USMNT Talk

I'm curious who you would have selected instead.... I see a solid starting 11 and key subs if needed
Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids), William Yarbrough (Leon FC)

Defenders: Matt Besler (Sporting KC), Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Monchengladbach), Omar Gonzalez (Club Pachuca) DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders/forwards: Sacha Kljestan (NY Red Bulls),Alejandro Bedoya (FC Nantes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Jermaine Jones (Colorado Rapids), Perry Kitchen, Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders), Bobby Wood (Hamburg SV), Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy), Julian Green

I cannot stand the fact that there is little consistency amongst the team selections for the different tournaments. How can we expect the team to preform better if they are constantly playing with a different set of teammates every time there's a game/tournament. Until the team gets a consistent starting 11 we cannot expect any results from tournaments.

Can someone explain why Klinsman left Omar Gonzalez off of the Copa America Roster? He's been fantastic for Pachuca this year. Helped them all the way to the Liga MX finals this season.

I'll be curious to see if the friendly against Ecuador tomorrow will feature a lineup more like that which will actually be featured in the Copa, or if it will be another excuse to give runouts to a bunch of future prospects like the match against Puerto Rico a couple of days ago.

Looking at this, it appears there isn't too much defensive depth. Fabian Johnson has done very well for Mönchengladbach as a left middie all year. Maybe it was just the source that put him there?? Roster has a large gathering of CB's and not too much on the outside aside from Chandler and Yedlin. (Maybe Bedoya too)

Unless I've missed some more players swapping positions, I feel it may be another Jürgen "playing everyone out of position because I'm actaully a U15 coach than a head coach."

Agreed. Cameron can play RB if needed, but obviously much, much better in the center. I would have expected Tim Ream to be included on the roster leaving off Orozco. No need for 5 CBs on the roster.

I would have added Ream and Gonzalez for Kitchen and Orozco. Gonzalez is playing really well, and Orozco has done nothing but disappoint. Ream can play left back. Adding these guys gives us the flexibility to move Cameron or Fabian up to midfield, so we can drop Kitchen.

I would have Morris instead of Zardes.

I would consider another fullback for Chandler.

I just don't have the most in depth knowledge of who's available for the USA to play defense. Otherwise, I would have made some changes with it to craft my ideal lineup.

However, I do agree with your points. The team doesn't have any outside defenders and it's gonna bite them in butt come Copa time.

This is a pathetic showing for a national team game. The stadium is incredibly small and the USMNT isn't even a big enough draw to fill it up. It shouldn't matter that this is just a friendly.

What a breathe of fresh air that 2nd half was against Ecuador -- Nagbe and Bradley combined very well in midfield and Pulisic was terrific. He's such a confident kid and he put in a great shift against some physical play from the Ecuador defender on that side (can't recall his name). Besides obviously scoring the winner, Nagbe completed all of his passes and a lot of them were good balls in dangerous spots. Hope we see Pulisic, Nagbe and Wood from the start going forward.

Agreeing with Paul here. While Ecuador certainly backed off in the second half, it was telling to me that our best gameplay of the night came when our lineup on the field was mostly young players anchored by a few key vets (Bradley, specifically).

The idle thought I had was that the majority of the vets are too stuck in the past regarding how the USMNT plays. But you get Yedlin, Nagbe, Wood, Pulisic, Bedoya, etc., out there, and they're hungry to win and make their names. Dropping Bradley into the DLP role with Nagbe linking up to the forwards was golden a golden combo.

I'm really hoping Klinsmann learned tonight that our Copa squad has got to lean more heavily toward our youth, with key veterans holding down a couple of roles.

Hopefully, Klinsmann takes a lot from that 2nd half. We need Nagbe and Pulisic to start. We need Bradley to play deeper.

I like Wood, and he did great on the assist for the game winner, but he did fail to exploit a couple of long balls with a first touch that should have been better.

Yedlin's move to get free down the right side on the goal sequence was sick.

Dempsey
Pulisic - Nagbe - Bedoya
Bradley - Jones
FabJo - Brooks - Cameron - Yedlin

Echoing here, but Pulisic really, really impressed me. He had some great runs down the left and sent in some dangerous crosses. But what impressed me most was handling that physical play late after we had scored.

The Ecuadorian defender was much bigger and stronger, and I thought to myself, Pulisic is just going to get muscled off the ball (which I really wouldn't have blamed him for, he's freaking 17 years old). And he kind of initially did get muscled off, but he used his body very well to shield him off and then worked around him technically. Honestly, this little play to control the ball reminded me a lot of what we see Villa do in handling some of the larger CBs in MLS.

Thought Yedlin looked fantastic defensively. Fabian did decent, though I didn't think he had a ton of chances to get forward. That pass Bobby Wood had into the box to Dempsey was great.

I like this formation, but I'm not certain on Dempsey playing as a lone striker up top. And would like to get Bobby Wood in there somewhere. But admittedly, I'm not sure how to do it myself.

Also, Zusi out please. I'm not completely sold on Bedoya yet, but he's definitely an upgrade over Zusi.

I think that back 4 is nailed down. Birnbaum did some nice things last night (and had a few mistakes) against a talented team, glad to see him perform like that at the international level against some good talent. But I do think Cameron steps in there for him once he's fully healthy.
