USMNT Talk

With JK now out, USSoccer is likely to go with a caretaker to get us through qualifying, most likely Bruce Arena. He's no lock for the permanent position unless LA & USSoccer allow him to keep both roles, which is highly doubtful - I think he's going to take his third stint at the helm simply out of loyalty to the program and getting them to the WC.

Why would he leave a well-paid job with the Galaxy if the job doesn't get him a chance to go to the World Cup? Also, when was his second stint with the team? I only recall one.

Nagbe now looks like he could be captain. Took balls not to play, he must have seen the revolt bubbling in the locker room and didn't want any part of it. Now he's proven right and took the big stand for the players that also felt the ship was being steered in the wrong direction but we're afraid to sacrifice their MNT careers to make a stand.

How about this lineup next match?

Green - wood - pulisic
Benny - bedoya - Nagbe
Fabian - Cameron - brooks - yedlin
Guzan

PS, I could see little finger instead of benny. But I wanted to put him in there because he hasn't had a chance in years. Also LD as super sub.

I love Benny, but he isn't half the player Littlefinger is.

Just remember a World Cup has never been won by a country with a coach from a different country.

Sorry, misnomer on my part - meant he had two stints leading the team to the WC.

And I never said he was leaving the Galaxy - my point being he's likely coming in as a caretaker/trauma coach to get the team back on track while keeping his job with LA. The only way he gets the permanent job is if both LA & the USMNT allow him to hold both positions simultaneously, otherwise I cannot see him staying on with the MNT as a club position offers far more longevity. But who knows, maybe he has the ego to want to coach a third WC and he'll figure out his next move club-wise afterwards???

He is 65. A shot at the world cup could be more valuable to him than a couple more shots at MLS Cups.

There may be times when I have lost respect for my boss, but I don't ever torpedo the project I'm working on - rather I continue to give the best I can out of self-pride.
This isn't so cut and dry.

DYK that you make better decisions after breakfast than before lunch?
DYK that 20 year old women and their fathers/brothers have fewer and shorter phone calls during their peak fertility days of the month?
DYK that there is a strong correlation between daylight saving time and lower SAT scores?

Actor/observer bias is the natural tendency to attribute others' poor actions to intentional and/or personal character traits while attributing one's own poor actions to external circumstances.

Your comment describes yourself as working to "your best" no matter what while the players clearly intentionally and unprofessionally tanked the game.

Isn't it possible that the players did "their best" but the circumstances of their coaching brought down what "their best" was going to be?

Anything is possible, and I gave the caveat that it was the eye test.

But my point was that if the locker room was lost as early as suggested, then there was no way everybody was giving max effort. One case in point, Mata routinely gets exposed as a defender by MLS caliber players taking him on 1v1 (not team tactics) and he was a rock vs a collectively superior group of players (compared to MLS). Or getting thrashed 4-0.

BTW, all of those examples you gave go both ways for the ticos and the yanks.

The team didn't need Donovan there - his presence alone in the locker room very likely would have been caustic as he and Dempsey did not get along and it was Dempsey's team that Cup - the team over-achieved and bought into JK's voodoo tactics and it wouldn't have with a shitty voice in the LR second guessing everything.

Wondo is just a massive choke artist, and while he makes tons of shots that you wouldn't expect, he also misses the ones he should be counted on to make. That miss was supremely unfortunate as it was one of the best trick-free kicks I've ever seen. 9 out of 10 times we score it, but unfortunately this 1 out of 10 time we asked Wondo to take the shot rather than Green or somebody else.

Donovan has his issues, but being a locker room problem is not one of them. For all his faults, he is a class guy, and the notion that he would be a cancer on the team is preposterous.

As for the Wondo miss, it was not the set piece you're remembering. It was at the end of regulation when he skied a ball over the post from so close to the net you'd think the laws of physics wouldn't allow it. Classic Wondo. He is one of the very best at putting himself in a position to score. Nobody is better at finding a way to receive the ball in a dangerous spot. Sadly, his finishing is poor, so he often misses the sitters he creates for himself.

The set piece was at the end of stoppage time. Dempsey took a slightly heavy touch when the ball was played to him and that gave the goalkeeper room to make the save.

Regarding Klinsmann, he's been at the helm for 5 years, and the senior team is no better, and perhaps a bit worse, than when he arrived. He has not had as good a run in any tournament as Bradley had at the 2009 Confed Cup, and his performance at the 2015 Gold Cup and to start this qualifying round were worse than Bradley's lows.

It was time for a change. Perhaps overdue.

Please elaborate
The soccer writers will all love this because they clamor for the days gone by when they were part an exclusive club, soccer fans in the USA. Bruce did a great job, but last coached the nat'l team in 2006, more than 10 years ago. What does he know about the current pool that any MLS manager doesn't know? What does he know about the way international tactics have changed or about the intl teams themselves? He's been enjoying his time as the king of MLS, crushing the rest of league with superior talent and league rules changed to benefit his team.

Was this firing wholly determined by a 4-0 loss to CR? Or was it the culmination of a string of disappointing results (semifinals in Copa America?) We totally screw ourselves by changing midstream, and the thought that Bruce Arena is some kind of soccer genius that will save US soccer is hilarious. Why didn't they hire him 6 years ago then, Why did they get rid of him for Bob Bradley. Bob Bradley has been shown to be a great coach with other teams, why did everyone hate him as US coach? Its because the players aren't good enough to go toe to toe with the best teams in the world.

I predict we will be worse off and the players and Bruce Arena will be exposed. I'll root like I always do for the team, but acting like this is some positive step forward is ridiculous. This is a major concession to the mob of soccer writers who won't leave sunil alone until they get their idol back. The sooner those guys retire and stop hive minding all soccer coverage in the US the better.
