USMNT Talk

Thanks. I noticed the difference in the anthems but was not sure whether it had to do with mike placement or volume adjustment. How did te size of the US and Wales crowds compare, if you have a sense of that?
There were more USMNT fans in total but Wales were all wearing the same red kit and it looked like a wall.

Added bonus for Wales that their red kits also matched all the empty red seats you could see every time the TV panned the crowd.

Sounds like the USMNT and GGG are due to start contract talks. I'm not a Berhalter hater, but anytime we have retained a coach in the past 20ish years, it hasn't gone well for us. Arena after 2002, Bradley after 2010, Kinsmann after 2014...

Anyone have a compelling argument on why we should keep him?

This is what I talked about. Combine the confederations and cut out the Caribbean. They get our N American $, we get S American talent.

[Berhalter}: An example I can give you: In this last World Cup, we had a player that was clearly not meeting expectations on and off the field. One of 26 players, so it stood out. As a staff, we sat together for hours deliberating what we were going to do with this player. We were ready to book a plane ticket home, that's how extreme it was. And what it came down to was, we're going to have one more conversation with him, and part of the conversation was how we're going to behave from here out. There aren’t going to be any more infractions.

But the other thing we said to him was, you're going to have to apologize to the group, but it's going to have to say why you’re apologizing. It's going to have to go deeper than just ‘Guys, I'm sorry.’ And I prepped the leadership group with this. I said, ‘Okay, this guy's going to apologize to you as a group, to the whole team.’ And what was fantastic in this whole thing is that after he apologized, they stood up one by one and said, ‘Listen, it hasn’t been good enough, You haven’t been meeting our expectations of a teammate and we want to see change.’ They really took ownership of that process. And from that day on there were no issues with this player.

Lots of speculation it's Gio Reyna but really we don't know. Some also suggesting Roldan. Also seeing suggestions that the fuller story is going to come out and Berhalter is trying to get in front of it.

Tom Bogert is reporting it was Gio Reyna.

If you look at his replies, he confirms he has sources telling him that.

I am so thankful the nation didn't know about my attitude when I was 20.

I like the way that Gregg handled it (of course, this is just one side of the story). Hopefully a lesson learned and a chance to grow as a person and player.

On the one side, you're right -- we've all made mistakes at that age.

On the other side, he has a team full of players his age or slightly older who are acting the right way and who he should be emulating.

there has to be more to the story. I get not being a pro and not giving it all in practice and it that is not good behavior. but is that enough to split the team like that? he had to have said something to team mates or something for them to be split like that.

So Wynalda was right that there was a rift between Berhalter and Reyna but got causation and blame exactly backwards, plus he made up some myth that GGG told Reyna to lie about his injuries..

Also, Claudio must be mortified.

What a mess.

So shortly after Reyna’s agent releases a statement that there’s more to the story but not denying any facts that were mentioned including the vote Twellman say he spoke to 3 other player agents who deny there was a vote.

Separately, the account of Berhalter’s remarks about the situation come from a leadership summit he attended last week. Multiple outlets report that Berhalter claims he was told that everything at the event was confidential and off the record. But the organizers published a summary of his remarks on their own, hours before the Athletic article was coming out. Miscommunication? is Gregg lying? Did the organizers do him dirty? What a dumpster fire.

ETA: Twellman's first line is a reference to being accused that he is doing PR work for Berhalter and US Soccer. Because the Berhalter-Out faction has decided that
  • there was a vote
  • having a vote is itself a scandal
  • which proves Gregg is unfit to lead
  • the vote split shows he lost half the locker room, and
  • the players who voted for Gio to leave were all MLS players and players who competed with Gio for minutes
  • and therefore by claiming there was no vote TT is acting as house scribe for USS
The Berhalter-In faction has decided that
  • there was a vote
  • which was good leadership because
  • involving the players by making Reyna apologize to them forced Reyna to realize this was not just between him and the coach
  • and the vote forced everyone in the locker room to take ownership of team cohesion
Oddly, the one thing they both agree on is there was a vote.
Me? I wasn't there, and there are so many conflicting stories right now I'm reserving judgment.
