World Cup 2022

I think we all said we'd be OK with bowing out at this stage as long as we were in the game. We weren't. This hurts because we clearly weren't even close to being at the level. So many chances, but we've been incapable of finishing this entire World Cup. And the defensive snafus have been just terrible. We were not at the level of Netherlands today.

tired legs beat us today and that's just the way it goes. our depth just wasn't good enough. advancing out of statistically the hardest group was a win.

should GB had played more players sooner? maybe. hard to really blame it on subs or player selection though i'm sure some pundits and fans will say gio should have started.

we got punished for mistakes today and we didn't punish dutch mistakes. that's soccer and we'll learn from this and maybe win the world cup on HOME SOIL :)

I'll say this: I'm proud of how hard our players played today. We weren't good enough, but the team played their asses off. It's not their fault they're not good enough. Hopefully at some point in our lives, just getting out of the group will become the bare minimum.

(i'm in the netherlands right now)
We weren't even close to the Dutch. Not even close. Our defense was atrocious, they just ran right through our players for most of the game. Nobody marking a player at the back post, finishing was terrible.

But, and I don't know why, the players out there today really didn't look like they were playing down 2 goals for most of the second half. Just sauntering about with the ball. That's my observation

I didn't expect to go through so I can't really be too angry... and it was cool seeing the Dutch fans happy and singing after the game ended here :)

Yeah. Lots of could would should options but 1. we lack depth and 2. we lack a reliable CF. Those are significant obstacles.

Maybe rotation in previous games helps today but also maybe it keeps us from advancing.
We (almost) played more Dutch than the Dutch today. We passed and developed and attacked from the beginning and they sat back and looked to counter, but they also had some gorgeous passing sequences. We've had dueling inconsistent complaints about the US style to date. Some wanted us to never stop attacking and others wanted us always to defend and pounce. Generally Berhalter had us attacking (especially in games where the opponent just handed us possession) and then became more defensive when the opponent switched their style and when we were up in the second half. It worked until the first time we got burned on a killer counter and as noted earlier, Tyler Adams made maybe his only real mistake of the tournament.

Now, FWIW, I'm completely OK if US Soccer decides not to renew Gregg. I've defended him consistently and am happy with his work and decisions but I'm also not a big fan of 2 cycle coaches. Sometimes it works, but I prefer new starts. Depends on who we hire instead of course. Also, some have suggested Berhalter might be ready to move on.

Don't know what to do about CF. We auditioned about a half dozen options and nobody asserted themselves. I don't know what else we can do. We've sent our guys all over the world to play against good competition, and kept a couple here at home, and none of them have made a case.

parks would have been a great option to advance the ball in midfield and join the attack as a mckennie rotation choice. sure parks isn't as mobile or athletic as mckennie but brings more ball retention. would have been nice.

the dutch were prepared for us to play high paced attacking and we were too tired to deal with the counters. that's all there is to it. they let us have the ball knowing we'd come at them like Ecuador did and they sat back, stayed compact and challenged us to break through them, which we could not do. our only real chances came on counter attacks or quick plays down the wings, which more often than not, resulted in poor crosses to a non-existent #9.

ferreira is not that guy. haji wright is definitely not that guy. sargeant gives us a lot as a #9 with hold up play , creating space, and defensive workrate, but he's not a goal scorer. i would have liked to see pefok get a try but it is what it is.

i think this was a good experience for a young squad. 2026 on home soil will be interesting and all these players will be more experienced and probably even better (hopefully). here's hoping between now and then a clear #9 makes an appearance and claims the spot as his own.

We bossed the midfield through the whole tournament. Got the ball forward and handled it very ineffectively. We couldn't put games away. We should have beaten Wales and probably England if we had any scoring ability, allowing us to rotate against Iran.

Today, we played very well, except for defensive mistakes and an inability to do anything in the final third that wasn't a fluke. Obviously, you can dominate as much possession as you want, mistakes and failure to score will cost you every time.

I'm happy overall. We are talented, young, and hopefully ready to dominate n home soil where we should perform betterin 2026!

I think Berhalter did a great job overall on numerous fronts, but I'm not a big fan of multiple cycles for a manager. Thank you for bringing us back, transitioning us to this generation, and good luck with your net gig!

Not taking Pefok for this roster was a HUGE mistake that bit GGG in the ass. We’ll never know what if, but we weren’t winning the WC if we’re honest so whatever.

We couldn’t produce in the final third, and GGG was stubborn to stick to his 433 and not even slide in a false 9 to start gio or Aaronson. This led to 2 goals in 4 matches (+OG v the Dutch). Didn’t look it up, but that’s probably the worst goals p/g of all the nations in the WC. There’s no excuse for that with the talent we had. There’s a good argument to be made that the talent we had on our roster (despite GGG leaving some important players off) took us farther than our coaching should have. Without his brother Jay as COO let’s hope this was GGG’s last dance. I’m looking forward to a new cycle with a new manager with creativity and flexibility, to lead our baby eagles into the future.

I’m not really upset that we went out in the 16. I’m a little disappointed that the failure to track open runners was so obvious to me as it developed (speaking as as a lifelong defender). When we have overachieved it has always been by shutting down superior firepower. We did that versus England. The breakdowns today were so obvious that they leave me with hope that going forward our issue will be less quality tha mentality. Which is a first-world soccer problem. It’s weird but oddly reassuring that all three goals we gave up today would (quality adjusted) never have happened to any Sunday league side I’ve ever played on. Hard for me to imagine this happening in four years.

BTW we still need a real striker and we will have to upgrade Ream/Zim etc to improve.

Well, hats off to the boys for getting this far. Clearly outplayed today from start to finish. I think a lot of us believe the team has more potential and I don’t disagree with that. Still, the whole tournament has been filled with mistakes. Poor passing, poor marking, poor finishing and so on. We have 4 years to figure it out. Idk if that includes Greg. I don’t think he loses his job. We likely don’t see Zimmerman and Ream Next cycle.
Looking forward to the next 4 years.

It's going to be harder and harder for the sports apparatus in America to continue to make believe Americans don't care about soccer. I'm worried about whether people will watch and be engaged when it's behind the Apple paywall, but the sport is pretty clearly blossoming in this country.

The foundation is there, need 2 CBs (maybe one if Richards is the guy), midfield depth (someone like keaton parks would have been veeeeeeery useful today), and, above all, a damn striker. Maybe Pepi takes the great leap.
