USMNT Talk

I didn't see the game. What was the context of that comment?
He scored the winner at 118.

LET'S FUCKING GO WHAT A VICTORY!!!! savor this moment for a long time. I think this is the turning point for our federation, for US soccer, and it's going to be amazing!

I was (happily) shocked at how well Robinson played this tournament. I'm not sure if it is a blip in his play or (hopefully) his coming out party.

He's a good defender in league play, but he was another level this month. Hopefully he keeps it up and is out of the East next season!

I've always thought he is a great CB. He's just young but he's improving year over year. He's definitely going to be going to europe soon. I'm sad our boy Sands didn't get to show off in his best position though. He's just not as good in a back 4.

can't wait to read all the mexican fan's excuses :) "the field was too small!"

He was great in this tournament.

Beating the coach who drafted him and then didn’t play him.

So the Azzurri and US were just playing the long game in 2018.

Couldn't be happier for Berhalter. I get that people wanted, oh, Martino or someone on that level. But the derision has been nasty and it seemed to border on people rooting for him to fail.

Sands started the play that won the free kick that won the game. It wasn't his most impressive pass (and Busio gets the credit for unlocking the field with his pass to Gioacchini), but he saw the best option and took it. And yeah, he has not looked as good since Zimmerman went down and he had to play in a back 4, which favored Robinson. But GreeegGgG is smart enough to know what he has and I'm confident we'll see James in the Octagon with all the schedule congestion.

Also Martino is great and the Mexican federation would be foolish to fire him before this cycle ends.

Remember 2017?
I threw my phone that night and it broke. Last night, I pulled my phone out of the charger in excitement after the goal, breaking the charging port.
This program has come full circle!

I don't like that I can't tell if he's intentionally trying to be provocative or just says and thinks stupid things. I can respect either of those two states of being, but I reject the uncertainty.
He plays a role, which does sometimes lead him to say things that you wonder if he believes, and I respect not liking that. But there are people who just hate and abuse him. It's mostly on Twitter, and yes, I know it's Twitter, but other soccer announcers and personalities don't get that abuse. And despite the ambiguous hot takes, it is clear that:
  • he loves soccer
  • he loves US soccer, which means
    • he loves the US teams
    • he loves MLS
  • and he got himself certified to volunteer to ref youth and amateur leagues
So though I get you not appreciating his performative trolling, but there's a level of disgust other people have for him that's weird.

I've found it interesting how reluctant Mo was to say anything even moderately negative about a specific player. I think Alexi directs his criticism in an intentionally productive direction. I think he believes that players will take a negative hot take and use it as fuel.
We don't have an intense soccer media landscape. Lalas has a role and I think he cherishes it.

I didn't express myself well -- I can appreciate performative trolling (like Craig Burley) and I am ok with someone being a dumbass (most other commentators). I am uncomfortable when I can't tell which it is -- sometimes I think he's trolling, sometimes I think he's a few cards short of a full deck.

His most consistent take is “ show me, and prove it, in big international games.” Score goals, make tackles, win second balls.
But he also tends to get protective of certain people when he thinks the US soccer fandom is over the top unfair, eg lately with Zardes and Berhalter.
I think, but cannot really prove that a good measure of the extreme hatred is driven by that side of him. Some people get angry when Mr. Critical won’t validate their personal negativity. But that’s it- Lalas is usually critical and not negative.

Interesting news today.

Miazga transfers to Alavez and is now playing in a Top 5 league (La Liga).

Owen Otasowie - who got some limited EPL time with Wolverhampton a couple years back is transferring to Club Brugge in order to get playing time.

Meanwhile, Christian Pulisic has tested positive for you know what. He's vaccinated and doing fine, but obviously out this weekend for Chelsea and may have to miss some of next weekend's World Cup Qualifiers.
