World Cup 2022

Makes me think about how this Forum would be if it promoted the worst (most inflammatory, most caustic) posters. That's the tweeter biz model. OTOH, here I can (and do) literally turn off the posters who aggravate me.

FWIW, I don't go on the Tweeter for this reason (among others).
My humble brag is I’ve never created a Twitter. And it seems right now isn’t the best time to get on there anyways

I was at a concert and wasn't able to watch these games. I saw 1-0 at halftime on both games and figured that was that... h-o-l-y-s-h-i-t

As someone that has not followed European national teams super closely can someone help me understand why Germany is so bad? Their roster looks stacked and on top of that 7 of their 11 starters, today play for Bayern, with Sule only a year removed from his time there. No other team is putting out a lineup with a roster of 8 players that have played with each other year-round at both the club and country. How is that level of familiarity not a massive advantage?

I’ve been avoiding Twitter for obvious reasons and following via Reddit. I made the mistake today of pointing out that Lukaku had missed 3x the sitters today that Wondo had missed in ‘14. What followed was a toxic shitstorm of extrapolation, denial, obvious and straight up counter factual takes from the so-called US fanbase, all of whom seem to have been born believing that we both should be superior to, and can’t possibly beat, every team outside of Concacaf. Basically because MLS or something. What a miserable lot.

Yeah. This group last game was the most entertaining IMO. Can't imagine either of today's groups will measure up given the runaway leader each has going into today.

First they fell out of Pot 1 somewhere along the way and that's why they had to play Spain.
They somewhat mostly outplayed Japan, except that Japan's keeper had a very strong game while Japan finished their chances against Neuer.
Then they drew against higher ranked Spain and destroyed Costa Rica but it wasn't enough.
In a 3-game season one unfortunate result is all it takes.

Pot 1 is so important the WC format is geared to getting those teams in the quarterfinals because it also plays a big part in the R16 matchup. Without hosting, I feel like USA is finally making their way into pot 1 territory. But now they are changing the rules to 3 team groups and penalty shootouts. So who knows what will be important going forward.

You write that so matter-of-factly.
Reports are they're *considering* penalties in 3 team groups. There are also substantial reports that they're thinking of nixing 3 team groups in favor of 4-team groups (with best of 3rd place finishers).

The tournament is 3 and a half years away, we don't know the format yet.

I thought there was a vote the other day.

This is correct. The initial reports a few years ago seemed to be certain there would be 3-team groups, but it's not decided yet.
I read a report this week that they were concerned that 3 team groups don't allow simultaneous games to conclude group stage which creates opportunity for silly business. Also, 3 team round robins probably means even more placements decided on tiebreakers. They have considered adding kick shootouts to the group stage to alleviate some of this. I think the shootout winner would get 1 extra point. But a lot of people hate that (I'm one of them). Shootouts are the least objectionable method to decide games that have to be decided, but they still suck. Group stage games should be left as a draw.
Anyway, for all of the above reasons, 4 team groups are more likely than previously thought, but still not certain.

Catching up on this.

Regarding Mexico, and its failure to advance for the first time in 44 years...

I saw this observation circulated. Tyler Adams, our captain and leading midfielder is 3 months younger than... the youngest player on Mexico's team.
If there is one thing GB doesn't get enough credit for, it is transitioning to this new generation of players. Sure, this generation is loaded with obvious talent, but bringing them all into the program and getting them matches together, when he had pressure to get results quickly to avenge Couva, was still a much more difficult task then many people understand.

Despite finishing third, WCQ was a huge success considering the youth, insane schedule congestion, and all the travel the players had to go through for likely the first time in their lives.

We were inconsistent, but we got built well for this tournament!

I’m watching the Uruguay match and thinking if they go through, it’s still only 3 CONMEBOL teams in the round of 16. I feel like it’s just way too few considering the talent in S. America. Europe will have 1 team from EVERY group, total 8. Concacaf 1, Asia 2 & Africa 1. Maybe it’s time to finish what the Copa America Centenial started. Combine South America, Central America, & North America into a single confederation. Cut out the Carribean and let the get half a team like Oceana. T&T /Jamaica can play 6th place of Africa or something for a WC bid. No more rinky dink banana republic stadiums to play in for qualifying. Get around 8-9 teams in from the new FFA (Federation Football of Americas). I think it would do well financially for all the nations (also cut out possible bribery of Caribbean nations who voted against USA for 2022 WC, really cut their legs out from a power & money perspective like they deserve. I’d love to see what their TV rights go for without USA, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, even Panama involved.)

These would be the world rankings of the new 19 member FFA:

1. Brazil
3. Argentina
13. Mexico
14. Uruguay
16. USA
17. Colombia
23. Peru
29. Chile

31. Costa Rica
41. Canada

44. Ecuador
47. Paraguay
57. Venezuela
60 . Panama
74. El Salvador
80. Honduras
82. Bolivia
142. Nicaragua
176. Belize

With 8 seeds I still see USA continuing to qualify for the WC (in an expanded WC probably 10 of 19 teams), but really getting tested along the way. I also see the TV rights with Brazil & Argentina stars on US televisions worth a bloody fortune! This really makes too much sense, but we know it will never happen.

Of course I jinx Uruguay with this post. Still feel my argument is even stronger if you had 8 groups and FFA teams couldn’t play each other. It would increase their chances of advancing.

Couldn’t watch the games, I see Korea and Uruguay tie on points and GD, did they go to Fair Play points?

tiebreakers in order are: GD, GF, Head to Head, Fair Play, Lottery.

South Korea advanced on GF.

edit:

so i looked it up again and Fifa's site actually has tie breakers in two steps.

• Step 1:
(a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
(b) superior goal difference in all group matches;
(c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
Step 2: If two or more teams in the same group are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
(d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
(e) superior goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
(f) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
(g) highest team conduct score relating to the number of yellow and red cards obtained;
(h) drawing of lots by FIFA.

in this case, korea advances based on step 1(c).
