No I released him and brought in Seb Hines."Hey sir, is your refrigerator running?"
Who happens to be as good at defending as he is at refrigeration...No I released him and brought in Seb Hines.
Xavi could definitely be an asset to the side, kreis would just have to adjust his set up, and to me, it seems like they already have the players to do so. Even though he has lost some mobility and wouldn't be able to handle a modified box to box role, he still has his tremendous passing ability which could be utilized in a deep lying playmaker role similar to what pirlo has done in the previous years. By sitting deeper he can collect the ball from the back and spring the attack with higher difficulty passes, creating a smoother transition which will have a better chance at catching the defense on its heels when trying to create scoring chances. In this role he can utilize his greatest asset, his passing and vision, while minimizing one of his greatest weaknesses, his mobility.
To combat his lack of defensive abilities playing in a deeper position, kreis would need two guys who could play as shuttlers since they don't have a dominant holding midfielder. Enter mix and grabavoy. From what I have seen of both players in the past, they could each fill the roles. They are both willing to work back and help in defense as well as jump in on the attack. They would also provide balance as mix is more skilled going forward and grabavoy is more adept defensively.
Defensively, Xavi would be another body that is naturally back although he wouldn't be expected to make key tackles. Lampard would sit underneath the striker(s) where he is better suited. From watching him with man city he has the skill to play in a more advanced role as evidenced by his link up play with silva, nasri, and yaya in their array of one touch passes. He is also very good at finding the soft spots in the box where he can score. He still has enough mobility to help out defensively and shouldn't be worn out by his limited playing time with man city. Villa would play up top and the remaining spot would go to either another striker or a wide player if kreis isn't comfortable with one of the fullbacks ability to provide width.
Obviously this wouldn't happen till the summer and would rely on key players staying healthy. Also, if they are playing well beforehand, it might not be a good idea to change the system if whatever kreis settles on in the first month or two is drastically different, but it is an option if xavi is added over the summer.
----------Villa------------------Taylor---------

It's the triple pivot midfield! Coming to you soon from UCL pitches across all of Europe. So if I'm reading right, you're essentially proposing a 4-4-2 diamond with 3 defensive minded mids, like this:
Code:----------Villa------------------Taylor--------- ------------------------------------------------ --------------------Lampard--------------------- ------------------------------------------------ -----------Grabavoy------------Mix-------------- ----------------------Xavi---------------------- ------------------------------------------------ ---Wingert----Hernandez----Facey------Williams--
Even though Xavi is parked in the typical CDM spot, Grabavoy and Mix are expected to work together to make sure one of them is back to provide true DM coverage. Seems like a big tradeoff that's not necessarily a net positive.
If we are going that route, might as well just "rotate" the diamond and play a 4-2-2-2. Just let Mix and Lampard both play AM spots, with Mix also expected to track back a bit, and let Xavi and Grabavoy/Jacobson/Poku both play DM spots, with Xavi given some freedom to run forward when he's up for it.
It will be very interesting to see what they do if we indeed bring in Xavi, because it's definitely not obvious how we'll fit both him and Lampard into an everyday lineup.
Play a 4-2-3-1. Xavi and Grabavoy underneath Mix. Lampard wide right. Villa wide left. Shelton up top
And we'd be paying both in the neighborhood of 14 mil in total.I'd do Villa up top, Calle wide left, and Lampard wide right. That might work.
Also keep in mind that Lampard and Xavi are both likely to need frequent games off. If they both rest once every three games, they may only be on the field together once every three games.
