Official Vent Thread

This exchange in another thread reminded me of something I've been meaning to rant about.

Those stacks are spewing steam, not smoke. Steam! We are supposed to be the sophisticated New Yorkers here. This means, we are all supposed to know that the stacks are modeling the stacks above the steam tunnels in NYC, which is the one thing that makes them distinctly New York.

So, why the fuck are we calling them smokestacks??? Thank god the fact that they are spewing steam is not well known outside the city, because if it were, we'd already have been ridiculed for it. It's long past time to fix this problem.

i've thought this since my first home game. and have wondered why it has never been corrected to "steam stacks"...

i guess at the game they _are_ spewing smoke? lol. but yah. i totally agree with this rant!

I thought when they were first introduced they were also linked to the industrial site on Roosevelt Island - thus, smokestacks.

Not really a vent but I find it hilarious how the transportation company in Amsterdam is called GVB and I just think "gio van bronkhorst" every time the tram, bus, or train rolls up

I was at the NYCFC event for the World Cup Final at Pig Beach in Astoria yesterday. The whole thing felt very half baked.

First off, Pig Beach in Astoria is HUGE and was an amazing spot to watch games. I made my way there for five days during the tournament, all the way from Washington Heights. The place was packed for almost all of them, and the atmosphere and service was top notch.

Yesterday, the club set up a table and had Justin Haak and Cody Mizell there. I said hello and shook hands with both of them prior to the game but by the time the game started, they were gone (although advertised to be there until 11:30). The club had one guy sitting at the table handing out wool caps, cookies and cheap bags. They had a raffle, but who knows if a winner was picked, as the table was empty by the beginning of the game.

It seemed like a missed opportunity, as there were hundreds of people there (many, like myself, who had on NYCFC gear) who are passionate about the sport. I would have had a few people working the rooms giving away swag, tickets and signing people up for a mailing list. Anything to promote the club in their new home.

The club is very uneven in hosting events. They're capable of being stellar, but you can't count on it.

I’m shocked Jack took this photo here and not taken of photo of himself walking out of the Nassau Bar (if it’s still open). Heck he was only a block over from it.

It's beyond infuriating that every single league has a special deal with a different TV provider. It makes it IMPOSSIBLE as an average viewer to watch every league.

Iknow this applies to watching shows as well, but I'm talking specifically about sports now. It's ridiculous.

It's frustrating but I can't get annoyed that separate entities sell their product to different networks. What is infuriating to me is when a single league or team splits their product among multiple providers. As an example, if your favorite NFL team is not in your local region you need to buy access to Sunday Ticket, plus Amazon Prime, plus ESPN, plus NFL network, plus local OTA network broadcasts. Sunday Ticket alone costs upwards of $300 annually, provides nothing but NFL games, and is not even complete.

This kinda shows though that people are willing to do that, even though it's extremely complicated, and football is still by far the most popular sport in the US to watch.

you're right, it's a good thing that they can sell like that so they can make the most for their product and also stop one company taking over the market, but it just sucks for us consumers that we have to then buy each and every one of those methods separately at crazy prices.

I only use ESPN for bundesliga and the occasional other game (rare). I only use Peacock for CL/EL/ECL.

Why do I need to purchase the full ESPN package just for one league? (I know, it's bc they want you to get it all so you end up consuming more of their product...) as opposed to just a subscription to _just_ the league I want.

Every streaming service wants a soccer league because it drives subscriptions. Signing a second league doesn't add much to those numbers, so the leagues get spread around. It sucks.

The thing that bothers me most is that when a league transitions off of cable and onto streaming, I now have to pay $5-10/month to watch it. But, I don't get a corresponding reduction in my cable bill. I just lose the content, and the bill stays the same - or more likely, keeps ratcheting up too.

I'm so poised to switch to home internet via T-Mobile or Verizon, then YTTV or Hulu+ which would get me at around $100.
Currently I'm at $190 for Comcast, so the savings would be significant. I would likely just add Netflix which I already have, and I guess HBO Max for US Soccer, maybe.

My vent is, T-Mobile offers home internet 5 houses down from me, but not at my house. So my choices are Comcast or now Starlink. As revolutionary and impressive as Starlink is, unfortunately it doesn't quite deliver on the value proposition for me where I live, but getting rid of Comcast has value in and of itself! So I'm waiting for either wireless coverage or a Starlink price drop.

I have a feeling the new NFL deal will have me transition out of Sling and into YTTV once the current nfl season is over & I don’t need redzone. So their plan is working.

I'm not switching internet providers but I am currently in the middle of transitioning from DirecTV to YTTV. I currently have both while wife and I get used to YTTV. I don't mind carrying both for 1-2 months because once we switch I too will save about $100 every month and come out ahead very soon. I think the only things I'm losing are YES and the MSG networks. Once the MLS Apple TV deal was official and the 2022 NYCFC season on YES ended there was little reason to keep DTV. I'll miss the Yankees, Rangers and Knicks but only a little. I understand that MSG plans to offer a standalone subscription that won't require cable or satellite but I doubt I'll pay for it (I rarely watch now) but even if I did I'd still come out ahead even if it's obscenely priced.

Thinking back to the post that started this topic, it occurs to me that the old bulk cable model offered exactly what Shwafta Shwafta seemed to want. One bill from one service that offered everything available. Everyone hated it, because everyone hated paying one big price which included a bunch of stuff they didn't want. So now we have this. Which aggregated probably costs more though there's probably a lot more sports available now, especially worldwide soccer, than at any time in even the recent past.

I think what we actually want but we rarely say directly is we should be able to get all the programming we want, including all the sports, for less money than we have to pay to get it now, regardless of how many subscriptions or bills it entails. Which is an indirect way of saying that players, leagues, federations, and owners make too much, because there's no way for us to pay less without that resulting.

Well, I don't want the old bulk cable model, which includes all sorts of other randoms. (unless i'm wrong and there was a dedicated sports bundle which, whoops) I have that with Fubo, but fubo doesn't have everything, not even close (both sports and non-sports)

I just want a bulk soccer model.

At the moment we still technically have the same old bulk cable model, it's just now it's "bulk hulu stuff" and "bulk espn stuff" and "bulk yttv stuff", each payed separately.

And also, do they make too much? yeah, 100%. Someone who plays soccer for a living should not in any right be half owning PSG and making more money per week than I'll ever see in my life. That won't change now, though, with the money in the game.

The Vikings are having a historically improbable season. Every metric from point differential to average yards gained/lost per play to expected yards per play to more esoteric stuff like DVOA plus almost everyone's eye test says they should be at best 8-7 and easily a little worse. Instead they are 12-3 with 2 games left. They are 11 and 0 in close single-score games which either tied or set a new record. It has broken multiple brains.
With minor exceptions, Vikings fans have reacted the same as have fans of any team that wins more than they probably should, which means many defiant theories about how they just know how to win and W-L is the only stat that really matters and conspiracies about why the media does not respect them. Conversely, pundits fall over each other to call the Vikings frauds and get more hysterical every week as the team keeps winning improbable games. Every win just causes everyone to believe their priors were confirmed- Vikings fans stay smug because they won; the analysts remain confident despite the result because the game stats are consistent with all of their takes.
FWIW, I think the Vikes are well coached and don't make many mistakes of the sort that give games away, but that only probably could explain being 10-5 at most. They've been very lucky. The Bills did make some mistakes like that, the Colts have maybe the worst coach in the NFL, our defense can't make stops consistently but gets a lot of timely turnovers which almost never repeats year-over-year, and opposing kickers miss on double doinks while our guy who never before showed signs of being clutch keeps hitting late game winners. It's like 50 years of hideously unfair bad team karma is being repaid in one season. And every week I expect it to end, and it doesn't, and I wait for doom the next weekend. It's honestly the most fun I've had watching them ever

But I post this here because, as someone who has spend 7 years going on and on about underlying stats and confirmation bias, and trying to get fans to acknowledge that neither the fates nor refs nor luck is against them and not overreact when results and play do not coincide, I'm sitting it all out. Apparently I have it in me to harass exactly one team community about this stuff and it's you guys. I'm sorry. And Happy New Year.
