Juve and they wanted him back. The deal from everything we have been hearings is for a 1 and 1/2.... does anyone think this guy can't preform at a high level in the MLS for a year and a half? This is a huge signing and I am really excited. Everyone wanted a younger DP but we want quality more and you're not going to find much better quality available then Pirlo.

Only thing I could see is that the Italian media are confused, and we have agreed to loan him back to them at the conclusion of our season. He could take off at least most of December and January, go over there and get a few minutes of game time, train some and be nearby for any Azurri camps. Afte Euros, he comes back over for our late season push, leads us to our second consecutive MLS cup, cries, then retires, whereupon he opens a beard care products / Italian wine boutique on N Moore Street and manages to avoid doing Subway commercials.

The haters are going to hate. The people who want to say we're Chivas USA part 2, or MLS 2.o. CFG don't get how to build a team for MLS. Their not going to stop till we ram it down their throats with a good play off run.

You know what's funny? We know for a fact that NYCFC offered a DP contract to a younger Colombian striker a few months ago, the player turned it down. That means Kreis had the chance to sign whoever he wanted with the 3rd DP slot. I think what happened was very recently CFG saw they had a legitimate opportunity to sign Pirlo and they decided to take it. I think they made the right decision. Unless that young DP is a world class player, you go with Pirlo. As an brand new team, Pirlo's ability to grow our fan base is too valuable to pass up.

Yes, but the whole league would need a bigger stature for this to happen eventually. One club cannot do it alone. People have to be realistic, it could take years and a lot of money invested/being generated by the league for this to happen and you are still competing with the Champions League.

I hope anyone who's followed American sports isn't surprised by this.

Especially if you follow New York sports teams.

How many times did the Yankees sign a player the coach didn't necessarily want or like just because he was a big name or had a great performance?

Don't tell me Tim Tebow or Michael Vick were there for anything besides headlines and jersey sales for the Jets.

Even on big international teams this happens. Look at Real Madrid. You think Ancelotti was begging for Keylor Navas or James Rodriguez?
