World Cup 2022

that was both frustrating and awesome at the same time. How the f we didn't put that away earlier, idk. We had almost no good chances the whole game, that could have easily ended 0-0. Second half was awful.

We have this habit of just not playing after going up a goal. Idk what's up with that, but it's gotta end.

Soccer. Fucking hell.

Why did we have to make that so stressful? Iran had 0 shots in the first half -- just keep doing what we're doing and get a 2nd goal. Why are we bunkering for 45 .... 54 minutes? It cost us two points against Wales, and almost cost us two more points against Iran. Terrible tactics. The subs made no sense, either.

We are better than bunkering for so long. The good news is that we defend really well, so if we can defend like that against the Dutch, we have a chance to pull the upset.

injuries didn't help.

the subs didn't help.

wtf does shaq moore get in before scally?

zimmerman, I can understand. but shaq moore? haji wright is also useless.

I’m still flying off the sheer grit and composure of Adams, Sargent, Musa, Jedi, Weston, Dest, Ream, Zim, and above all, Puli. It’s saying something when Aaronson isn’t your most tenacious player.

With that said, I hated the bunker at 80. Right now we could go to the final and I would still want GGG to quit after this cycle. And “single worst midfield giveaway I have ever seen Moore” and Acosta are such a sharp dropoff from Dest and Weston that the MLS haters will be more empowered than Proud Boys at a Trump rally.

None of which takes away from the fact that I literally sobbed when I saw fellow Dutchess County native Tyler in closeup after the whistle, and I am extremely proud of our boys. (As opposed to Proud Boys).

Just hope Puli and Sargent and Weston are gonna be OK. That was the kind of sheer will that the USMNTs of the 90s used to show.

How do you do the same thing when the opponent changes?
In the first half Iran gave us all the possession and Iran barely tried to create chances even on counters. So we took the possession they gave us and attacked attacked attacked.
In the second half, needing a goal, Iran stopped giving us possession and fought. So how exactly do we just keep doing what we had been doing and if we did, why would we expect to get similar results? The other team has the opportunity to affect the game state just as much as we do.
Also, we did not bunker until the last 15 minutes when our guys were largely dead on their feet. We had most of the possession for the first 30 minutes of the second half. When we did bunker, the possession numbers really switched. But it wasn't that long.

Also not sure why GGG hates Gio, I can’t wait till he’s no longer the USMNT manager. Wish it could be tomorrow, because this team has the talent to make some noise if you let the best players play. I’d rather go down in a beautiful swan dive turned belly flop at the last minute than just tuck up and cannonball away like a fat kid in the public pool in the summer of 65.

Why do you assume he's healthy and fit? He's only played 60 minutes 6 times in the last 3 months. Wynalda beclowned himself claiming Gio is healthy and even he walked it back, because maintaining that rumor was beyond even his standards.

Can the USA stop taking years off my life every time they play?

Happy that we are through and have reached the knockouts. That was the goal I set for this squad. Hopefully, Pulisic gets back to fitness by Saturday. Haji Wright and Shaq Moore should not see the pitch again. They were both horrible.

The Dutch have not been impressive, and we could pose them problems if we are physical with them. We have to be crisper with our passing. I keep seeing opportunities that we are to slow to pounce on.

Actually, no. In the 30 years I’ve been watching them, they have almost always, to the match, played either up to, or down to, the opposition.

It’s what they do.
Except dos a cero is a thing for a reason. We don't win every match by 1 goal.

how's everyone's bracket doing? see a lot of zeros on our forum league ... did those people forget to lock in entries?

No Gio and a huge win. As long as we advance people will forget. If we lose to the Dutch and he doesn’t see minutes then we’ll see US Soccer media asking those questions.
I thought the substitutions didn’t make an impact aside from Zimmerman. He came up with some big clearances.
I’m fine with same lineup for Saturday but we have to capitalize on chances. Multiple times we had the ball around and in the 18 and misplayed passes or didn’t shoot. Need to be more aggressive.

I'm tied for fourth, which is fine considering I didn't go chalk, did 0 research to help decide when not to go chalk, and spent about 90 seconds making the picks. Plus I went USA 1, England 2 which was a total "I want" pick.
Point system is both odd and confusing. Confusing because I got 25 points for correct 3rd and 4th place picks which is not mentioned in the rules,
Group Stages
65 points for each correct group winner selection
40 points for each correct second place group selection
35 bonus points for each selection of team to qualify for knockout stage (regardless of correct order)

Odd in that I see no reason to give more points for picking first correctly than for getting position 2, or even 3 and 4 correct. I'm not arguing, and for all I know this system is better for my entry, but it just seems odd to me.

I’m one of the 0’s. Which is odd because I did a bracket and joined the league. Not sure how they accept my final score prediction and all but then I don’t get entered.
Could be that I missed a step but I don’t recall it being complicated.

With their final Group came imminent, and a must win situation, how do people feel about the somewhat ongoing debate about whether CONCACAF solidarity means we should root for Mexico in the WC as long as they aren't playing us? I don't hate them in neutral situations in the WC, but I can't find a reason to root for them either. Honestly, I have little rooting interest for or against except for the USA. If Poland wins I'm like, "that's nice" but I don't really care. Outside of right now, I've always liked the Dutch for their history in the game and cheerful fans. There's a couple of teams I don't like, though not for meaningful reasons. Mostly I just root for underdogs and end up disappointed.

Their games system has always been a bit wonky.

I am somehow first. did my bracket in about 2 minutes based on whatever knowledge I had at the time, emotional choices, and why not? choices.

scoring rules in full:

Scoring: Bracket Game Entry Period: Correct group winner pick = 65 pts Correct group second place pick = 40 pts Correct group third place pick = 25 pts Correct group fourth place pick = 25 pts Correct pick of team to qualify for knockout stage (regardless of correct order) = 35 points
