When the opponent is able to attack fifty times full speed, unchecked through midfield, no defense in the world can stop them every time
I remember noting this to someone after the SKC match, and I wonder about it again today. There have been matches where the Lampard-Pirlo-Iraola midfield have been really good and I think it is legitimately a bit part of the recent success. But, that doesn't mean that it has to always be one size fits all.
SKC was chalked up to exhaustion after a long week, and I'm sure that was a big part of it. However, it also felt like a lot of the same things happened today. That might be the right midfield in matches where we can control tempo and, towards that end, I'd probably run it out against Colorado this weekend (they are good, but generally cede possession and play defense).
However, we've now gotten torched in the midfield by two teams that play aggressively in midfield and who have midfielders who are good passers. That sort of match might be one where you need a guy like Bravo to really break play up and cause some havoc. Just something to watch as the season goes on.
A few other thoughts:
- About the only decent stuff that seemed to happen came down the left side between RJ and McNamara. It wasn't hugely productive other than TMac's two phenomenal strikes, but there was some decent play there at times that created a few possibilities, even with RJ playing on the wrong side. On the other hand, we got so little out of White-Harrison, all of which just make all the more clear to me that we would get a lot more out of Jack with a real FB behind him. I don't know what to even think of the fact that when RJ had to go off and the match was pretty much lost, we STILL didn't bring Martinez in to give him some minutes.
- I was sitting around the 30 yard line on the side we were attacking in the first half when Villa and Harrison kept getting whistled for offside. It is pretty much impossible to tell live for sure, but it seemed like they were largely getting the calls right. Maybe I'll stomach the replay at some point. I'm sure there were examples to the contrary and, of course, there was a ton of noise about referring before and after the match, but to this lay person's eye, the refereeing was, at best, the fifth or sixth most important factor in us getting well and thoroughly beaten. I don't care if PV talks about that publicly in order to distract or whatever, but I can't imagine he believes that was really the biggest issue.
- Interesting that Marsch started Grella on the right and Muyl on the left, which is contrary to how they usually play. I imagine some of it might have been wanting Muyl tracking back on Harrison since, by all accounts, he has a tremendous work rate. That made it very tough for Jack when combined with the lack of FB support as noted above.
- I've been somewhat harsh on Mix at times, but when recent trades and injuries have left you with Tony Taylor as the only quasi-offensive player on the bench, you have to dress Mix. You have to have some offensive depth given the weather and the fact that the RB are often a team that gets an early lead.
- Ultimately, the table is still in a good spot. Given that we were the team with two road games, the mini-round robin at the top of the east over the past two weeks came out okay. We need to protect home turf against Col and LA and should hope to get at least 4 out of 6 against CLB and Orl given they are not strong home teams. SJ is sort of a wildcard.
