USMNT Talk

So I was browsing ESPN.com earlier today and came across a "Copa America Fan Guide" on there that I hadn't seen before. I don't really put much weight into soccer coverage that that site has, but it was still something else to read, so I started to browse through.

I would suggest that ESPN.com actually get people to write these "fan guides" that actually somewhat follow the USMNT and the sport.

The predicted lineup they have is a 4-4-2, which based after our friendlies, looks like it is more likely to be a 4-3-3, but I'll give that a pass.

Who does the starting lineup contain? Well, Tim Ream (he who is not on the Copa roster) is manning LB and Jozy (he who is injured) is taking one of the striker positions.

Oh, and Jozy is also listed as the "Key Player" for the USA.

Now this may have been written a while ago, but you would hope that they would update it as the roster was finalized.

Brutal

Pretty sure ESPN FC is written by Brits mostly.

Thus why the American line-up features only players they've seen in England in recent years.

Seeing a lot of frustration with result last night. I thought we played as well as we could against one of the best teams in the world. I liked the attacking style, but we really had a very small chance of winning anyway. The next two games are the ones we need to focus on.

Related to nycfc, I thought our forwards did not press enough last night and you could see how important that is in the 433.

It's frustrating because of HOW we lost . Columbia didn't particularly look like one of the best teams in the world last night and we still lost because of one poorly defended set piece and a borderline PK call. We looked good for stretches but came out flat to start the second half When you'd expect to be fired up to get a goal back .

I think that's just what it looks like when you play a far superior team. They make you look flat and if we had scored they would have played harder. All the top teams conserve energy early in a tournament

How do you root for mataritta and against Costa Rica at the same time?

Mata scores a hat trick and the Ticos lose 4-3

Not good for our goal differential. I'm actually thinking maybe he should look bad this tournament so we have a chance to keep him.

Waston red card helped us. They also have valverde and Matarrita on yellows (2 yellows = suspension) who will have to be careful. Let's hope we can take advantage. Because we're bottom of the group right now.

Bottom of the group, but with that draw we now control our destiny.

I know I'm looking ahead but Ecuador got screwed last night. Too bad as I would like to see them win group B over Brazil.

I'm not completely certain that that set piece was "poorly" defended. I think Cameron was a little slow reacting to the run that was made, but that goal was moreso a well drawn up and well executed play.

Holy hell that Mexico game... Mexico is looking like the best team in the tournament right now. With Suarez, Neymar, and Messi (probably) out for now, Mexico have a real shot at this. They kept Cavani relatively contained, and their high press and general energy is really freakin fun to watch. And the fans... are nuts. As much hostility as I feel when it comes to USA v. MEX, I can't help but feel happy for them. In the pregame Lalas said something like Mexico could actually surpass USA. I want what he's smoking... we're not even on the same planet right now.

Edit: it was definitely a shit show of a game, with 2 reds and a handful of yellows, but they are showing the fight that we aren't. Cobi Jones did an interview with KickTV before Copa started where he said just that - we don't look like we have that fight in us that we did back in his day.

I will never root for Mexico, but I do feel the US success over the last 2 decades has awoken a sleeping giant. Mexico is pissed, and they are producing some great talent and playing some quality matches over the last few years. They want to be #1 in the region and until the US beats them (and consistently again), they are.

Uruguay is not colombia, I am reserving judgement until i see how we play against CR and Paraguay. Everyone seems to be discounting that we looked somewhat like we belonged against possibly the #1 team in the tournament.

Uruguay is also not Chile, but tell that to the PA guy who played the national anthems yesterday!
