USMNT Talk

I'm no Zardes fan, but he absolutely makes effective runs. Its one of his few good qualities. The unfortunate part is his first touch is Khiry-bad and he is dis-possessed often.

Shelton's first touch and general technical ability is way above that of Zardes. Which goes a long way towards showing how those qualities are often over rated.

Sure, but while Khiry is completely confused when arriving at the box, Zardes has a good idea and makes the right pass (usually). It's just that Zardes is not as strong on the ball and his first touch is definitely as bad or even much worse. Lesser of two evils.

Zardes is a much better player than Shelton despite the fact that his first touch and ball skills in general are worse.
I'll have to disagree on that one. Zardes is better ,but I'd say they have equally awful touch and ball skills.

Khiry has a much better first touch, probably has better ball skills, but isn't yet as good a finisher or overall player as Zardes. Both players are young (22 and 24) and will improve, but my bet is that Khiry will improve more. He is younger and even farther back in development, and my gut tells me he will be the better player.

Zardes has had some good moments, but I thought he played particularly poorly in the last game. Not just his heavy touch, but his positioning and judgment were sub par. There were even a couple of moments on defense that were bad, including one where he failed to mark a runner near the box who was then put through on goal.

It's worth remembering that Zardes is probably 5th in the USA's heirarchy of forwards. He's only on the field because Altidore and Johannsson are hurt - if either of those guys were healthy, Zardes might not even be on the team. Zardes has also been starting because we are playing a 4-3-3, so we need 3 forwards and his speed makes it easier for him to play the wing, where a guy like Wondo can't really play. Frankly, I would put Zusi in at wing for the next game.

Big Apple Jack is likely watching our national team's wing play compared to England's and must be thumbing through his calendar marking out important threshold dates geared towards the citizenship process. Fastest way is probably to marry an American - think he's ready at 19? Or having been living here as a minor for so many years, is he somehow eligible through that route? Any Immigration Lawyers on the forums?

I'd like to agree with you on this last paragraph (and in my personal opinion, thats where he stands), but I'm not certain that's how Klinnsman sees it. It seems that he somehow tries to find a way to get Zardes in the game, no matter who is available. He's played winger, midfield, and striker.

I think you need to have been a resident and green card holder for 5 years to gain citizenship. That reduces to 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen and have been married for 3 years. So, Poku could probably apply (or is close). Big Apple Jack, not so much.

Well, he came to the states at age 14 and he's now 19, so he should be eligible for the green card sometime this year. Then I guess the 5 year countdown begins from green card to citizenship.... Unless of course RockShrimp wants to do the Forums a solid and find herself a highly skilled, & younger, British accent to tie the knot with - thus lowering the wait to 3 years?.?.?

It's 2016. No reason you couldn't do us the same solid.

It blows my mind that he's playing Zardes in the position and not Fabian Johnson. Johnson would be so much better in that role than Zardes.

Jurgen showed up for the NB4.

USMNT was gifted first place in group A following Costa Rica's 3-2 victory over Colombia!

Matarita was on fire tonight for the Ticos. Wonder what went wrong for Costa Rica in the rest of the group games.

Looks like all you guys who bought tickets to see a USA v Brazil quarterfinal in New Jersey are out of luck.

Losing the US game at MetLife will suck for those looking forward to seeing the MNT, but if they want to sell the ticket, a Brazil/Columbia matchup will probably be a huge item in the tri-state area. That could be a very valuable ticket to sell.

Hopefully Brazil doesn't lay a goose egg tomorrow by losing to Chile and taking the 2nd spot - if that happened, not only would MetLife lose out on the MNT, but a Columbia/Chile match would not be as valuable on the secondary market.

I bought tickets to see quality soccer. As much as much as love the usmnt, I would be just as happy with Brazil vs Columbia.
