Theres no chance we were outplayed. Toronto was maybe slightly better in the first half but we were the clear better team in the second half. I thought Dome made good decisions. Heber was supposedly only fit for 60 minutes so he brought him in at the 60th to go 120 and have him for possible pens. Everything looked like we were getting to extra time and im sure the last 2 subs would have been coming early in the ET. Once we gave up the second goal there was really no time left to make a sub without completely screwing ourselves. I thought his decisions and tactics were fine, just had an unfortunate result. It happens. Sucks, but it happens.

EDIT: However, I will add that i thought we shouldn't have payed as many long balls as we did and passes should have been more on the ground than in the air. Physically, Toronto players overpowered us and we werent really going to get many good chances from those.

this drove me mad the first half. but to be fair, no one was moving. forwards weren't checking back into space, midfield was not rotating out. everyone was just standing around. so long balls became the only option. even callens dribbling upfield multiple times for this reason alone.

we should have these patterns drilled into us by now to play out of the back... why we forgot everything last night is beyond me..

Ring also had a piss poor game so did Parks. I mean the whole team picked a great time to be awful, except for Sean John. Ok I can live with it I guess but here is the killer...

I have to disagree. I guess it is about our expectation level, but Ring was all but poor. During the entire first half he had to patch up after Parks, and there's only so much you can do. Several times he won the ball for NYC. In the second half he sent one badly wayward pass that flied over the by-line, but otherwise I cannot remember any real bad decisions by him. Of course we'd love to see the captain take the game by the scruff of the neck and score or assist a winner. He might have managed that without Mata's crazy hacking down the Toronto man.

The for the most part I agree with others that the ref was consistent but the way he chose to ref the game hurt us. He let TFC foul to stop every breakaway we had in the first half without giving out any cards to discourage it. He was letting our guys do the same but TFC is a super slow team not having to try to play with us on the break really crushed a number of chances in the first half.

I don't have any complaints with Dome's tactics but his subs or lack there of were horrible. Mata and ITS were gassed and should have been off well before the penalty but at the very least Mata should have been off for GMS the moment TFC converted the pen. He was completely gassed and mentally in shambles. We had 3-4 min the chase a goal, get him off the field.

There was one play in the second half that I want to go back and look at around the 59'. I don't want to go full tilt into an opinion on it yet, because my angle wasn't the best, and I haven't seen the replay, but...

Mitrita I thought was fouled from behind on a decent break-away (not in on goa per-se, but things were looking to lead to a decent chance), that I thought would result in a yellow card and if I'm remembering correctly, I thought the ref motioned advantage, but then the ball went forward and to the feet of one of our attackers in an offsides position. And instead of bringing the ball back to where the foul was committed and issuing a yellow, he awarded TFC a free kick for the offsides.

Does anyone remember this or have a better understanding of what happened here? I do want to rewatch before I decide to get upset about it (though I didn't have that patience last night at the game), but it seemed to me like it was a pretty egregious decision.

Yeah, it was BS - It was right in front of my section and it did not make sense how it was called. That linesman was bad all match and I was questioning numerous offsides calls that seemed like guessing since the linesman was not aligned with the last defender.

don't think he's talking bout that one? there was one where ref stopped play before we even went in on goal to bring the throw back, what seemed like 5 yards to me. it was a really shitty time to be picky about positioning of a throw, imho.

easy for us to point this out after the fact, but he had no idea in the moment. he just thought he needed to make sure there was no cross and he was hopelessly late.

I’m a little late to this as I couldn’t muster up the will to check the forums until now, but moogoo, you are essentially saying we can’t blame mata because he’s a bad defender. Good defenders don’t have “no idea in the moment” where they and their teammates are. Spatial awareness is probably the single most important skill a defender can have.

this is gonna be unpopular. But ever since whatever happened with chanot that kept him out all those games, he has not been a very good defender. Average to slightly above average at best.

Chanot is a good defender who made a physical mistake. Mata made a mistake because he’s not a good defender.
Lack of spatial awareness and inability to react quickly are two defining characteristics of a bad defender, not excuses that explain away why he isn’t.

As if Chanot hasn't been guilty of a bonehead challenge in the box that gave up a PK? come on. this season alone he's made plenty of mistakes that resulted in PKs or goals. We're just picking on Mata more cause his was at the end of the game. Chanot is a good defender.. but he makes plenty of mistakes. I"m not saying Mata is a great or even good defender either. I'm just saying mistakes happen and in a moment like that, i don't think it's fair to get a bird's eye view of the space and judge him based on that. Don't get me wrong, I'm still pissed he made the challenge because it simply would have been better to let it play out and hope we can defend any cross.

Chanot has committed errors, but on a percentage basis far fewer than Mata. Chanot is also often key to building from the back as he is better with the ball than most central defenders in MLS. Mata consistently loses opponents, and his "good" defensive plays are almost always using his speed to track the ball - after he lost assignment in the first place.

Left back has been a void since 2015. Sweat is a solid MLS substitute, but the team needs to find someone for next year. Anyone else from Malmo looking to move to New York?

I saw the same thing and have the same questions. I suppose that doesn't help but at least you know it's not something you completely made up. It was way on the other corner of the field from my seats, but it looked like our guy was fouled, face planted, the ref signaled advantage then a whistle blew very soon thereafter and offside was called.
