Which leads me to conclude that NYCFC might have already used it's buyout on a player who was already released and it was simply listed as option declined or some such. I expect this is done as a courtesy to the players who are bought out.

Trade anything for Saunders. How about an extra charter flight?

I saw Mix play good one time. It was with the USMNT and he looked like a young Pirlo for one half. Other than that he has been super frustrating. Guy runs around like a mad man and accomplishes nothing. Given the big enough sample size of unproductive play combined with his mostly shitty (and sometimes fake good) attitude toward the team, I never want to see him on the pitch again representing our Club.

If we can't unload him to another MLS club, we should ask Garber for permission to loan him to Chapecoense for free and get his cap hit off the books even as we pay his salary. This seems crazy enough to work as a one-time exception type thing. Everyone in the futbol world wants to help Chape, and this could be the MLS contribution.

I like this creative thinking.

I think we have found our answer.

He's had a year in the system, and his strong suit is possession. I truly think he will have a chance to win the starting spot, but I think that will only last until Johnson can get the possession facet of his game up to Vieira's liking.

I disagree with this. I think Johansen's ability was inflated around here by everyone who had enough of Saunders. We should continue to develop him, but I don't think Johansen is starting quality right now either, and I don't think possession is his strong suit except when compared to Saunders.

I do think Johnson is starting quality, and I do think he has a ton of upside to become a top keeper in the league. He's not perfect, as he's probably middle-of-the-road when it comes to the ball at his feet, but if he works on that and regains some confidence and command of a decent defense, look out.

I'm under the believe that when NYCFC players get a hair cut their talent or playing time picks up. This rule only applies for those individuals had hair when originally acquired (Josh Saunders).

- Khiry Shelton: Goes from raccoon to real haircut, a breakout season
- Eirik Johansen: From long hair to short hair and plays 270 minutes in the final games of the season

I've said that Vieira doesn't appreciate Mix's luscious locks. So maybe a haircut would do him good...

Also, looking at the transaction summaries, we let go 11 guys last offseason and brought in 9 and then added Chanot over the summer.

This year, we have let 9 go so far and added 2. I think this is more turnover than many might like, but given how well we did adding guys last year, I am confident we can get good people this season.

I also don't think our turnover is particularly high compared to the league overall.
With this in mind, let's compare. Here's our end of 2015 starting XI after dropped players and before acquisitions:

TMac - Villa - Shelton
Lampard - Pirlo - Mix
RJ - Hernandez - Brillant - Mena
Saunders

Bench - Mullins, Poku, Taylor, Ballouchy, Johansen

And 2016:

TMac - Villa - Shelton
Pirlo - Lopez - Harrison
Matarrita - Chanot - Brillant - RJ
Johansen

Bench - Saunders, Gomez, White, Mena, Mix?

Here's how I'd grade the years.

Front line - How do you judge? Given our lack of midfielders and uncertainty with Mix, I've moved Harrison out of the front line. Thus with Shelton slotted in at RW, we have the same front in both years. But if Harrison is in at RW, clear advantage to 2016.

Midfield - This is complicated to judge also. We know in retrospect that Lampard was fantastic when healthy but missed a huge amount of time and Mix, let's not go there. Obviously Lopez is the weak link to the 2016 midfield, but we also don't expect him to be our starter.

Defense - No contest. RJ back on the right where he belongs. Mata and Chanot replacing Mena and Hernandez. HUGE improvement.

GK - Nod goes to Eirik and 2016.

Bench - We had more offense last year and more defense this year. But I'd go with our 2015 talent. (Says the guy who has perhaps an unhealthy love for Poku.)

Signing Flexibility - In 2015 our 3 DPs were locked up. But we were also high on Mix. In 2016 we have the excitement of being able to sign a new DP, but we also have 750k in a player who might stay the whole year and play 0 minutes. Is that a wash?

Bottom line, I think comparing these two years at equivalent stage is interesting. Last year our big gains were Harrison, Mata and Chanot. At the moment all three seem to be returning (and don't anyone dare say otherwise). On the other hand we lost a bonafide goal scorer in Lamps. So if we assume 3 significant upgrades this year, same as last, GK is already done. Assume CDM and probably one other offensive player plus a bunch of cheap depth signings.

I think that shows a pretty strong year over year progression overall.

Atlanta is starting to really scare me. If anyone else is scared and wants to see them (hopefully) shit the bed in preseason, they are playing Seattle in the "Carolina Challenge Cup" on 2/18. It starts an hour before our game against Houston kicks off (at least I think. Our comp is listed at 6pm Mountain Standard Time).

Oh how I've missed those terrible internet streams.

We saw how hard it is to get a TEAM together, they will have just as much to worry about.

Yes, and it is still hard to put a team together entering year 3. I definitely have to give Atlanta props and much has to be said about having competent leadership from day one and not clinging to vestiges of MLS 1.0 and building a team around a bunch of squad players well beyond their mediocre prime. Year one set us back about 2 years :unamused:

They still have to fill out their roster, and I'm sure there will be a bunch of crap in there. Theyve got to be nearly out of intl; spots and cap money. That means lots of overpaid americans to fill out the entire defense (Larentowicz is 33) and all their backups.

Atlanta has no defense and likely will have no defense when the season starts. You can have Messi and ronaldo on your team and it will do you no good if they are stuck in their half and never get the ball.

They have Zach Loyd and Mikey Parkhurst. That's not a bad place to be starting from. I'm pretty sure at least one of those guys would at least spot start for us if not take one of the positions. Both are good with the ball and Parkhurst is a strong passer (don't know about Loyd).
