U.s. To Host 2016 Copa America

thats the thing...its still up in the air which star players will come or if the best teams will be called up.

neymar has said he wants to play in olympics, i dont think barcelona lets him play two tournaments.

james has alluded to the same although that depends on wether they beat the USA.

chicharito/ tecatito/ layun/ and i think talavera have all expressed their desire to play in the olympics

sanchez may be held back by arsenal for "rest" be wenger, plus read a while back chile and ecuador were thinking of taking reserve/ U-23 teams

so if it ends up being a reserve/ not all starters being there then it becomes a meh tournament.
Although the clubs play the salaries, typically national Team requests take precedence in the pecking order for call ups. Not the clubs. The players can always say they don't what to play in this or that, but that's when they "fall out of favor".

eh it depends....national teams havent called up certain players because club managers tell their FA not to call them for X reason.

but for sure they wont let a player play two tournaments....also depends if the club wants him back in time for europa. champions league qualifiers etc.

i remember hernandez wanted to play london olympics but ferguson and Man U "convinced" him to not take part of it.

again, it will be case by case and in the coming months well see more which players will be called and also which national teams will bring their A teams.

All those guys are over 23, those teams plan on playing them with the U-23s?

I thought I recently heard that both Neymar and Messi were confirmed for Copa America

for olympics? a team can bring three overage players.

Yeah, I know that. But would the other countries play guys like Neymar, James, etc. with their U-23s?

I figured teams would more likely play those guys with the rest of the national team, the ones they will play with more often, than the U-23s.

its the olympics dude....especially for neymar he wants to be in brazil winning that gold medal that he failed to win four years ago....it dont matter who the other U-23's are.

a gold medal still seems to have prestige for soccer.

EDIT: oh and brazil has never won it either. so thats more incentive

I get that for Neymar, makes sense. But I was always under the impression that the Olympics weren't paid a whole ton of attention for soccer.

I do think I remember on the broadcast for the last USMNT game against Canada, that they mentioned Neymar was confirmed, but I can't seem to find that exactly on google at the moment.

you may be right...i havent looked into it for about a month or so....id say its still being taken seriously at least in latin america...i remember messi pissed off barcelona by saying screw you im going to the olympics in 2008

I would certainly hope that something of this sort doesn't end up happening. That would be a disaster.

Messi will be playing in the Copa America Tournament.

This is a FIFA-sanctioned tournament -- logic need not apply.

Doesn't change that it's a money making tournament....Fifa sanction doesn't guarantee star players and also doesn't change fact that conmebol wanted to get in that $$

They could of easily delayed last years tourney to this year and make it its centennial tournament in South America

but hey I got tickets to two games to ill go wether its first teams or u-23's/reserves so guess I am guilty as well :D

Aside from getting the group of death for the USMNT, we're all stuck with Hati v Ecuador if you bought the Met Life Stadium pass. Worst. Draw. Ever. :/

It's only the group of death because the usmnt is mediocre. It's a shame that this team is at this level. I don't know whose fault it is, but JK isn't helping. The US should be handling teams like Costa Rica at this point.

The last time the US lost to Costa Rica at home in a FIFA competition was in 1985 during World Cup qualifying. That's 12 wins and 3 draws.

If we can't beat CR and Paraguay at home, JK has to go.

We lost this fall at Red Bull arena in a friendly 1-0. Then again, we didn't have the full squad. No Morris. No Wood.

Chances we see USA v Brazil in the quarters is very likely. I see Colombia wining the group and us scraping by.

That would be epic and selfishly, as i have tickets to that qtr final, i wouldn't mind it happening !!

Just need to get tickets to that usa v paraguay game in philly without having to buy a venue pass.
