World Cup 2022

With their final Group came imminent, and a must win situation, how do people feel about the somewhat ongoing debate about whether CONCACAF solidarity means we should root for Mexico in the WC as long as they aren't playing us? I don't hate them in neutral situations in the WC, but I can't find a reason to root for them either. Honestly, I have little rooting interest for or against except for the USA. If Poland wins I'm like, "that's nice" but I don't really care. Outside of right now, I've always liked the Dutch for their history in the game and cheerful fans. There's a couple of teams I don't like, though not for meaningful reasons. Mostly I just root for underdogs and end up disappointed.
I’m not about it only because I know they wouldn’t root for us. I see it as a rivalry.

I’ll enter the 2nd chance one and see if I notice anything I may have missed.

I’m one of the 0’s. Which is odd because I did a bracket and joined the league. Not sure how they accept my final score prediction and all but then I don’t get entered.
Could be that I missed a step but I don’t recall it being complicated.

when you look at your entries, do you have points calculated that just aren't showing up in the league?

I am somehow first. did my bracket in about 2 minutes based on whatever knowledge I had at the time, emotional choices, and why not? choices.

Thx. When you click on "Points Explained" on the page with your score you get the shortened version I quoted.

We played out assess off in our final qualifying game and got them in back in 2014. Even tho it didn’t matter to us and we could have just sat back and watched them implode. They were in the same situation in 2018 (actually diff bc now they owed us some help from the previous cycle) and just sat back and let us not qualify. Before 2018 it was a rivalry, but at least root for our federation. Now it’s just plain fuck them.

I'm with you on that -- I want Mexico eliminated because screw them. But it is appetizing to have the potential to face them in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. Imagine beating Mexico in a World Cup knockout game.

Gotta get past Netherlands first, but boy ... that would be incredible.

EDIT: I forgot it's the 1st place team in this group, so Netherlands-USA winner gets Argentina vs Australia, not Mexico. So yes -- screw Mexico. I hope they miss out because of too many yellow cards. That would be chef's kiss perfect.

I kind of lean this way myself, now that you reminded me.

MexiGONE!

It really would have been sweet had they gone out on the fair play tiebreaker, though.

VAR gave Argentina a BS penalty according to everyone but it turned into a ball don't lie moment. Had Messi scored the PK, Mexico ties Poland on GD.
Saudi scored a late goal that was meaningless to them at the death, because they played even though it almost certainly could not have made a difference for them. Had they not done so, Mexico ties Poland on GD.
If Mexico ties Poland on GD, they also tie on Goals scored and H2H, which then puts it in to Fair Play. Do you know how that would have gone?

Fair play was in Poland’s favor according to ARG-POL announcers. They kept talking about it.

guess that means mexican fans will be calling for tata's head now since they've been threatening it for awhile already.

definitely the worst mexican team in the world cup i've ever seen. they didn't deserve to move on. maybe they should have brought chicharito after all. he would have at least given them a target man, which they were sorely missing.

That was the most insane matchday i think i've ever watched in any competition on any continent ever. Just absolute madness.
From the argentina clearly-not-a-penalty pen, to mexico's two offside goals, to mexico's best free kick i've ever seen, to argentina's sitter misses... Just everything was amazing.

And mexico didn't go through, which means they've technically broken the r16 curse? in the wrong way?

Until we beat Mexico twice last year, Tata was the coach most commonly held up by GGG haters as the coach the US should have hired.
Since last year, Herdman has been the preferred option.
I realize the differences in rosters, but. Oops.
Really, the USMNT fanbase is completely insane. Take NYCFC fans as a contrast. Many of us wanted first Torrent, then Deila, then Cushing fired. But then they did well and almost everyone changed their minds. Berhalter has:

Played and developed the kids.
Beaten Mexico in tournaments. Twice.
Qualified for the WC.
Advanced past group.
Helped us develop an attractive style of play.

And both Twitter and Reddit are still slamming the guy. There's an insane and widespread conspiracy about some sort of feud between Berhalter and Claudio Reyna's son.

Berhalter and Claudio Reyna played in high school and on the USMNT together and have always been friends. And suddenly there's some sort of problem, and Claudio is just sitting there in Qatar doing nothing while his son languishes on the bench? Or is Claudio sane and realize his son started just 15 games in all competitions over the lat 1.5 years, has ongoing injuries that never seem to heal, and almost certainly has fitness issues at a minimum.

I read a lengthy exchange in which one side argued that we should be playing on the level of Spain. WTF? People are even mad because we have a good style of play and insist we should concede possession and smash and grab; but then they also get pissed when we pull back even a little after getting a lead.

We're not the best team. We have a clear gaping hole at forward. But we've done well so far. This is a decide to be happy or decide to be mad situation.

We've done well, but I don't agree at all that our style of play is attractive by any means. I haven't watched a single US game in the past few years where I've not turned away to do something else during the game and I only flick back if Jon Champion or John Strong start raising their voices.

I don't slam berhalter because he doesn't choose Reyna. I slam Berhalter because he hasn't had any way of motivating the players, it almost seems like his choice of player sometimes is very bad, and we barely got through a qualifying campaign where we should have been comfortable. I'm not sayign we should be spain or brazil... But with the players the USMNT has to offer, we have to be doing better than what we've been doing.

I will say, this world cup so far has been good, but the forward situation has been awful. Can you blame that on berhalter? not really...

Our biggest issue is decision-making in the final third. That's not on the coach, that's on the players not being good enough.

Our biggest strength is in team defending. That is on the players and the coach - the players for being good enough defensively, and the coach for setting them up the right way.

I have an issue with Berhalter's in-game decision-making when it comes to tactics changes and subs, but he's done the job through the group stage. He's obviously not getting fired after this, nor should he. But I will be disappointed if we don't at least give a good showing against Netherlands. I'm not expecting a win, but I am expecting a good game and performance.

So as all luck and weird timing would have it, I'm going to be in the netherlands on saturday night watching USA vs Netherlands, in a bar, surrounded by Dutch people.

How this happens, when I booked the trip like four months ago? I don't know. But it's happening, and I cannot wait for probably the weirdest experience ever! lol
