Preseason - All Matches

The play leading up to the PK was gorgeous.

In this installment of deriving optimism from short clips of meaningless preseason matches. That was much better link-up play from Julian than we saw at the end of last season. He did those little one-two passes when he first arrived but by the end of last season, he consistently just put his head down and tried to dribble his way through the defense. Hopefully, his confidence is back and we will continue to see more link-up play from him.

In my opinion this is one of the reasons we really need to give credit to the MLS offseason period - no games for 2-4 months (depending on the team) really gives players a chance to reset, recharge, refresh. That plus the new coaching ideas I'm sure will make a difference. I think we're going to see better play.

Tat has probably nothing to do with this specific sequence, but from the other training photos I can just feel a difference from the end of last season. Is it just me?

Is 38 Carrizo?

Tackle was pretty clean.

yea. hard to tell from the camera angle, but looked like he definitely got ball to me. the only question is whether or not he had to go through the legs first.

all good though. and i don't think that is maximo. maximo usually wears 29.

according to club website (and if preseason numbers are consistent) that is drew baiera (a defender).

I thought the best case for a penalty was above the waist, but still not enough IMO. I'll take it, and who cares now anyway.

The penalty was questionable. The important point to me is that he stopped considering the player behind him. Hopefully that's a coaching opportunity.

oh wow linear tv too?
I really hope they are experimenting with local simulcasts for matches this year. I'm aware that it undermines Apple's value to some degree, but I think the league needs it, especially in markets like NY where the home clubs are not very relevant in the overall sporting/entertainment landscape.

I'm not sure why they would bother with the linear broadcasts for these matches if they weren't looking into it for regular season matches as well.

It might simply be that nobody has exclusive rights to the Coachella games so NYCFC can do this. I'm pretty sure Apple has exclusive rights to league season games, subject to limited national TV carve outs.

i dont know. i fee like its a one off because its preseason but it would still be odd. like there is no big demand for this. unless they will use this to try and promote the season pass.

Apple does have exclusive rights, but even last season some matches were appearing on YES on delay, so I've gotta think it's being considered to some degree. If you assume that some matches have super low ratings on Apple only, it very likely could be beneficial to find local partners for a portion of games, increasing exposure.
I remember being a kid in Western New England and having (I think) WB11 showing maybe 30% of Yankees games, with the rest being shown on MSG which may have been a-la-carte at the time (I know NESN was, but F the Red Sox) and I had to have good grades to convince my Mom to have it.
The WB games were enough to get me engaged in the first place, but few enough for me to eventually have to get MSG.

I don't think the Fox games are doing much for the league. League wide increases in local broadcasts probably would.

Yeah I think the YES re-airs started midway through last season.

It seems pretty clear that no one is watching these Apple broadcasts and the league (or the team) is trying to find a way to get more eyeballs on the product. The Apple deal was a massive success financially for MLS, but has been a failure in terms of league-wide visibility. They need to figure out what to do about that.

Exactly. I think some local OTA simulcasts is the perfect solution.
Apple still has exclusive streaming rights, but the league can get more initial engagements with more casual fans who are not likely to ever come across a game behind an Apple sign-in wall.

I'll be the first to admit this is the mootest of moot points and falls into the who gives a fat rats ass category, but the team will air matches from a meaningless preseason tournament ota on WWOR-TV9, but wouldn't do the same for regular season matches back in the day when they were getting the run around from YES?

its a coachella thing. Many of the games are going to be shown in the local fox/grey media channels of the teams markets. so its not really a nycfc initiative, it was lead by AEG.
